As the sun went down, the glitterati of Redruth descended upon the Penventon Hotel for Mark and Mandy Bryant’s swanky annual Black Tie Cabaret Evening.

After a delicious four-course meal had been enjoyed by all in the company of the Redruth players, the charity raffle comp-aired by Bert Viner saw a great selection of prizes dispersed amongst the attendees, with Chris Fuca celebrating his 100th game by grabbing a brace for himself! Richard Eddy then expertly conducted an auction of some high-quality alcoholic refreshments before the cabaret acts took to the stage.

Supporting act vocalist Mark Lean warmed up the dance floor with a stirring performance, and then the evening truly kicked off as outstanding Abba tribute band Abba Fever took to the stage for a two-part set of epic proportions filled with ballads, party hits, costume changes and an impromptu stage invasion for the encore! The frivolity then continued into the early hours with players, patrons and party-goers making the most of the Penventon Hotel’s excellent hospitality.

Were you there? Check out the Black Tie Cabaret Evening photo gallery to see if you were captured on film, thanks to the camera work of Alan Nettle.

If you missed out on the great night’s fun, then your opportunity to be a part of the next all-star Redruth Rugby event is just around the corner, with the culinary skills of Rick Stein and his team providing an exquisite gastronomic experience at the Royal Cornwall Showground on the 17th March 2010. If that wasn’t enough, you’ll be eating in the company of British Lions Matt Dawson, Keith Wood, Nick Beal and Simon Easterby amongst others!

A brace of tries from James Tincknell sealed a well deserved five try win for the Dalesmen to secure the double over a lack lustre Redruth.

Chris Fuca, making his hundredth appearance for the Reds, led the home side out to a warm welcome from the Recreation Ground faithful but the crowd were left with little to cheer for the rest of the afternoon.

Wharfedale opened brightly, looking dangerous from the start but it was Redruth who were first on the board with a drop goal from seventeen year old Aaron Penberthy, son of Director of Rugby David Penberthy, making his first start for the Reds. Three minutes later a confident Penberthy struck again with a penalty to give the hosts a six nil lead after ten minutes. Penberthy did well with his passing and kicking from hand and warranted the award of the Redruth Man of the Match.

The visiting pack soon started to take control with lock Alistair Allen much in evidence. A twenty metre forward drive from a lineout saw the ball go wide for full back Luke Gray to touch down, Mark Bedworth adding the extras. A Redruth error gave the defence little chance as Iain Dixon raced over for the second try, Bedworth converting.

Mark Bright was sent to the sin bin for a foul tackle as the visiting forwards set up another try scoring opportunity, this time for James Tincknell. A touch line fracas resulted in another yellow card for the Reds as Lewis Vinnicombe was punished for his part in the affray.

It was more of the same from The Green Machine in the second period. A drop goal from Gray was followed by the best try of the afternoon as Andrew Hodgson and Tincknell, supported by Christopher Steel opened up the defence with some splendid interplay before Tincknell touched down. A try by Latu Makaafi was converted by Bedworth.

The Reds battled on and had the last word with a try from Bright, converted by Penberthy with seven minutes left on the clock but it was too little too late as they slumped to their second heavy defeat in as many weeks.

Redruth had boasted the second best defensive record in the league after Esher, but have now shipped eleven tries in their last two outings leaving the coaching team with much to ponder before next week

I am not sure where to start this week following the shambolic performance at the weekend. It was very unpleasant to witness and I know the players are unhappy with the way they performed. I am not taking anything away from Blaydon, they were very good and it was one of those days where everything worked for them. They had not played for 6 weeks and maybe we were a little complacent thinking they would be a bit rusty, however those thoughts were dispelled very quickly as they made huge inroads into our territory and took advantage of our lack luster attitude and their support play was superb. Match report by Ed Bawden

Blaydon ran in six tries as they gave Redruth a very uncomfortable 80 minutes in the north east.

In truth Redruth could not have complained if the score had gone past 50, on a cold overcast afternoon the Reds were outplayed throughout and have just a couple of tries as consolation for the long trip back to the Duchy.

It did not look as if it was going to be the Reds afternoon straight from the kick off, as indecision allowed the ball to bounce and Redruth were immediately on the back foot. Left wing Adam Armstrong soon kicked a penalty from in front of the posts in the 4th minute to put Blaydon ahead. Powerful centre James Fitzpatrick was a constant threat to the Reds normally watertight defence all afternoon, and a missed tackle on the left hand touchline was the start of a long run and good support from Kerry Wood enabled Simon Barber to touch down a try that Armstrong converted, opening up a 10 point lead after 11 minutes.

Redruth had a good spell of possession but turned the ball over too many times and poor kicking gave Blaydon plenty of chance to counterattack. Blaydon missed a certain try due to a knock on with the line beckoning but Armstrong added a second penalty after 27 minutes. From the restart Blaydon hit Redruth with tremendous support play that ended with Wood going over for an unconverted try wide out on the left, and they missed another good chance soon after.

In first half injury time a strong run by Luke Collins playing on loan from the Pirates followed by quick passes from Mark Richards, Brett Rule & Craig Bonds saw Lewis Vinnicombe go around his man to touch down his 13th try of the season in the right hand corner.

Any hopes of a Redruth comeback were ended 5 minutes into the second period when a strong run by Fitzpatrick set up a try for Armstrong which the winger also converted. Wood touched down his 2nd try following good team play from Blaydon in the 49th minute before being replaced by Mark Wilson. Replacement Richard Carroll breathed some life into the Reds pack when he came on as a replacement and touched down a try following a catch and drive from a line out.

The hosts continued to have the better of the game playing good open Rugby and finding gaps in the reds defence, former Wharfedale skipper Andrew Baggett touched down a 5th try after 63 minutes as Redruth were forced to work hard to keep the score down. Replacement Nick Simmons was tackled into touch near the home line but Blaydon had the last word as big number 8 Gavin Jones strolled down the reds left flank for a try that Armstrong converted.
