REDRUTH U12S WIN DERBY ENCOUNTER

CAMBORNE U12S   0   REDRUTH  U12S    28

On a cold, dry Sunday 21st November, the undefeated County Champions Redruth u12s travelled the short distance to derby rivals Camborne.
Redruth, with a squad of 25 players, were upbeat to play on the Camborne main pitch and were lead out by captain Bradley Rowe.
In the first half the rugby was predominantly played in the homeside half with Camborne proving to be difficult to crack as they showed some resolute defence but their defence was finally broken when Outside-Centre Tom Govier sliced through the Camborne backs to score. (B.Rowe converted).
At half-time with the score Camborne 0 Redruth 7, Redruth made 12 changes guaranteeing all their squad a minimium of a half of a game.
The forward dominant Camborne, now starting to tire, and with the Reds moving the ball out quicker, Colin Hendy seized his opportunity by finishing a great backs move.(J.Morrison)converted).

Then shortly after, Redruth Man of the Match Sam Hayward, scored 2 similiar tries – both powerful driving runs. (H.Eddy and S.Richards converting).
With the match finishing at Camborne 0 Redruth 28 there was some fantastic, tough rugby played throughout by both sides.
Redruth would like to thank Camborne RFC for the hospitality and good sportsmanship shown at the end.

Redruth 22 Cambridge 30

Match report by Roger Watson

A well organised Cambridge side saw off a spirited Redruth second-half comeback to take the spoils in this seven try thriller.

It was Mark Bright’s 100th appearance for the Reds. Despite skippering the side, leading them out, putting in another Man of the Match performance and scoring one of his trade mark tries he was disappointed to see his side fall short against the title chasers.

From the outset the visitors looked confident with the ball in hand turning down two penalty kicks at goal before winger Michael Ayrton opened the scoring with a well taken try in the corner.

Redruth struck back when Bright drove over from a lineout, Aaron Penberthy adding the extras. Despite this it was the visitors who dominated the first half with Ben Cooper touching down, and Ben Spencer slotted the conversion home to make it a seven point score. The Redruth defence, combined with a number of handling errors by Cambridge, restricted the half time score to 7 – 12.

After the break The Reds took the game to the visitors, Jack Nowell showing his mettle to score an outstanding solo try which Penberthy converted. Penberthy struck again with a penalty to put Redruth five points in front. With Redruth in control and repeatedly going forward a memorable win seemed to be within their grasp.

Cambridge showed their class and dug deep to be rewarded with a penalty in front of the posts which Spencer kicked with ease. A forward drive from a lineout put Mark George over before Spencer added another penalty.

The bonus point was secured for Cambridge when good handling by the backs saw William Robinson race over for the try, with Spencer converting.

The never-say-die spirit of Redruth ensured that the last word went to the home side, Mark Richards scampering over for a try, but the losing bonus point was missed as Penberthy’s conversion attempt went wide.

Afterwards, Bright expressed his pride at reaching the 100 game milestone but said that a win would have meant much more.

It’s disappointing not to have given our supporters the result they want but the boys are doing their best. We need to stop giving away silly penalties and doing the wrong things in the wrong areas. Cambridge are good at what they do and they pounded us in the first half but it’s heart breaking when we had the game won and then let them back in.

What a difference a week makes!

Posted under Director's Commentary,Headlines by admin on Monday 15 November 2010 at 4:24 pm

What a difference a week makes! Saturday’s performance at Cinderford was much improved and the willingness and team spirit was certainly up there. Don’t get me wrong we are certainly not getting carried away with anything and we still have a mountain to climb, but you have to take days like Saturday and build on them, build on the performance, build on the team spirit, build on the willingness to push themselves to the limit for their team-mates and celebrate the success with each other …. I sincerely thank Bert Viner and Derek Ladner for continuing with their Supporters Bus last Saturday and to those who travelled I hope you found it worthwhile. About 20 odd made the trip and the support was superb and the reception the boys received at the end of the game was priceless .. ..thank you!

Travelling on the day of the game is not ideal but it’s something the boys have all signed onto in order to save money. There are lots of things this group of players have had to contend with over the past few months, not least people walking out on them last Saturday when we were beaten by Sedgley Park. I can totally accept the performance was poor but please give these players your support through thick and thin. I was totally amazed, and hurt if I am honest, at some of the comments levelled at the players. I struggle to comprehend how people can turn so quickly on players and have such an impact, mentally, on them. I would suggest those who think they can do better get out there and try it!

England played as well as I have seen an England side play for many years on Saturday when the beat the Wallabies. Quite simply, they were superb! I can’t recall sitting and watching an international and enjoying it so much! The Wallabies are not a bad side and a good wildcard bet for next year’s World Cup, but on Saturday they were quite simply second best! I thought Tom Croft was outstanding, Chris Ashton proved what a potent attacking force is, Hape and Tindall were solid in the centre, Cueto played his best game for a long while, Flood was a revelation with his goal kicking and Foden looked dangerous whenever he got the ball. Ben Youngs, deservedly, won the Man of the Match award with an outstanding display at 9. The forwards worked manfully and provided good ball for the backs all afternoon. Hopefully they can build on this performance and win both remaining games against Samoa this weekend and World Champions South Africa the following weekend.

On Sunday of next week I am off to Cardiff for a couple of days primarily to watch Peter Kay at the CIA next Monday night. However, I am also taking advantage of the fact that Cardiff Blues are playing a Magners League match against Ulster on Sunday afternoon! I have not been to the new stadium in Cardiff before so this will be another new experience. Obviously neither team will be at full strength owing to the Autumn Internationals but I am sure the rugby will be entertaining. It will be good to get away with Nigel to watch some rugby. This will be the first time this season that we have watched a game together!

It’s good to hear that Jeff Knuckey is working hard on compiling a Redruth Rugby Football Club “Hall of Fame” where all players who have achieved honours and accolades during their careers will be recognised. It is planned that the launch of this honoured group will be March next year.

On Monday 27th December, when we entertain Camborne at home, we will be having a Red Blazer day which will double up as a Player’s Reunion as well. Work will start in the next few days of getting people together. The cost is being finalised shortly but it will be no more than £10 which includes admission, buffet etc. I also understand that all future Camborne v Redruth games will be played for a trophy. Rodda’s have kindly agreed to donate a trophy and sponsor this derby and the plans are already at an advanced stage to have 2 games per season. The return leg this year will be on Easter Monday at Camborne.

Saturday sees the visit of Cambridge to the Recreation Ground (kick-off 2:30pm). Their recent problems have been well documented, but they must be mightily relieved that their intended rescue package has been successful and their future is pretty much secured. The effort put in by the individuals concerned is admirable and the player’s commitment is commendable. More importantly, through the period of unrest they have continued to achieve superb results on the field and they will provide us with a huge challenge at the weekend!

Finally, congratulations to Mark Bright who will play is 100th First XV game on Saturday. Mark joins the illustrious Red Blazer gang and I know he will wear his blazer with pride (when he gets it that is!!!!) News on that front, I am hoping to get something finalised this week on a supplier so those who are entitled …. please watch this space!

That is it for this week …. hopefully back with you next week ..

Redruth U9′s v Helston U9′s

REDRUTH DO IT AGAIN

REDRUTH 65 – HELSTON 10

Redruth U9′s were home again for remembrance Sunday and welcomed Helston U9′s to the Rec. All  teams and coaches paid their respect with a minute’s silence for remembrance day, before getting  down to the job in hand. Redruth had control straight from the sound of the whistle that opened the  game with some impressive runs and ball control. With a lot of strong tackles going in against the Helston side it ultimately led to the Reds securing turnover ball many times, which upset the opposition and put them on their back foot.

The Reds were eager not to let their opponents into the game, and it seemed to be an explosion of  Redruth tries one after another, with Redruth’s Adam Hall scoring a hat-trick. As the game progressed Helston found there rucking and mauling game and started to apply pressure onto the Redruth Defence and this ultimately lead to Helston winning the ball in mid field and produce huge pressure and drove the Reds back over their own try line for Helston to score their second try of  the day.

Redruth showed were shocked back into action and started to play a more running and passing game and avoided the close contact stuff. They played great passing rugby and used quick ball to gain advantage time and time again. Helston on the back foot produced a number of  excellent try saving tackles and never gave up, but the support play and passion for the game by the Reds just proved too strong and saw Redruth run in thirteen tries to Helston’s two, which earned Redruth U9′s their third consecutive win.

Final Score Redruth U9 65 v Helston U9 10

Thanks to Helston for a great game and who showed us on occassions that we can be rucked and driven off the ball- something to be worked on in Training Boys!!!! But ultimately it was another fine performance from Redruth who have really clicked and have a great team spirit. The boys are Brimming with confidence and are looking forward to the next match – Bring it on Boys

Cinderford 17 Redruth 18

Posted under Headlines,Match Reports by admin on Sunday 14 November 2010 at 12:00 pm

Match report by Ed Bawden

Redruth survived a furious late onslaught by Cinderford to hold on to a vital win in the relegation zone.

Two tries by Mark Bright – captaining the side in the absence of the injured Darren Jacques – and some outstanding goal kicking by teenager Aaron Penberthy gave Redruth a commanding 18-3 lead at the interval.

Redruth, with Ashley Morcom starting in place of Jacques and Will Penney instead of Damien Cook in the forwards, had a tremendous opening 20 minutes.

Penberthy put over a massive penalty from the half way line in the third minute to put the travelling Cornish supporters in good voice.

Lewis Vinnicombe, back in the side after injury as Tom Notman was unwell, then came close to a try following a kick and chase. From a 5 metre scrum Bright stepped inside the home back row to touch down a try in the 10th minute that Penberthy converted with a tremendous kick from the right hand touchline.

Davies hit back soon after with a penalty from in front of the posts but Penberthy restored the 10 point advantage with a penalty from 35 metres in the 13th minute.

Good play by Danny Trigg and Dewi Scourfield created a golden chance for Cinderford in the left hand corner but Paul Thirlby, who with Nathan Pedley defended well in the centre, saved the day for the Reds with an crucial interception.

The class of Vinnicombe was evident as he cut the Cinderford defence to ribbons, offloading at the try line to create a 2nd try for Bright just before the interval.

The Foresters substantially raised their game in the second half though. Nevaro Codlin was outstanding with his powerful running, and the pace of replacement Matt Betty was also a big threat to the Reds. However due to some outstanding defending by the Cornish side and a collection of wrong options taken by Cinderford there was no scoring until Redruth hooker Richard Brown was sent to the sin bin for coming into the side of a ruck with 12 minutes to go.

Cinderford took advantage immediately and with only seven Redruth forwards to defend a 5 metre scrum, referee Matt Carley judged the Reds to have collapsed it deliberately and awarded a penalty try that Mark Davies converted.

As the game entered injury time replacement hooker Koree Britton forced his way over for a try following a series of pick and drive moves on the Reds line the referee consulting with his assistant Lloyd Jackson before awarding the score. Davies converted from wide out on the right to narrow the gap to a single point.

During a tense 6 minutes of stoppage time with spectators on the edge of their seats, Redruth held on for the win by keeping play in the Cinderford 22 with a series of pick and drive moves.

Betty ran out of defence in the last play of the game but Vinnicombe forced him into touch near half way. With the final whistle blown, the travelling bands of Cornish supporters gave their team a hero’s welcome, and finally got to return home over the Tamar with four league points in the bag for the first time since February.

As an aside, former Cornish Pirates & Redruth forward Adam Nicholls made a welcome return to the Cinderford side as a second half replacement after missing 18 months due to injury.

STRONG WIN FOR REDS

REDRUTH 70 – TRURO 25

Redruth U9′s welcomed Truro U9′s to the recreation ground on Sunday 7th November for their second home game of the season and were excited with what they might achieve. Right from the start of the match the Reds went forward and dominated game play. The Reds kept the basics right, possession, rucking and at times on the breakdowns turning the ball over, which allowed them to take control and soon saw them put some points on the board by scoring two tries before Truro secured their first, but not their last.

With each Reds attack, the Truro sidecame back each time with moreaggression, but this didn’t upset the Reds as they kept their heads, and stuck to their game
plan. With the game passing by the Reds got more confident and they took charge of the game and ran in a total of fourteen tries to Truro’s five.

With two excellently taken Redruth hat trick’s for Tom Morrison and Jago Ford

Final score Redruth 70 v Truro 25

A great game played by both teams with the future of rugby in Cornwall looking strong

Scorers: Tom Morrison (3), Sam Hicks (2), Jago Ford (3), Lewis Wills (2), Adam Hall, Samuel Churchill, Bailey Berriman, Kian Hocking.

REDRUTH U12′s 21 vs. TRURO U12′s 0

JOINT COUNTY CHAMPIONS REMATCH – BOSSED BY THE REDS!

On a cold day, and a very waterlogged pitch, Redruth keenly welcomed an undefeated (this season) Truro.
The Reds were eager to prove themselves after drawing the County Cup Final with Truro last season after having retained it for 2 seasons previous.
Captain Angus Hallam won the toss and elected to kick-off.

Josh Hart led by example by making an early big tackle. From that moment on a determined Redruth were hardly made to retreat to their own half as the organised forwards drove and rucked extremely well. With the pack working really hard and gaining yards constantly, Angus Hallam was given the ball 10 metres out where he drove and dived over the try line taking three Truro players on his back, (Jack Morrison converted). Eight minutes later Josh Hart, who without doubt had his best performance in a Red shirt ever, scored a similar and deserving try by powering over the line (Ryan Daughtery converted).

With Redruth continually pressuring Truro and camping on their try line, last play was called as Truro had a scrum. A fortunate try was scored by an unusual error of the Truro backs and an opportunist Luke Grigg spotting a loose ball in the try zone. (A video Ref would have been useful!!).
Half -time whistle went with the Reds really buzzing and leading 21-0.

With lots of changes made at half time and throughout the second half, Redruth were now in a confident move as every player played their part and for each other. Truro were an improved team this half and made some breakaway moves but the Reds hounded them down and defended superbly.

The Final whistle went and the squad celebrated their deserving victory against their always tough opponents. From the coaches perspective it was a very good all round performance and it is fantastic to see the team improving and maturing together and enjoying their rugby.
A MASSIVE WELL DONE, enjoy the victory and keep up the hard work!!
