Newbury v Redruth Match Report
Report by Ed Bawden
Redruth gave a fully committed performance in a vital relegation battle but failed to take their chances and two penalty goals from the half way line by Newbury fly half Mitch Burton just gave his side the edge.
Heavy rain just before kick off made conditions difficult but it was clear why both sides were in the middle of the league table with a number of turnovers.
Making their first ever visit to Monks Lane, Redruth had plenty of travelling support and playing with a strong wind in the first half they failed to cash in on three good chances of tries, and were held to a 10-7 lead at the break.
A Mark Bright try midway through the second half converted by Adryan Winnan put Redruth 17-10 ahead, but Newbury hit back with 13 points in 10 minutes to grab a winning position.
Winnan missed with a long range penalty in the opening minute, but put the Reds ahead with a kick from 25 metres a few minutes later.
Chris Fuca made a good fist of moving up into the second row and Lewis Vinnicombe was inches away from a try with a chip and chase when he had support inside, while the Reds squandered a 3-on-1 overlap going towards the left hand corner in another good chance
From a turnover in the Newbury 22, Herbie Stupple ran strongly for the Reds first try after 26 minutes that Winnan converted. Newbury then hit back on the stroke of half time with flanker Jack Bentall going through a lapse in defence for a soft try that Burton converted.
The rain stopped and the sun was out as the second half got under way, Burton kicked a penalty from half way after 51 minutes to level the scores.
When Newbury lock Dan Hodge was sent to the sin bin for repeated offences, Redruth took advantage when Bright powered his way over for a try following a series of 5 metre scrums to put the Reds in front going into the last quarter.
Burton used the wind well to pin the Reds back and he kicked a simple penalty after 62 minutes.
Following a heeled scrum winger Karl Buttle slipped through the Reds defence to put the hosts ahead for the first time with less than 15 minutes to go. Burton added the extras and a few minutes later put over another massive penalty from the half way line wide out on the right.
With 4 minutes to go Ed Jackson, on loan from Bath, touched down a try after a series of pick and drive moves on the Reds line.
Just before the final whistle after a thrilling run by Nick Simmons, Owen Hambly picked up a loose ball to crash over for a try wide out on the left. Paul Thirlby hit the upright with a conversion as Redruth had just a losing bonus point to take back to the Recreation Ground when really it could have been all 5.
