Exeter Colts 3 Redruth Colts 3 - Jim Trinder reports
Redruth Colts progressed into the national stages of the Colts Cup with the win at Exeter on Sunday afternoon – this the competition in which the Reds managed to reach the final at Northampton last season.
It was a close encounter at Sandy park between the two top sides in Cornwall and Devon, the kind of old fashioned result as the two teams always show great respect for each others attacking capabilities.
The Reds may have felt this was not their day when they lost influential second row Ben Page with a shoulder injury after just 3 minutes on the clock.
The home side took the lead after a penalty for offside was conceded by the very tight Reds defence. Nevertheless the visitors were soon level when a handling offence in the ruck handed Brett Rule the opportunity to tie things up.
Exeter had flanker Ed Brown sin binned for repeated offences at the ruck shortly after but the Reds couldn't drive home the advantage.
Redruth kicked off the second half driving Exeter into desperate defence in the corner only to let them off the hook with a silly penalty.
But this set the pattern for the second half in which the Reds continued to drive Exeter back but without breaking through.
As the game wore on the Reds coaching team feared giving away a silly penalty might mar what had been an excellent away performance.
Although Exeter managed a few sorties into the Reds half with a lineout in the Reds 22 at the death, the best effort the Reds defence stood firm to take the resutlt as the away team and progress in the competition.

Falmouth U17s 7 Redruth U17s 41
The Colts followed up their victory in the under 19 Cornwall merit over Camborne with this impressive display of open running rugby at Falmouth on Saturday.
Fielding a number of under 16s in this merit table game, the Reds youngsters soon repaid the faith in the selection with the first of a hat trick of tries by no 8 James Chillman after 5 mins.
Chillman went on to score 2 more tries in the opening 15 minutes to give the Reds a good platform on which to display their skills. Just to show they were not out of contention Falmouth replied with a converted try after a speculative kick ahead in the 22nd minute.
After that 'wake up' the visitors scored the try of the match after a flowing move from one end of the pitch to the other put over ' powerhouse' winger James Williams under the posts giving an easy conversion for flyhalf Richard Keverne.
As the match progressed the Reds did not have it all their own way with Falmouth taking some useful lineout ball. But this young Redruth side responded with a further 3 tries in the second half through centre Sam Newman and two scores by Richard Keverne to round things off.

Colts National Cup
This Sunday the Under 19s take on Exeter Colts away at Sandy Park in the 3rd round of the National Colts Cup kick off 2pm, a repeat of last year tie which saw the Reds victorious on the day.
The young Reds are in fine form with no major injury worries and pick from a strong squad. Exeter too have had some impressive victories so far this season, and this promises to be the tie of the round.

Redruth continued their winning sequence that stretches back to the beginning of the season with this convincing performance against an under strength Truro Colts side, winning by 38-12.
The young Reds organisation and power up front proved to much for the game visitors to overcome, as the home team monopolised the possesion and ran in 6 tries to the visitors 2.

Redruth Colts 28 Wiveliscombe Colts 7
The Colts warmed up for their second round tie in the National Cup this weekend at Exmouth with a convincing win over a tenacious Wiveliscombe side.
The Reds started brightly with a try by wing Scott Murray after a solo run that saw him outpace the visitors defence. The conversion struck from wide left was added by Chevy Reed.
A second score was added by Jack Williams again converted by Reed. The young Reds continued to dominate possesion but also made lots of errors with some loose passing, knock ons etc.
Scoring resumed in the second period with a second try for Murray now playing at full back coming through the line to score the try of the match -this was again converted by the prolific Reed.
Again, as in the first period, the Reds found continuity difficult with many small errors hampering progress. Changes were made to the lineup by the coaches to give the squad game time - another score followed, this time by scrum half Ashley Hosking (now operating on the wing finishing off a fine solo effort and the converting his own try).
Wiveliscombe scored a consolation try and conversion to round off the scoring and were pressing for another score as referee Mr Beconsall called a halt to an entertaining afternoon.
Redruth Scorers Tries Scott Murray 2, Jack Williams, Ashley Hosking.
Conversions - Chevy Reed 3, Ashley Hosking.

The Colts first warm up game of the season saw a well-drilled and very competent Wellington College win by 26-5, with the home side's sole score a second half try from Ashley Hoskin.
Whilst the first half saw almost total territory and possession from the visitors, this was Redruth's first game of the season. Selecting a mix of 17s and 18s, and with a squad of 26 all used, Redruth found some shape and direction in the second period and deserved more than the scoreline suggested.
More from Jim Trinder to come.

The new season beckons. The Colts have already done 17 pre-season sessions, and the squad will be working hard to emulate last seasons successes.
Our targets are always to take part and win all three of the local competitions, whilst enjoying the excitement and different challenges of the National Colts Cup.
Again, we have a large squad but the demands of school and college rugby limits the availability of some of the players. Nevertheless, the coaches are reporting a positive response in training and we look forward to another successful season and again we will see some of the future stars of the first team.
Above, a squad photo of the Colts taken on Monday, August 13th
We have had a couple of changes to the coaching team for this season. We said goodbye to Ralph Tregonning, who has coached the colts forwards for the last 15years and who is taking a well deserved rest this season. ( But I am sure Redruth Colts haven't seen the last of Ralph....)
A welcome back however to Nathan Pryor, part of a great coaching dynasty who has join the set up that his father had so much success with for many years.
Next weekend, the climax of the Colts pre-season takes place: the pre-season Training camp ! Our thanks to Roger and Sarah Pryor for the use of their land.
The highpoint of next weekend Rugby wise will be the Colts first game. On Sunday 26th Wellington College from Berkshire are our visitors, a top rugby playing school, play us as part of their pre-season tour.
On Friday and Saturday 31st August / 1st Sept the Colts are taking part in the Truro College Festival of rugby, a warm up for the season ahead. Also on the Saturday a home fixture with Exeter kick off 2.30pm.
