Redruth Rugby Community Sports Coaching Academy

Redruth Rugby Academy students in the community and on the beachThe Redruth Rugby Community Sports Coaching Academy has a strong link between Redruth RFC and Redruth School. The aims are to provide pupils with a player pathway in rugby, along with an academic structure at the school for future career prospects. The academy is for any players wanting to develop their performance, whether it is to play for Redruth Rugby’s 1st XV in the future or even just to play at a recreational level and from a health and fitness perspective to stay engaged in sport once they are post 16 years of age.

It has been running for three very successful years and the numbers of players are increasing each year. The basis of the Community Sports Coaching Academy is to provide the players with an all round balance between studying for their A levels and playing regular competitive rugby against other schools and colleges. The players have a scheduled week with their academy coach (Steve Kenward) which allows them to have organised and structured sessions three times a week. This includes strength and conditioning, ball and team skills and a recovery session in the swimming pool. The Academy players get the opportunity after a game to analyse both their personal and team attributes towards their match via a DVD analysis session.

The Community Sports Coaching Academy work alongside Redruth RFC and specifically with the Colts section, they have a very strong relationship in balancing the different types of sessions the Academy have throughout their week. We feel it is important for the players to have this balance and not overload during the week so that they can perform to the best week in week out.

Redruth Academy reaching high in CornwallThe school is proud to state that 100% of all our Community Sports Coaching Academy players have passed their respected courses which give them the opportunity to plan their future career. Three players are going onto different universities next year to a degree in their chosen field and now with an extra qualification of a Gym Instructor’s Course their chances of finding a job are much improved.
