TESCO's EVERY LITTLE HELPS

Mini/Juniors - Tesco Sport for Schools vouchers

We will be collecting the Tesco Sport for Schools vouchers again when the new promotion starts next week.

The vouchers can be deposited in the Tesco collection box in the main clubhouse or alternatively you can give them to your team coach or myself.

Last year we were able to get some rugby balls for each team and a fitness training set.

Thank you in advance for your help with this

First XV attend Sunday morning Mini Juniors training

There was a super turnout of First team players, Minis, Juniors and Parents and Coaches on Sunday morning, September 16th. Two or three players took each age group through some moves and exercises before playing a short game. Many thanks to an under-the-weather Head Coach Nigel Hambly for organising the players' attendance. Some photos of the day appear in the Gallery section.

Coaching Help Needed

COACHING HELP REQUIRED FOR 7's & 8's. With the new Mini / Junior season starting on Sunday Sept.2nd I now find myself in charge of the Redruth Destroyers and Warriors. As we get going there could be as many as 25 children turning up on a Sunday morning to start or continue with their rugby careers. If there are any ex-players or anyone with good rugby experience who would be interested in helping me out on a Sunday morning (hangovers acceptable!), i'm looking for 2 willing volunteers. We have a full fixture list for the coming season, including some half time games and the great trip to Bath RFC at the end. (For anyone wanting to know when their child can start playing, it's basically 6 years old and upwards) I am also looking for any willing sponsors for the season, any money raised or donated will go towards kit for the kids, rain jackets, shirts, new balls, etc So if you are interested in any of the above please contact me soon at ckjsidwell@aol.com or call me on 01209-219091 or 07870525863. See you all soon, Chris Sidwell.

Under 7's at Bath

On a beautiful sunny Sunday morning the Redruth U7 Destroyers took part in theirs (and my) first ever Bath Rugby Festival. What a rollercoaster of emotions it turned out to be. In our group we were drawn against Corsham, Winchester and Bath 'A'.

First up were Corsham, we started off at a cracking pace and were soon 2 tries to nil in the lead but Corsham soon came back to level the scores. With all the boys playing their part in defence and attack the game ended in a draw at 6 all.

We only had a couple of minutes break and we were on again, this time against Bath 'A'. This was a really competative game form the start, both teams running strongly. The game was scoreless until Jordan made a good break only to be tagged two metres short of the line, but a good pass saw the ever present Liam score in the right hand corner. Bath then equalised, one all at the break. With the second half under way and some good runs from Piran, Ollie and William it was Jordan who finished with a try in the corner. Bath then threw everything at us and for a while our defence held firm with Jack and Jacca making a series of good tags but as we tired from our second game on the trot it was Bath who scored the final try to make it 2 - 2 at the final whistle. Going in to our final pool match against Winchester we knew we had to win to progress into the semi final. After a great team effort we just lost by 5 tries to 4, hence ending any thoughts of glory.

After the initial dissapointment and the look of sadness on all of the boys faces we can reflect on a great team effort throughout the day, and a draw against a Bath team who went through to the final (thanks to my refereeing of the semi final !!! ) It's easy to forget that most of these boys are only seven years old with the exception of William and Jordan who are only six and will have another year at under sevens.

Finally, a big thank you to all the parents who made the trip up to Bath, without your help it wouldn't be possible. Please remember that on Sunday 13th there will be mini / junior presentations made to all the boys who have played for the under 7's.

See you all there, thanks, Chris.

A thanks from Dorchester U12's

This is rather a belated note to thank Nigel and the rest of the Redruth Coaches and helpers for the Under 12s for making us feel so welcome the other Saturday, it really helped get our tour off to such a great start. We really liked your report on your website and I would like reassure the writer that Martyn Peel got his come uppance in a big way on the Sunday in front of 3000 people at The Cornish Pirates game! He will also continue to have the micky taken as long as he thinks he has golden boots when it comes to kicking!

The boys really enjoyed their time at Redruth and we all hope that we can play you again in the future possibly by welcoming you all at Dorchester. I can promise a really warm welcome if you are heading this way.

Hope you all enjoy the summer break after the toils of the rugby season

Regards

Andrew Smith Team Manager Dorchester RFC Under 12s

Redruth Under 12's at Bath

Redruth completed their final season in the mini's on Sunday, competiting in the Bath Festival for the last time. With a 5.30am start and four hour bus trip for ten of the team, we were not expecting too much success, given the standard of opposition we meet at this festival. But the boys had other ideas and probably gave their best displays of the season to reach the semi-finals, winning all of their group matches along they way.

The first game was against Bath, the Reds pack dominated from the outset and tries were scored in each half for a comfortable 10 -0 win. With only a two minute break the Reds were back on against Avon, once again the Reds dominated play and a second half try gave us a 5 -0 win. After a well earned rest, the boys were up against a huge Corsham side to decide the winners of the group. Corsham got the better start and scored first through their monster prop. The Reds slowly regrouped and equalised on half time, then proceeded to dominate the second half scoring two more tries to win 15-5.

Hopes were high for a semi-final win, but we ran into a very "streetwise"!!! Havant team, who after only a couple of minutes had scored a try and had removed two of our most influential players from the pitch. The pack began to tire in the heat and we picked up more injuries along the way, eventually losing 15-0.

Tries on the day scored by Oliver Bryant (3),Kieran Trewin and Jake Rayment.

The whole team should be very proud of their achievements on the day. Along with the rest of the squad the boys have all come on in leaps and bounds, and we are anticipating a great first season in the junior ranks.

The squad who have given great service over this season are: Daniel Eathorne,Scott Gregor,Daniel Vincent,Kieran Trewin,Dirk Moodie,Steve Trenoweth,Oliver Bryant,Ryan Thomas,Liam Andrew,Jake Rayment, Alex Burke,Luke Weight-Cox,Adam Hanbidge,Ben Hocking,Adam Harris,Kieran Young,George Currie,Boran Dickson,Chris Beasley,Harry Langley,Connor Prisk

Just to remind all the squad that Presentation Day is on Sunday 13th May at 12 midday, (please wear shirts and ties).

We are also looking for new sponsorship for next season for shirts and kit, if anyone is interested, please let me know.

And finally a few thanks:- A big thanks to our great supporters - parents, grandparents, brothers and sisters, who always turn out in force and encourage the boys.

Thanks also to Mark Bryant,Chris Allan,Phil Olds, Ben Fox and Adam Hosking for their extra help with coaching, it was evident on Sunday that the boys had taken in what they had been taught. Thanks to Chris,Denise and all the ladies in the kitchen and bar, who have fed and watered us during the season.

Nigel, Phil and Andy

Redruth under 16's lose to Truro in the Sevens Final

On the last day that this immense group of players would play together there was a twist in the tail of the Truro –Redruth rugby story.

For such a long time Truro have been overshadowed by the Reds, who in the history of Redruth rugby are arguably the most successful mini-junior side of all time.

Both teams eased into the Cup finals stages, with the Reds possible favourites to lift another County Cup, but Truro’s never say die approach was to win the day.

The Reds started well enough but ran out of gas, as Jake Champion opened up a weak looking Reds defence time and time again.

The Reds seemed lost, with key players finding the heat of the match and the day to much to handle.

Truro won the match convincingly and in a strange way if the Reds had to lose, I for one am glad it was to Truro, who coach Grant Champion thanked after the match for the years and battles we have had together.

All at Redruth hope that the injury sustained to Jake Champion was not as serious as it looked……..

Finally Phil, Dave, Paul and Nigel would like to thank the lads for nine happy years…over to you Blakey.

Under 11's Bath Report

The under 11's travelled to Bath with having played well there last year only to fall narrowly to Bath A in the semi final.

This season has been one of more Ups than Downs with some really good performances but the team let itself down in the County Cup so this was the chance to show what they could do.

The squad played their hearts out in all 4 games of this tournament only to suffer the disappointment of conceding a try deep into injury time against Havant which knocked us out at the same stage as last year. In the group stage we didn't concede a try and beat the Bath B team 1 - 0 after a close and hard fought battle, drew with Avonvale 0 - 0 and beat Avon 5 - 0 with Matt Lawrence bagging 2 tries.

As a result we went through as group winners and Bath B as the second place team. In the other group Bath A and Havant went through. Bath A beat Bath B and we produced one of our best displays of the season to hold the strong Havant team despite losing Jack Simmons with a neck injury which needed a trip to hospital on a stretcher and stopped the game for 10 minutes. Fortunately Jack is fine and Wayne and Anne brought him home later. After restarting, the Reds held the upper hand for most of the 2nd half but the ref played On and On and On and On and awarded Havant a penalty which they took quickly and scored in the corner to the sound of the final whistle.

No sour grapes, Havant were also a good side and the way the team stuck to the task showed great promise for the future.

Here's to next year. We'll be back! Stewart.

Under 13's Sevens

The under 13s travelled to Camborne for this our first Sevens competition.

First round, first game guess who Truro's A team. The Reds started very strongly and dominated much of the fist half even looking like they had scored but it was not given. Just before half time a Truro player broke through to run nearly the length of the pitch to score.

The second half of the game was fairly evenly matched, again just before the final whistle with a long kick and a lucky bounce they scored again.

In the next match saw the Reds versus Penryn here the Reds took control of the game to win convinsingly to finish second in the group to go to the semi final of the plate.

After lunch the semi finals first Truro B team v Penzance with Penzance winning. Then Redruth v Liskeard again the Reds dominated the game to win convinsingly.

In the cup semi final Truro A also won conviningly against St Ives. The other match saw St Austell just pipped Newquay to the final.

The final of the plate between the Reds and Penzance was a hard fought contest the Reds Just winning 7/5 but there was a couple of nasty injuries, Conner of the Pirates breaking his collar bone and Chris damaging his knee again.

Pictured the Reds with the plate and their hard won medals.

In the cup final Truro beat St Austell, to be double champions. Our thanks to Camborne RFC for an excellent day, all the officials, all of the teams, and a big thank you and sorry to all of the squad who did not make the sevens team after all of their effort and support, the team could not of done it without your help.

Under 8's at The Bath Festival

A big well done to the boys that travelled up to Bath. The day was fantastic with the weather not only staying dry but warm . Redruth opened their campaign against Corsham and convincingly beat them 9 - 4.

Next we were up against a very well drilled Bath A team. It was end to end stuff all the boys playing very well, in the end it was 10 - 10 which to be fair to both sides was probably a just result.

Lastly we faced Winchester in a very important game which we needed to win to progress further. Winchester win the toss and start, within second they are 1-0 up, moments later 2-0, however rather than hanging their heads the lads do the opposite. They raise their game and come out fighting by half time it was 4-4, then with a nail biting finish the final score was a 9-8 win for the Reds.

Bath A as winners went through to meet Havant in the semis, we were paired with Bath B.

Again end to end stuff with neither team being able to make any breakthroughs, the match finishes 8-8 but Redruth went through because of a better try count overall.

Now to the final, perhaps for some as expected Redruth v Bath A, the game is kicked off by Bath and soon it was all action with tries being scored by both sides, Redruth managed to get a turnover just before half time and the scores are equal at 4-4. The Reds kick off for another action packed half until the final second where we were drawn 8-8 and Redruth gets the ball, we attack and the ref decides that our lad was fending off a player trying to tag him (a first all day) , Bath get the ball and score, low and behold the whistle goes to leave the game 9-8 for Bath A.

The team then picked up their medals from Ex England Coach Andy Robinson

The team are; Back row from left to right, Connor Gilbert, Jordan Goldsworthy, Jack Hitchens, Henry Eddy, Dominic Goodwin and Jack Morrison Front Row from left to right, Luke Grigg, Bradley Rowe, Sam Richards and Kieran Hicks. Coached by Roger Eddy (who thankfully hid his legs behind the boys )

One final note, all the parents and boys send their best to Jack Simmons who was injured during an u11 game while playing for the Reds, hope you have a speedy recovery.
