Latest Injury Update

Some bad news on the injury front, reports David Penberthy. Hooker Sam Harrison has broken his thumb and will be out of action for approximately 4-6 weeks. Sam sustained the injury in Saturday's game against Bath United and spent the night in Treliske undergoing examinations and waiting for a possible operation. However, the operation was not necessary and Sam is now recovering but in plaster for about 4 weeks. We all wish him a speedy recovery and an early return to playing…..

Match Day Help - We Need You !

Match days at Redruth are increasingly busy but fun. We are appealing for more help on the day, no matter how small your contribution may be. From help on the gate, selling match-day programmes, stewarding duties to bar help. Any assitance would be very welcome, an hour maybe two in the day, with a great team all working towards one goal - ensuring supporters enjoy their visit to the Recreation Ground and making it all work on and off the pitch.

Please contact David Thomas on 01209 217419 or 07944 633106 to discuss more. Many thanks.

David Penberthy Monday 17th September

Some very sad news to start off this week, and I feel extremely bad about not mentioning anything last week. John Phillips who was one of Redruth's great players of the 50's and 60's sadly passed away unexpectedly a couple of weeks ago. John attended the Players Reunion at the end of August and seemed to be his usual self and not short of his usual pieces of advice for the up and coming season. John was a very proud Redruth man and represented England Schools in the same team as Club President Derek Collins, John also represented Cornwall with distinction. I remember John playing when I was a ball boy at the club and I recall him being a bit of a goal kicker in his day! It is always a sad time when former great players, such as John, leave us but for many he will be remembered as a very colourful character who epitomised what Redruth Rugby is all about. We observed a one minute silence for John on Saturday and our sincere condolences go to his family.

Club President Derek Collins added that John was a man full of wisdom who always liked to pull your leg, a really good friend indeed and a quality player & team leader. He will be sadly missed by us all.

A big thank you must go to Richard Eddy and his family for the kind donation of 4 tickets for the England v Tonga game. As you may know we tried selling them on our own website but ended up selling them on eBay. The sale raised a total of £128 which is all very valued income for the club.

So onto rugby, and what a great afternoon's entertainment on Saturday when Bath United were our visitors. A very young Bath team, that contained a number of England internationals at under 18, 19 and 20 level stormed into the lead after scoring a couple of very good tries. It took us a while to settle and that is understandable as we have not played for 2 weeks and we did look a little rusty, However, following a fairly robust team talk at half time, the 2nd half proved a totally different affair although Bath did get within a score late on only for us to pull away again at the death. The 2 week break has done us no real favours so early in the season, but I must say a big thank you to Frank Butler and Bath Rugby for sending a good team down. I'm sure there are a number of players there who will feature in Bath's first team in the not too distant future.

This coming Saturday we travel to Southend to renew acquaintances after a 2 season break. Southend won National 3 South last season and come into this league with a lot of confidence of moving forward. This will be no easy game for us and we will have to prepare really well. It's a long trip and we will leave mid afternoon on Friday returning in the early hours of Sunday morning. We are staying in Brentwood on Friday night. Hopefully we will see a number of our die hard supporters there and hopefully we can give you something to cheers about. There are a couple of minor knocks in the squad but, hopefully, nothing too serious …..

So then, nothing too surprising with the England result! …. Only joking…..what a pile of rubbish. I predicted 38 - 18 to the Boks and got close with their score but I never expected England not to score! Take nothing away from the Boks, they were good, but England offered nothing and I suppose you could say they were lucky to get nil!!! Where too from here? With Jamie Noon on his way home, our only shining light, Jason Robinson, seemingly crocked, Barclay and Wilkinson still recovering from injury and Vickery suspended, we have one hell of a task to salvage some pride and make it through to the knock out stages ….BUT its not only England who are struggling…..

Ireland were so lucky not to have been beaten by Georgia, Wales looked like they were going to be hammered by the Aussies but did manage to salvage something. No surprises elsewhere with the All Blacks putting a 100 past Portugal and the French claiming the scalp of the Namibians quite convincingly, I was surprised though that Tonga beat Samoa. This is a crunch week coming up and can England at least put something together to beat the Samoans? It's going to be hard…team selections will be a headache, who will captain the side, will Farrell make the team????? Id I were picking the team this is probably what I would go with:-

Tait, Cueto, Hipkiss, Barclay, Lewsey, Wilkinson, Gomersall, Sheridan, Chuter, Stevens, Shaw, Corry, Moody, Easter, Rees.

Replacements: Freshwater, Mears, Dallaglio, Borthwick, Perry, Catt, Flood.

Score predictions for the up and coming games are as follows:-

South Africa 78 Tonga 15

England 26 Samoa 22 (Really sticking my neck out on that one!)

Wales 48 Japan 18

Australia 56 Fiji 27

Scotland 35 Romania 9

Italy 38 Portugal 19

Scotland 15 New Zealand 53

France 25 Ireland 9

Argentina 46 Namibia 8

Last weeks predictions were dire! In summary, here is what has happened so far, with actual scores in brackets:-

France 24 Argentina 20 (12 - 17)

England 64 USA 12 (28 - 10)

Australia 49 Japan 7 (91 - 3)

New Zealand 38 Italy 14 (76 - 14)

South Africa 42 Samoa 18 (59 - 7)

Wales 55 Canada 8 (42 - 17)

Scotland 58 Portugal 3 (56 - 10)

Ireland 88 Namibia 0 (32 - 17)

Argentina 54 Georgia 6 (33 - 3)

USA 18 Tonga 16 (15 - 25)

Japan 30 Fiji 28 (31 - 35)

Italy 56 Romania 12 (24 - 18)

England 18 South Africa 38 (0 - 36)

New Zealand 120 Portugal 6 (108 - 13)

Wales 17 Australia 30 (20 - 32)

Ireland 67 Georgia 12 (14 - 10)

Fiji 20 Canada 24 (29 - 16)

Samoa 35 Tonga 13 (15 - 19)

France 69 Namibia 15 (87 - 10)

A date for your kids diaries … The Rugby Academy will be at the club again in the half term break on October 31st for 3 days. The cost is £90 and it will be hosted by a top International Player. There will be free T shirts and the opportunity to get autographs plus some top class training. Please contact Rugby Matters on 0845 227 0075 or email info@rugby-matters.com. Special discounts are available.

There was another successful Sunday morning this weekend that saw the 1st XV squad joining in with the Mini/Junior's at their training session. The players split themselves and worked with age groups from Under 7 to Under 15. I know the kids really enjoyed themselves as did the players. Further sessions such as these are planned in the future...

Another plea ….. I need a sponsor to cover the cost of a car for one of the players. Unfortunately the current arrangement this player has is not sustainable … please have a word with me direct if you are interested and can help ….. 07703 255377.

So that is about it for this week…..it will be good to get back into league action after the 2 week lay off…..as you may know some teams did play last week, Westcombe Park achieved their second 5 point haul by beating Southend, Waterloo beat Manchester and Cambridge disposed of Nuneaton. It's going to be a very competitive league this season and there should be some very good rugby coming up in the next few weeks…...

Back next week … cheers for now.

David Penberthy

Director of Rugby

Redruth 50 Bath XV 33

Redruth Head Coach, Nigel Hambly, was very grateful to Bath for bringing a side down to give much needed game time to many of the Redruth first team regulars before they resume league action at Southend next week.

The young Bath team, with a number of England Under 18s and 21s in their side, certainly gave their hosts just the kind of workout needed after Redruth’s layoff because of players being away on duty with England Counties. The pace and skill shown by the visitors enabled them to dominate the first half hour of this high scoring encounter but in the end the experience and power of the home side gave them an eight tries to four win.

It took seven minutes for Bath to get on the board with a well worked try from Chris Jones converted by Luke Cozens. Pace once again opened up the Redruth defence two minutes later when George Hughes crossed for the first of his three tries.

After eighteen minutes the Reds put together their first meaningful attack into the scoreboard corner which was quickly moved left for Paul Thirlby to touch down.

Cozens added two more penalties for Bath before half time but the best move of the afternoon came after thirty five minutes when Redruth’s Faleono Seve broke out from deep in defence to go the length of the field combining with Steve Wood and Lewis Vinnicombe to finish off by touching down in the corner.

With his charges trailing by 10 – 18 at half time Hambly needed one of his trade mark team talks! It did the trick and in the second period the home pack gained the upper hand enabling Redruth to start to play a much more controlled and attractive game.

Second half tries for Redruth came from Seve, James Mann, Ben Priddey (2), Chris Fuca and Steve Wood with Gareth Griffiths adding three conversions and Grant Thirlby two. The visitors added two tries from Hughes whilst Cozens added another penalty and conversion.

Hambly was satisfied with his side’s second half performance which he hopes will stand them in good stead for the league campaign that now gets underway in earnest. The older men's experience came through agaianst the young boys, and the game had a lot of major plusses the Coach added. The 3 week break has done us no favours, but the back row shone through and we look forward to returning to Southend next week, Nigel added.
