Redruth U12′s v Helston U12′s

REDRUTH U12s 49 (7) VS HELSTON U12s 7 (7)
GAME OF TWO HALVES
Mild, damp, drizzly conditions welcomed our guests from Helston and both teams were buoyed and excited to have the opportunity to play on the Main Pitch and use the First Teams facilities. Captain for the Day: Tom Govier, led the boys onto the pitch to a huge cheer from the main stand – he won the toss and elected to kick off. Two new faces to the starting line-up made their debut: Liam Barkwill and Conner Hendy.

After last weeks great performance, complacency had obviously sneaked in, especially after a powerful driving run from Jordan Goldsworthy, who ploughed over the try line for the first score of the day, converted by Jack Morrison. From that moment until half time, Redruth unusually made mistake after mistake. Helston capitalised on the continuous knock-on’s and poor passing and pounced onto a poor pass to run clear, score and convert the first points against us this season. With the Reds drawing 7-7 at half time and playing so poorly there were some severe words(!) and changes during the half time talk.

The Reds soon bounced back to be more like themselves as Josh Hart stole the ball 2 metres out and squeezed over the try line (Bradley Rowe converted). Redruth, looking a lot more positive and stronger, then turned over the ball 10 metres out from the Helston try line and the backs set up an easy score for winger Jordan Nosworthy by swiftly passing and using the overlap (converted by Ryan Daughtery).

Now with confidence high and some lovely direct running from Josh Hart and Bradley Rowe, Bradley split the Helston defence into 2, made good ground and was 5 meters out when he set up the ruck for Ryan Daughtery to dive over the try line on the blindside (Sam Richards converted).

Jordan Goldsworthy then scored a great individual try with a powerful straight run. (Harry Whinney converted). The backs, who by now had improved their passing by concentrating on simple passes, set up debutant Conner Hendy to dart over the try line (converted by Adam Grigg). Helston now understandably deflated, conceded try number 7 as the backs fed out the ball for Captain Thomas Govier to score (converted by Josh Hart). The final whistle went with the score very flattering towards Redruth (49 – 7)although this does not reflect the performance of the Helston team. There is certainly lots to think about and work on looking towards the Truro game next week.

BUT to win that well, and yet play poorly, shows what a good standard we, as a squad, have.  Helston thanked us for the hospitality and sportsmanship showed towards them and said their team thoroughly enjoyed the experience of using the changing rooms, running out of the tunnel and playing on the main pitch – as did our Boys and Girls!
Well Done All!

Redruth U10′s v Perranporth U10′s

Posted under Under 10's by Chris Sidwell on Sunday 31 October 2010 at 6:59 pm

On a damp, but mild Sunday morning, Redruth U10′s entertained Perranporth U10′s at the Rec. Perranporth arrived in confident mood on the back of three victories over Penryn, St.Agnes and Falmouth, but they found the Reds in no mood to surrender an undefeated home record which goes back to when they were U7′s.

The game took the format of 3 ten minute sessions, this allows all players to have game time and stays within the regulation time of 30 minutes, set by the RFU.

Perranporth won the toss and elected to start with the ball, but from a fumbled pass, Redruth pounced, moved the ball wide superbly through their backs and after a great offload from Jordan Opie, Patrick Wilkins scored in the corner. With strong tackling from both sides, it was Jordan Sidwell, with an excellent solo run from inside his own half, who beat three would be tacklers to bring home the next score. Redruth now dominated the open play with good defence, handling and support play, but it was Perranporth who managed to do very well at the set pieces. Three further tries from Matt, Jordan S and Jordan O. left a shell-shocked Perranporth team 25 – 0 down after ten minutes.

With a change of personnel, the second an third 10 minute sessions were a lot closer affairs and, to Perranporth’s credit, they really did play well and were unfortunate not to score on a couple of occasions. Their tackling and team ethic will stand them in good stead for the rest of the season, and I’m sure they will give us another good game later in the season. Four further tries were scored by Jack, Jordan S and 2 from James Murray.

Final Score: Redruth 45 – Perranporth 0

Team with scorers in brackets: Patrick (1), Matt (1), Jordan O (1), Jordan S (3), Jack (1), James (2), Aaron, Toby, Ryan, Luke, Will, Ruben, Thomas, Cameron, Charlie and Darren.

Which way shall I go?

Good concentration Thomas!

Jordan Sidwell who scored 3 tries today

Good Contest!

Match report by Ed Bawden

A serious neck injury to Redruth full back Brett Rule overshadowed another tough day on the road for the reds as they shipped 6 tries to an impressive Stourbridge team at Stourton Park.

Rule had already made a try saving tackle on Matt Williams when in the 10th minute he slipped going into a tackle and took an accidental but nasty blow to the head. He was down for 5 minutes receiving attention from physio Tim Powell.

Rule bravely played on but in the 32nd minute he hurt his neck stopping Stour scrum half Tom Richardson in the build up to the hosts 3rd try. After another 5 minute delay Rule was carried from the pitch on a stretched and taken to hospital, fortunately he had feeling in his arms and legs but was expected to be detained overnight.

Training 24-9 at the interval Redruth seemed dead and buried, but the Cornish team showed some character by having the better of the 3rd quarter when they touched down a catch and drive try from a line out by Mark Bright, subsequently converted by Aaron Penberthy.

Replacement Jack Nowell, who started on the bench as he had been away with England under 18’s training during the week, had a cracking game with several good runs out of defence. Young wingers Tom Notman and Matt Bowden also enjoyed some good moments.

Stourbridge opened the scoring after 3 minutes when the outstanding Richardson put flanker Rupert Cooper over for a try in the left hand corner after 3 minutes.

Redruth playing with a strong breeze hit back with three well struck penalties including one from the 10 meter line from Aaron Penberthy to lead 5-9 after 23 minutes.

Skipper Ben Hughes charged over for the hosts second try after 27 minutes and James Rodley touched down the third try after 32 minutes that the impressive Cameron Brown converted.

In first half injury time prop Will Davis on loan from Worcester charged over for the bonus point try that Brown improved to give Stourbridge a commanding lead at the break.

Bright’s try kept Redruth in the game and although they had chances they turned the ball over too often.

Stourbridge finished strongly with full back Jamie Hearn and Ali Bressington going over for tries in the final 11 minutes, with former Redruth player Luke Cozens converting the second with the last kick of the game.

Wadebridge u12′s v Redruth u12′s

WADEBRIDGE  U12s  0 (0)    REDRUTH  U12s  59 (33)          (Half time in brackets)

On Sunday 24th October 2010 perfect conditions again welcomed us as a 16 man squad (10 players missing) journeyed to our usually difficult hosts at Wadebridge RFC.
Captain for the day, Jordan Nosworthy, won the toss and elected to take the kick-off.
From kick-off to the final whistle the Reds played some awesome team rugby, playing some of the best rugby this age group has ever produced.
The dominant Forwards played extremely well, doing the basics superbly and turned over many rucks, mauls and scrums which set a great platform for the backs to perform their free flowing passing rugby.
The specialised forward training with coach Sully on a Friday night is really coming to fruition with the pack developing and becoming more effective, which in effect is improving the whole teams performance. The Backs also today showed at times some sublime attacking, passing rugby with clinical finishing.
The coaches were all extremely proud of whole the team performance today, everyone showed great sportmanship and discipline. The big problem for the squad now is that you’ve really set the standard at a high level and you know we wont accept anything less!

 A MASSIVE WELL DONE!

Redruth 27 Tynedale 22

Posted under Headlines,Match Reports by admin on Sunday 24 October 2010 at 11:00 am

Redruth gained a much needed bonus point win in this seven try thriller at the Recreation Ground. Despite complete domination of the first half, the home supporters had to endure a nail biting finale as The Reds held on for victory.

The home side were quickly out of the blocks, keeping Tynedale penned in their own half for much of the first period. Turning down three chances at goal in the first quarter, The Reds showed their intentions but the visitors’ defence held firm against some enterprising attacks despite having prop Douglas Jupp spending ten minutes in the sin bin for foul play. Redruth’s back row made regular inroads and created the first score when Man of the Match Owen Hambly made a great solo run to finish off a move started by fellow flanker Chris Fuca. Aaron Penberthy added the extras.

The home pack took control, Luke Collins, Damien Cook and Mark Bright much in evidence. Penberthy and Gavin Beazley exchanged penalties before Redruth capitalised on their dominance of the half with Matthew Bowden crossing twice in five minutes for two excellently taken tries to give the home side a comfortable seventeen point cushion at the break.

A five point home win looked on the cards but Tynedale started the second half with much more purpose and were rewarded with a well taken try when scrum-half Matthew Outson opened up the defence for Gavin Beazley to convert. A sustained period of pressure from the Redruth forwards saw skipper Darren Jacques go over for the try which secured the bonus point, converted by Penberthy.

The visitors showed their mettle winning more possession to get their back line into the game. For their part The Reds started to make handling errors as they became more jittery. Seb Visser finished off a good attack to touch down for Gavin Beazley to make it a seven point score. Three minutes later the home crowd were silenced by Visser’s second of the afternoon to put the visitors back to within five points with fourteen minutes of the game remaining.

The Redruth pack led the way in looking after the ball during the closing stages and finished the stronger as they held on for a hard fought victory.

David Penberthy, a relieved Redruth Director of Rugby, felt that this had been his team’s best performance of the season.

This is what we have been working towards and it has finally come off. We really needed to score first after half-time to finish them off but we gave them a glimmer of hope and they came back strongly. We showed real courage to hold on but we still need to learn how to close the game out. I’m sure we will build on this and get even stronger.

Loans, Leagues and Leeds

Posted under Director's Commentary by admin on Wednesday 20 October 2010 at 1:02 pm

It’s really hard to find the strength and time to write these days! Following a reasonable display against Barking we travelled to Otley with confidence. The journey went OK as we travelled to Yorkshire in people carriers which is yet another way of us saving money. If I am honest the player’s prefer this mode of transport as it gets us there and back much quicker. On the downside it splits the team up which, ultimately, can have an effect on team spirit. However, all was good and the Village Hotel in Leeds looked after us very well ….

Otley find themselves in a very similar position to ourselves and between us we are doing our best to cope with the demanding times. However, with honour intact, we are both adamant that we will see these tough times through and ensure that our clubs are left with strong foundations for the future. The game was a good one for the spectator but a very frustrating one for me and the rest of the party! I have said it many times over the past few weeks, but when you are in a rut, those 50/50 decisions always seem to go against you and Saturday was no different. After looking at the DVD I am even more frustrated!! There were a number of decisions made by the referee and called by the touch judges that were dubious to say the least. However, we have to accept the decisions made and get on with it …. Bloody tough but there we go!

This weekend Tynedale visit and the games get no easier! Hopefully we have a big crowd and please give the boys a real lift …. They deserve it!

I was having a chat with a few mates the other day and we got around to talking about websites and discussion forums. It was mentioned about some comments being made on Rolling Maul about our recent cancellation of our Junior Development game with Camborne. Intrigued, I decided to have a read … I have never heard such a pile of dross before. It’s not often we have to cancel fixtures and it was a last minute decision that enforced this. We genuinely had no front row forwards available for selection. That was the first game cancelled by us this season and I would add that we have rearranged the game for this weekend. We are always looking for fixtures as many teams “cry off” from playing us. So far this season we have had Launceston and West Country Warriors pull out of fixtures.

There were also questions raised about loaning players out. Unfortunately we can’t loan to anyone in Cornwall as there is no team within 2 levels of National 1. The laws are clear and state that Loan Signings can only be effected if the team you are loaning to are within 2 leagues within the League structure. In our case we can loan down to National 3 South and no further. We also have to try to ensure we have meaningful fixtures for our Development Team. Players who play in this team face the possibility of being called into the 1st XV. It is unfair on them to be playing certain games 1 week then be expected to perform in National 1 the next week. Trying to find quality fixtures in Cornwall & Devon on a regular basis is very difficult as clubs are tied up with league fixtures. The answer is to allow us to enter a league! We have tried this but the CRFU will not allow it. Most teams we visit around the country compete within a league structure within their relevant counties.

When the Championship came into force the RFU muted about a league structure for National League Clubs 2nd XV’s .. what has happened to this????……nothing!! This season there were mutings of a 2nd XV Cup competition .. at this time …… nothing!!! We have tried entering the West of England Merit Table but teams will not visit us because of the distance …. So gentlemen we are stuck with what we have and who we are!!

I understand that Dings Crusaders provided some very good opposition on Saturday and I extend my sincere thanks to them for making the trip. We will definitely return the fixture later in the season and hopefully we may be able to sort a couple more. Good to see Neil Douch and Dan Job doing their bit again … also good to see Steve Wood back in amongst it after a long spell on the sidelines.

Congratulation to the Colts who won their under 19 National Colts Cup game on Sunday. They now play Taunton, at Redruth, in early November.

The Heineken Cup certainly threw up some spectacular rugby on Saturday again. It’s all “nip and tuck” at the moment and the Group of Death is no further forward with London Irish, who defeated Munster the previous week, falling at The Ospreys who in turn were beaten by Toulon the previous week, Munster then turned over Toulon! The Scarlet’s, who were outstanding the previous week, were hammered by Leicester but dark horses Northampton had a good win in Edinburgh. For me .. heart says Munster but ….. head says a French team!!

There is a great ad on You Tube featuring the All Black team members showing off their skills (check “All Blacks Skills”), however there is now a newer version by the Brumbies .. you should check it out under “Brumbie Skills” .. really good!

Finally, it would be remiss of me to forget this … X Factor is back and yes I am an avid viewer on Sundays … Matt Cardle is the man for the job without doubt!!!!

Hopefully back next week

Cheers for now

David Penberthy
Director of Rugby
