Lions don't roar and Pre-season Friendlies

I
Things are beginning to shape up for the new season and pre season begins on the 22nd June with gym sessions. We are in the process of organising pre season games and are hoping to play Plymouth Albion at home on August 9th and away a week later with Development fixtures against Penryn and possibly St Ives. We thought about going to Bath again but cost implications prevent that happening I'm afraid ...

The Lions made a pretty poor start to their tour of South Africa on Saturday ... but it's down to the fact they have only been together for 2 weeks .... I watched the Baa Baa's play England on Saturday, on TV I hasten to add, and they had been together for 3 days and they were brilliant! It seems that they trained together at Richmond for 1 session and then in Hyde Park for the other ..... it's still so refreshing to see class players come together so quickly and produce such scintillating stuff .... Rocky Elsom is a legend, and Schalk Brits is not far behind .... Saracens will certainly benefit with him in their side!

Back to the Lions, and I will be honest I thought they had lost the game when they went 25-13 behind, and to be fair, they did do well to pull it out of the fire .... a good base to start from as there is only one way to go ... up! Poor Keith Earls had a mare but I am sure he will find his feet in due course .....
Phil Vickery said "We are disappointed with the performance," "But we could have easily lost that game. The guys showed a lot of guts and courage to stick in there. "I think it is a good kick up the backside, which you need. The reality of what faces us on this tour is staring at us. "The most important thing about the last two weeks is the guys have got together, we've met each other and it is a great group of people and coaches. "Ultimately, that side of it is all finished now. It's about rugby, and that is why we are here."

Next up is the Golden Lions who seem to be in all sorts of trouble at the moment with players rumored to be leaving and the coach already gone ....

So the British and Irish Lions team to face the Golden Lions on Wednesday night is as follows ....

British & Irish Lions Team versus Golden Lions on Wednesday 3rd June, kick off, I think, is 18:10hrs

15. Rob Kearney (Leinster/Ireland) 14. Tommy Bowe (Ospreys/Ireland) 13. Brian O'Driscoll (Leinster/Ireland) 12. Jamie Roberts (Cardiff Blues/Wales) 11. Ugo Monye (Harlequins/England) 10. Stephen Jones (Scarlets/Wales) 9. Mike Phillips (Ospreys/Wales) 8. Jamie Heaslip (Leinster/Ireland) 7. David Wallace (Munster/Ireland) 6. Tom Croft (Leicester Tigers/England) 5. Alun-Wyn Jones (Ospreys/Wales) 4. Nathan Hines (Perpignan/Scotland) 3. Phil Vickery (London Wasps/England) 2. Lee Mears (Bath/England) 1. Gethin Jenkins (Cardiff Blues/Wales)
Replacements:
16. Ross Ford (Edinburgh/Scotland) 17. Euan Murray (Northampton Saints/Scotland) 18. Stephen Ferris (Ulster/Ireland) 19. Andy Powell (Cardiff Blues/Wales) 20. Harry Ellis (Leicester Tigers/England) 21. James Hook (Ospreys/Wales) 22. Shane Williams (Ospreys/Wales)

3 players start their 2nd consecutive game and a good pointer as to the way the selectors are thinking is Tom Croft playing at 6. Brian O'Driscoll captains the team and Phil Vickery starts after coming off the bench on Saturday. Looking at it now I can only see Lee Byrne breaking into this team .... he was outstanding on Saturday and the only one who actually enhanced his reputation ....

South Africa have unveiled a strong looking 28-man squad to tackle the British & Irish Lions as they hope to finally banish the ghost of 1997. Head Coach Peter de Villiers has opted for no recognised full-back in his selection though, which adds weight to claims that Frans Steyn could be shifted to the number fifteen jersey.

However, there were a couple of surprises in Monday's glamorous announcement and the inclusion of Earl Rose and Chiliboy Ralepelle is sure to leave Bulls players Zane Kirchner and Derick Kuün wondering what they did wrong. Elsewhere, Sharks prop Deon Carstens and Bulls centre Wynand Olivier return to Springbok duty after last playing back in 2007.

De Villiers' pick includes ten players from the Super 14 champion Bulls and ten from the Sharks, with the squad now set to prepare for the three-Test series that kicks-off in Durban on June 20.

The squad is:-

Backs: Jean de Villiers, Fourie du Preez, Jaque Fourie, Bryan Habana, Adrian Jacobs, Ricky Januarie, Odwa Ndungane, Jongi Nokwe, Wynand Olivier, Ruan Pienaar, JP Pietersen, Earl Rose, Frans Steyn, Morné Steyn.

Forwards: John Smit (capt), Victor Matfield (capt), Andries Bekker, Bakkies Botha, Schalk Burger, Deon Carstens, Bismarck du Plessis, Ryan Kankowski, Tendai Mtawarira, Chiliboy Ralepelle, Danie Rossouw, Juan Smith, Pierre Spies, Gurthrö Steenkamp.

What a great name .... Chiliboy Ralepelle !!!!

Our own Peter Joyce and Owen Hambly are now on tour with England Counties in Japan and Korea ... what an experience that will be for them.... seems that as I write this the tour party have been sent to bed with sleeping pills to help them get over their jet lag ..... if I can get some tour info over the next couple of weeks I will post it here ....

This time of year, in some respects, is pretty nice not just for the weather but having a bit of a break from the rigors of league rugby. I tend to watch cricket a lot during the summer months and get great enjoyment watching Redruth ... the pitch up at Trewirgie is one of the best there is and on a sunny day there is nothing better .... a few of the rugby boys find their way up there now and then and the social side after a game is really good. I also like to visit other grounds and you would be surprised who you meet up with .... rugby obviously comes onto the agenda and I spend many hours talking over the past season and giving my thoughts on the new .... really good!

On Saturday I did an interview on Radio St Austell Bay .... the guy who interviewed me was superb! I'll be honest I had never heard of the station but its there and they feature regular sports items on a Saturday ... indeed they will be covering the majority of our matches during the coming season. I actually did the interview behind a car up at Troon Cricket Club !! .....

The Ashes get ever nearer and the Aussies have arrived ..... will Flintoff be fit is the big question??? I reckon England will do ok and I forecast a 2-1 series victory ...... to England!! ... have to remain patriotic don't we!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Mark Bright is now back in New Zealand and starting his preparation for the forthcoming season with The Mako's. The games are live on Sky and I am sure The Mako's will feature in one of the televised games. Angela remains in this country for now until the school term finishes. Things are looking very good for Mark being with us again next season ... you can all help with this, please give me a ring to find out further details .....

Well that is about it for this week.... back next week ...

Cheers for now

Edinburgh, PJ and Super 14s

Well what a nice weekend that was ..... Edinburgh is a beautiful city but huge!! ..... at the time I did not think the game was that great but after watching it on television it was not at all that bad .... maybe it was the cold and the rubbish organisation at Murrayfield that allowed us 1 pint during the 3 hours we were in the ground! However, that said, we did find a good place to have a pint or two and a few were consumed over a very enjoyable weekend ....

As you all know PJ Gidlow will not be with us next season. PJ has accepted an offer to join Championship side Birmingham and Solihull Bees. He will be a huge loss to the club and a massive gain for the Bees. During the past 4 seasons I cannot speak highly enough of his contribution both on and off the field. The impression that he has left will stay with the club forever. PJ has always wanted to play rugby at the highest level he possibly could, obviously he would of loved to have done that with Redruth, but as the seasons go by so do the opportunities hence his decision. I'm not going to avoid the fact that the club's decision, and what it had to do on contracts for next season, had a baring on his decision, but we all have to accept the decisions from both sides .... PJ will be welcome back at the club at any time. He has also been a great captain and the way that he has handled himself and team has not gone unnoticed by officials both on and off the field. From us all mate, we sincerely wish you all the very best and we will all follow your progress with great interest ....

Also leaving is Mike Georgiou who is returning to Wales with his partner, we all wish Mike the very best, Rob Thirlby has joined Moseley and, again, we wish Rob all the very best. Rob had a great season and certainly showed what a class player he is. He is now only a few miles from his base and he must be very glad to see the back of the horrendous journey he had to endure. Finally, as we all know, Luke Collins is joining the Pirates ... we wish them all the very best of luck.

Those of you who were at the AGM will of heard that we have signed both Adryan Winnan and Sam Heard for next season. Added to this  Chris Morris (Cornish All Blacks), Jamie Semmens (Cornish All Blacks/Mounts Bay), Sam Parsons (Mounts Bay) will also arrive at the club. I am very close to signing 2 other players and these will be announced accordingly . The AGM was well attended and I hope people took on board what I was trying to say and what we needed to do as a club to move forward. The decisions we have had to make have been very tough ...

I received this email from a "great" reds supporter over the weekend and I feel it should be published. Receiving this sort of thing makes me very proud of what we have at Redruth ..... this was sent by Paul Smith (Smithy to his mates) and refers to his daughter Abigail who, if you recall, is our current "Supporter of the Year) ..... and to Richard Carroll ... this is what he wrote  ....

"If people ever wonder why Redruth is known as a great community club then I think that I may have a reason.

"We made the trip to Cinderford on Saturday to watch Redruth, (disguised as Cornwall) play in the Bill Beaumont Cup and it was there that Abs learned of PJ leaving, seeing the Redruth players lifted her spirits as did the all too familiar cuddle from Newqs. What happened after the game has left me lost for words".

"Abigail waited in her usual position, (always the place where the players enter and leave the pitch) when she was spotted by the one and only Newqs who proceeded towards her, another cuddle was administered along with the words "Thanks for coming" but the icing on the cake was the fact that he gave her his match shirt, (I believe that there are photos on the CRFU & Trelawneys Army web sites). This now hangs on the back of her bedroom door, (Washed of course). Despite all of the bad press that he gets there is a side to him which few people ever see."

Its no wonder that the young ones like the old b****er and no doubt a key reason for hooking Abs into the reds, probably for life.....

Beat that!!

The Super 14 will be a Super 15 from 2011, with a new-look three conference calendar stretching the Super Rugby season to 24 weeks.

There will be three five-team conferences, one based in each of the SANZAR countries with Australia by far the most likely country to benefit. The new 24-week Super Rugby competition guarantees each team a minimum of eight home matches and a 16-match regular season. A new six team finals series includes an extra round with two "sudden-death" qualifiers before the semi-finals. All teams will have a three-week bye while the tournament is suspended during the June International Test window, while the Tri-Nations series has also been given a new time slot in the calendar to run at the conclusion of Super Rugby

Key features of the proposed new season structure are:

·  A 15th team playing in the Australian conference will be added to Super Rugby following a tender process open to all territories, and with SANZAR making the decision on the new side's location. A timetable for tenders will be released shortly to ensure adequate lead-in time is provided to the successful bidder.

·  The Tournament will kick off in the last week of February and conclude in the first week of August, except in 2011 when the calendar will be shifted earlier to accommodate Rugby World Cup.

·  Teams will be divided into three national Conferences of five teams each. The new team will compete in the Australian Conference.

·  Teams play the other four teams in their Conference twice (home and away).

·  Teams play four out of the five teams from the other two Conferences (four home, four away).

·  All teams will have a three-week bye during the June Test window.

·  The three Conference winners and three wildcard teams with the highest number of competition points from any Conference qualify for the play-offs.

·  The wildcard teams and the Conference winner with the least competition points will play an elimination round to meet the two Conference winners with the greatest number of competition points in the semi-finals.

·  Tri-Nations will always kick-off in South Africa in mid-August and conclude with two of the three trans-Tasman matches in early October to allow for early release of Springboks to Currie Cup. The will allow for Tri Nations tests between particular teams in particular countries to become permanent fixtures on the rugby calendar.

England Team Manager Martin Johnson has recalled Brive hooker Steve Thompson while pushing fly-half Danny Cipriani down to Saxons level for summer action. Cipriani has been overtaken in the pecking order by Leicester's in-form pivot Sam Vesty, who is among six uncapped players named in the squad. Newcastle prop David Wilson and Tom May, who has been playing at fly-half, are both included along with Harlequins' Chris Robshaw and Jordan Turner-Hall plus Gloucester prop Nick Wood.

England play the Barbarians at Twickenham on May 30 before tackling the Pumas home and away, at Old Trafford on June 6 and in Salta a week later.

Thompson, 30, won the last of his 47 England caps off the bench in March 2006 before spending the best part of a year in retirement after suffering a neck injury. He took a coaching role with Brive but in 2007 he sought further medical advice, in both France and the United States, and was given the all-clear to pull on his boots again.

England's 34-man squad will be captained by Steve Borthwick and also includes recalls for Lewis Moody after an injury-plagued season and Ben Kay, who won his last cap on the 2008 summer tour to New Zealand.

England are providing eight players to the Lions while Johnson was unable to consider Paul Sackey, Mike Tindall, Jonny Wilkinson, Toby Flood and Tom Palmer due to injury.

So we now move into "Lions Territory" and the next few weeks will be dominated by the tour to South Africa ..... to start  some good news for the British and Irish Lions ... In-form Sharks scrum-half Rory Kockott has been left out of the Springbok training squad that will face a Namibian Invitation XV in Windhoek on May 29, effectively ending his chances of facing the British and Irish Lions.

Following Ian McGeechan's decision to leave his squad at 36 following the withdrawl, he has now had to backtrack on that following an injury to Leigh Halfpenny. Halfpint ... sorry Halfpenny has a bruised thigh and will require 12 days intense treatment prior to him joining the tour. Another blow to hit the touring party is the withdrawl of Jerry Flannery the Irish hooker. He has joined the growing list of Irish causalities after being ruled out with a broken arm. In the latest injury blow to the Lions management, the combative Munster hooker suffered a chipped bone in his left elbow during training on Wednesday. A scan revealed Flannery requires surgery that will prevent him from departing for South Africa with the rest of the squad on Sunday. He joins Ireland team-mates Tomas O'Leary and Alan Quinlan on the list of withdrawals.

One good thing that has happened though, Tom Croft will now make the trip as replacement for the suspended Alan Quinlan. Croft who was originally omitted will certainly add to the lock and back row strength and provide the team with many different options. Also joining the party are Ross Ford, replacing the unlucky Flannery and James Hook making up the squad as cover for Leigh Halfpenny.

Stumbled across the Trelawney's Army site earlier today, the first time I have looked at that for a while ..... I was not to be disappointed as "The Ginger Jedi" is still posting ..... and still writing rubbish! His post, which I hasten to add has not attracted one response, was advice for our trip to Cambridge .... amusing John I will say .... but not worth the effort mate!

The Rick Stein dinner is now advertised on the site and bookings etc can be made with Alan Nettle .... it will be a good un!

That's it for this week ..... back next week....oh I forgot...

Prediction:- Royal XV 13  British Lions 56 .....

Cheers for now

Redruth sign five

REDRUTH RUGBY ANNOUNCES FIVE SIGNINGS FOR NEXT SEASON

  • Full back Adryan Winnan from Cornish Pirates
  • Prop Sam Heard from Cornish Pirates
  • Winger Sam Parsons from Mounts Bay
  • Winger Chris Morris from Cornish All Blacks
  • Centre Jamie Semmens from Cornish All Blacks

Other signings are imminent and the majority of last season’s squad again look set to wear the Reds shirt next season in the new look 16 team National One.

Scrum half Mark Richards, who has had an outstanding campaign for Cornwall this month, will remain as will Cornwall colossus prop Darren Jacques, who made his debut for the Barbarians last season.

Darren was an ever present for Redruth last season and now holds the all-time Club record for consecutive first team appearances.

Darren misses the England Counties tour to Korea and Japan in July for personal reasons but it has been confirmed that two Redruth players, prop Peter Joyce and hooker Owen Hambly have been selected.

Redruth’s first game of the new campaign will be at home to Cambridge on Saturday 5th September kick off 3pm.

As one door opens, so another closes.

We say farewell to Rob Thirlby, top try scorer for Redruth last season with 18 tries.

Rob is joining Guinness Championship Moseley.

It’s au revoir to lock Luke Collins, voted the Supporters Player of last season. Luke joins the Cornish Pirates with our best wishes.

It’s now also confirmed that influential skipper Samoan centre PJ Gidlow has left Redruth to play for newly promoted Guinness Championship club Birmingham and Solihull.

Wing Mike Georgiou has left to play in Cardiff.

Everyone at Redruth wishes all four well.

Cornwall, Heineken and AGM !

Starting this week with the Cornwall v Somerset game that was played at the Rec on Saturday. It felt like it was mid November rather than mid May!! .... heavy showers, gale force winds and puddles on the pitch!! However it did not deter a rampant Cornwall team from "steam rollering" their opponents. It was a good game of rugby and the team. based on the backbone of the Redruth side, played with great endeavour and team spirit. There were good performances from Hanno Dirksen and Adryan Winnan and all of our players did well. Next weekend Cornwall play Gloucestershire at Cinderford and this match will determine who goes onto Twickenham to contest the Bill Beaumont Cup ... it will be tough as Gloucestershire easily disposed of the Devon challenge this past weekend .....

Went to the Cornwall Business Awards Dinner last Thursday and what a good do that was. It was held at St Mellion Golf and Country Club and what a place that is! Daphne Skinnard (Radio Cornwall) was there as was Gerald Ratner ... remember him? He gave a very witty speech about the collapse of his jewellery empire and his continued attempts to rebuild a career that was destroyed by his infamous speech back in 1991 when he described some of his products, that were on sale in his shops, as "crap". Anyway it worked out well for Somar ... we had 3 nominations, we won one category for "Best Diversification" and received Runners Up Awards in the categories for "Customer Focus" and "Best Technology" .....

My trip to Edinburgh is getting closer and I fly out of Newquay on Friday lunchtime. The rest of the guys leave Redruth at around 3:30am to catch their flight from Exeter!! No doubt there will be some who are using the Newquay facility so if its you .... I will see you there!! The only reason I have decided to do it this way is because the AGM is on Thursday and I know my ability to sleep after that will be limited to say the least! In days gone by it would not of bothered me but now that I am older my resilience is far lees than in previous years! I am sure the rest will have a Guinness or 2 for brekki followed by a further few before I get there which will be mid afternoon ...... och I the noo!!

Just as a point of interest here are some Heineken Cup statistics ... don't you just love an "anorak"!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

There are 232 players from the 13 match day 22-man squads who own Heineken Cup final winners' medals - 42 have two medals and Cedric Heymans is out on his own with three (with Brive in 1997 and Toulouse in 2003 and 2005).
Leinster are the 14th team to contest a Heineken Cup final – in the 14th season of the tournament. The other Heineken Cup finalists are Toulouse (5), Leicester Tigers and Munster (4), London Wasps, Stade Francais Paris, Brive (2), Cardiff RFC, Bath Rugby, Ulster Rugby, Colomiers, Northampton Saints, Perpignan, Biarritz Olympique (1 each).

The all-Ireland semi-final between Munster and Leinster at Croke Park earlier this month was watched by a world record crowd for a club rugby match of 82,208.

Leicester Tigers have now matched Toulouse in qualifying for five tournament finals and also have the opportunity of joining Toulouse as triple title winners.

Current Leicester Tigers’ players Marin Corry, Ben Kay, Lewis Moody and Geordan Murphy have all appeared in three previous finals (2001, 2002 and 2007) and could now join the elite eight players to have appeared in four finals. The eight are Ronan O’Gara, John Hayes, David Wallace (Munster) and Yannick Jauzion, William Servat, Jean-Baptiste Poux, Fabien Pelous and Jean Bouilhou (Toulouse).
The most points scored by an individual in a final is the 30 kicked by Stade Francais Paris’ Diego Dominguez (nine penalty goals and a drop goal) in the 2001 defeat by Leicester.

Two of the 13 finals have failed to produce a try – when Ulster Rugby beat Colomiers 21-6 in 1999 and when Toulouse needed extra time in the 2005 final to beat Stade Francais Paris 18-12.

This 14th final will be the 977th tournament match. Match No 1,000 will be the penultimate Pool match in Round 2 of next season’s tournament.
Chris White is the only referee to take charge of three finals – in 2003, 2005 and 2006.

Austin Healey is the only player who has won two Heineken Cup final man-of-the-match awards, in the Tigers’ back-to-back triumphs in 2001 and 2002.
There have been three single nation finals, the strictly French affairs in 2003 (Toulouse v Perpignan) and 2005 (Toulouse v Stade Francais Paris) and the battle of England in 2007 between London Wasps and Leicester Tigers.

To finish off the Heineken Cup section, it has just been announced that next years final will be held in Paris!!!!!!!!!!!

Other news in the rugby world that may be of interest .....Is it
farewell to Jonny Wilkinson? If reports emanating from France are to be believed, England's golden boy will soon be plying his trade with Toulon. Should he go - and it looks like it hinges simply on whether he can make it on to the airplane without doing himself an injury - he will be one of a growing number of England players who have decided to spread their wings.

The British media, accustomed as it has become to splashing negativity to all corners of the land, has painted the exodus as some sort of withering red rose apocalypse. The RFU has not helped matters by issuing a decree that warns that a move across the Channel might leave players high and dry with regards Test recognition. In short, deserters will be shot. But will it really be that bad? Do we have to resort to protectionism and threats? Sure, the clubs of the Top 14 will be reluctant to part with their players when national duty calls, particularly in the run-up to the annual grudge match between France and England. But Brive released Andy Goode when that curve-ball was thrown their way during the Six Nations, and Perpignan's Nathan Hines appears to have got his way in the row over the clash between the Lions' and his club's fixtures.

London Wasps have confirmed that Ian McGeechan has stepped down as the club's Director of Rugby. There has been widespread speculation in the English media all week that the club and the iconic coach were getting ready to part ways, with Waikato Coach Tom Hanks said to be in line to replace the B&I Lions Head Coach. After four seasons and a collection of silverware which include a Powergen Cup, Heineken Cup and Guinness Premiership title, McGeechan leaves behind an impressive legacy with the men in black and gold, adding to an already glittering CV. Famed for his lengthy association with the British and Irish Lions, the former Scotland fly half leaves his role, backing the club's commitment to ongoing planning, development and stability. Rumours are rife at present that he will take up a role at London Scottish next season but if you read and believe other sources of information it is likely he will fulfill an advisory position at London Wasps .... my money is on a role at London Scottish! ... be nice to see such a legend in the game at Redruth next season ......

The British and Irish Lions still have to fill 2 vacancies for their tour of South Africa .... the suspension of Alan Quinlan, although he is to lodge an appeal, and the injury to Tom Shanklin, has opened the door for 2 players ... my money is on Tom Croft for the Quinlan vacancy and Delon Armitage for the Shanklin berth .... although I would not to rule out Cipriani even though he seems likely to miss out on the England tour to Argentina and play for the Saxons in the Churchill Cup.

Andy Lay, who works on our sponsorship committee is co-ordinating a project for children in Kisumu Kenya. There are many orphans in this part of the world and many are HIV positive or have contracted HIV from deceased parents. What Andy is asking for is any old rugby boots etc that can be sent to this part of the world. There is no deadline on this project. There is a collection point in the club so any old gear that anyone has would be most appreciated. The club has had links with Kenya in the past through rugby when Ben Ayimba and Oscar Osula played for us a few seasons ago. Both are now associated with the Kenyan 7 a-side team.

Don't forget the AGM on Thursday...I am hoping to announce signings and departures plus a review of the season ...... it will be good if we have a full house as everyone needs to know the road we are taking, understand what we have to do and find out what they can do to help .....

The Rick Stein dinner is now being advertised on the site and at many other places ... get your tickets early!! We have 2 great guest speakers in Geoff Miller (current Chairman of England cricket selectors) and Rodney Hogg (former Australian Test bowler). This is very apt as the date of the dinner is pretty much on the eve of the forthcoming Ashes series ......

That's it for this week, good luck to the Cornish team next weekend in their bid to get to Twickenham and Edinburgh here I come!

Cheers for now

New Community brochure
