In a keenly contested game played under the lights at the Mennaye Field Penzance, Mounts Bay edged out visitors Redruth by 4 tries to 2.
The game, one of a series in the Cornwall Super Cup also involving Launceston, saw Bay field 12 first team regulars including Lee Jarvis at full-back and Ricky Pellow at fly-half. Richard Carroll relished playing against his former team mates, whilst for Redruth starts were given to centre Paul Thirlby and scrum-half Mark Richards.
The crowd in excess of 200 were entertained throughout on a breezy and cold Autumnal evening, not least by back row Josh Morgan's new shaven locks.
Redruth also gave a start to Newbury 2nds and Hampshire U-20 centre Phil Pearse, currently studying at the School of Mines, whilst Tim McBride continues to progress in his third game back after injury.
Reds Full-back Ed Carne takes up the story:
" Mounts Bay used the wind well in the first period with Jarvis and Ricky Pellow keeping Redruth pinned in their own 22 with some big touchfinders. Bay scored their tries through rolling mauls after lineouts, with our discipline letting us down at times, giving away too many penalties and allowing them to have the lineout near our own line."
"Redruth scored a try midway through the first half when Faleono Seve broke off the edge of a ruck and after the Bay backs had caught up with him captain Mark Richards was only a pass away and he had the pace to get over, Grant Thirlby adding the extras. Fale made a number of breaks through the game and his back row partner Steve Wood put in some big tackles and turnovers. Prop Simon Lutey was sin binned for collapsing a maul just before half time."
"In the second half Redruth allowed one try in as we tried to use the wind, ill discipline again kept us in our own 22. ex red Richard Caroll also caused us few problems around the breakdown as he does."
Our second try came from a well worked backs move where Timothy Mcbride broke through, was brought down just short of the line whilst trying to offload. We recycled the ball quickly and it went to the other side where Paul Thirlby ran into the corner."
Watching from the touchline were Bay loan player Marek Churcher and the injured James Mann.
This was Redruth's second defeat in the competition, and will look to improve when they visit Launceston in early December.
