Redruth U16′s vs Truro
The first match of the season for the Reds and what a match against old rivals Truro RFC. The Reds scoring first and looking strong in the first half to lead at half time 15-5.
Here we are again and today’s little ditty will be a shorter than normal piece.
Great win up at Nuneaton on Saturday and the first 5 point haul of the season. Nuneaton are a tidy young team and never gave up. In Mike Umaga they have a first class coach and I am sure they will do well this season.
I went up to Exeter yesterday to watch Exeter Academy play the South African Afrikaner Under 19′s team. It was a very good game that ended up a 10-all draw. Some very good players on show again for both sides and it was a bit strange me supporting my son in an Exeter shirt …. but nevertheless it was great for all of them to play at such a great stadium.
Esher continue their march on at the top of the table with a hard fought win over London Scottish while Cambridge had a close call against Newbury. Manchester conceded yet another ton at Wharfedale and our neighbours Launceston had a close battle against Stourbridge.
Obviously this week we are home to Blaydon, who are travelling by air once again, and then we go to my favourite ground on the circuit: Wharfedale! I absolutely love that place and I am looking forward to meeting Mick and Rod again. Its always a great shame that we can’t stay longer there as it is still very much a real rugby club and the people are as staunch as our own supporters but fair. Hopefully the weather will be kind once more and we’ll see a good game of rugby …. more next week on this one …
Good to see the Development team get some valuable game time this past weekend. They made the trip to Exeter to play Exeter Athletic at Sandy Park. The boys had an early kick off and then watched the Exeter Chiefs v Plymouth Albion game. If my sources are correct Martin Johnson and his England team have nothing to worry about following the injury to Ricki Flutey….the Bossman put in a wonderful performance that sees him rise up the rankings in the England No 12 position! I am told he was devastating in attack and defence and was the stand out player in the team …. my source, yes it was Bossman himself, is convinced that the "Red Rose" is just around the corner! Well he is probably right as he does live fairly close to Tesco’s!!
On the wider international scene, former Australian wing man Lote Tequiri is now a favourite either to join the Ospreys or Toulon … my money is definitely on the big spenders from France.
Tasman Mako’s had a great Air New Zealand cup win at the weekend over Auckland by 12 points to 8 points. The Mako’s now occupy 5th position – just 1 point behind the qualifying group. Its now a real possibility that they will make the semi-final stage for the 1st time ever.
However, as Tasman continue to stake their claims the New Zealand Rugby Union have on Sunday announced their plans for a new ten-team Air New Zealand Cup and Division One Championship.
NZRU Chief Executive Steve Tew explained that four outfits competing in this season’s top division will find themselves demoted into the second tier. Tew said that the new format – from next term – will provide the most suitable fit in the financial climate alongside fitting in with the Super Rugby schedule. He also revealed that it was a fair process when deciding who would face the drop.
"[They] are reasonable and good indicators of who should be in this competition and who should not be," said Tew, speaking to NZPA. "If those criteria mean your union isn’t one of the ten then you’ve got every opportunity with the support of your community to stick it back to us next year and win the [Division One] competition." The four sides facing relegation have yet to be made public and Tew was under no illusions that there will be a heated response from the quartet. "There’s an unfortunate inevitability about that but you can’t cry away from decisions that are necessary and right," he said. "We hope they will reluctantly accept their situation, bite the bullet, buckle down and work really hard so they’re in a good position to win the competition next year." However, in a change to the original structure that was announced two months ago, there will now be just a one-up-one-down system from next season instead of two. "[There was] a fair amount of anxiety among provincial unions that we would create a lot of instability and uncertainty with that number of teams being in promotion or relegation zone," explained Tew.
England captain Steve Borthwick should be fit for the November internationals as his eye injury was not as bad as first feared. The Saracens lock was caught in the face by Olivier Azam’s boot during the 19-16 victory over Gloucester at Vicarage Road on Sunday. Borthwick received five stitches to his right eye by club medics at the ground, although he was sent to London’s Moorfields Hospital for further tests. Scans on the injury, though, have revealed that there is no further damage – with Borthwick expected to be back in action within two to four weeks.
So that’s it for this week, look forward to catching up with everyone this weekend
Cheers for now

Last Sunday saw the senior team spend the morning with the mini’s (7-13yrs), passing on their skills and knowledge.
The children and the coaches really appreciated them giving up their Sunday mornings, especially after a hard game the day before and look forward to the next session.
A big thank you from everyone

The start of another week is upon us and its time to reflect on a very entertaining game of rugby on Saturday. I would say Esher were probably the most complete team I have seen at Redruth for a very long time. They were superbly organised, had quality players throughout their team and I would stick my neck out to say that they will be returning to the Championship at their first attempt. In all honesty they should not even be in this league, it was only the league re-structuring that saw them relegated in the first place, then there was all the issues with London Welsh and their possible demise that put Esher back on standby to return, but they are where they are and they are going to be extremely difficult to beat. On saying that I was hugely proud of our effort on Saturday. Never once did we take a backward step and I am sure that Esher returned to London knowing full well that they had been in a game! From the 1st whistle the game was taken to the visitors and with the second play of the match going through some 16 phases I think we all knew it had the makings of a cracking game: no one could of left the ground disappointed.
I was particularly pleased with the fact that our back line featured 6 ex-Colts who all performed exceptionally well. I was also pleased that Nigel’s selection received a welcomed pat on the back! I thought his use of the bench was as good as it has ever been with the players going on picking up the gauntlet and carrying it forward like the remainder of the team did for the 80 minutes. Many people came up to me after the game and said how much they enjoyed the game and praised the effort of the team … I am really grateful for those comments because it has been a tough few months getting things organised for this campaign, and when you receive compliments such as these it makes it all worthwhile …. the benchmark has now been set and it is vital we carry this on into the season: Nuneaton being next on the list. They have had a good start to the season with a good win at Cinderford at the weekend. I know there is a supporters bus going so we are hoping for lots of support!
Sunday was an experience! Now that is a fairly big statement to make, but a Saturday night without a beer, believe me, was even more of an experience! I had a hang over from hell the next day and that only after having 3 bottles of Magner’s! Mind you at

Redruth U19′s Colts moved into the next round of the National cup, with a wn at Torquay RFC on Saturday 19th Septemeber. Whilst several former colts where playing for Redruth 1st XV, this years crop of colts where away to Torquay Colts. Very little was known about our opponents prior to the fixture, although their Devon league results show they are a very good unit, who could put a big score on the board.
Redruth led ably by Adam Lewarne looked to have the best of Torguay in the pack, technical ability winning the day. Redruth stole alot of lineout ball, with either James Tixeria or Lewarne spoiling on many occassions. Ben Gregor had a great game for the Reds and was the travelling supports man of the match, just getting the vote aheadof no.7 Lewis Moyle, who work rate and power is developing every game. Richard Kevern was also key for the Reds, working well from great ball from the scrum halfs John Jackson and Simon Richards.
Craig William put an early easy penalty miss behind him slottting in the conversion to a Moyle try. Torguay came back at the Reds with an unconverted try, 7-5 was the half time score.
Redruth had contined the dangerous backs from Torquay until, an overlap with Torguays right wing saw the Reds wanting. The Reds hit back from the re-start, with dominent forward play driving them over in the corner. Williams attempt from the touchline just dropping short. 12 all and 2 minutes to go…Torguay charged the Reds line, Moyle again working like a terrier turned over the ball and a great slot kick from Kevern saw the Reds back in the Torquay 20 meter area. Reds won the line out, and Kevern attempted a drop goal. From the 25 meter re-start, the Reds again piled on the pressure. A pentalty for hand in the ruck gave Williams a 30 meter kick which he planted staight in the middle of the posts.
Final whistle Torquay 12 Redruth 15….Redruth face Brixham at home in the next round.

This weekend sees Esher make a return to the Recreation Ground, aiming for it to be their last visit for the foreseeable future as their sights are set on an immediate promotion into the newly-formed Championship. The fifth and final of the clubs to be relegated last season, Esher ignored the writing on the wall at Christmas (only four wins and a draw against Exeter from 18 games) to win 8 of their next nine fixtures, with only Leeds Carnegie able to hold back the tide of points. However, their good form in the home straight abandoned them as the fixtures got tough once more, and successive defeats to Doncaster, London Welsh and Bedford rendered the Surrey side’s 2009 revival meaningless.
Few people predicted anything but an immediate bounce back for Esher this season, and those that did maybe reviewing their predictions in light of Esher’s record-smashing 0-148 demolition of hapless Manchester, followed by their 62-15 destruction of Cinderford. In the context of such scorelines, Esher will be looking to improve on the last fixtures between the clubs in the 2006/07 season when they won the National 2 title at a canter.Early tries by James Mann and Nathan Pedley weren’t sufficient to stay ahead at the Rec that year as Esher returned to England 15-30 victors. Later that year a stronger and more confident Redruth side trounced their opponents 12-22 in the cup only to come just short in the league a week later, losing 23-19 with two late Mark Bright tries.
No notes last week and late again this week …. what is the world coming to!
So we are 2 games into the season now and 2 pretty difficult games out of the way. I suppose you could stick your neck out and say they were games we could of won but we have to be happy with 4 points at this stage, and don’t forget we still have 28 games to play yet …. Saturday’s game at Launceston ended up as a bit of a nail biter, I must say I was pleased that it did end up as close as it did because at one point it looked as if it could of been 50 points! I think Launceston deserved their victory and all credit to them, we now look forward to another toughie with Esher our visitors this Saturday. Hopefully we will get a big crowd and see some good rugby.
The previous week we did well to get back into the game and secure a draw with highly fancied Cambridge. They looked very sharp and will pose a number of problems for sides this season.
On Sunday just gone a young Development team travelled the short distance to Plymouth for a game against Westcountry Warriors. For 65 minutes the boys were very much in the game with very good performances from last years Colts captain Tom Duncan, former Colt Josh Morgan and Steve Kenward was solid in defence in the outsides. The great "Bossman" entered the fray with 15 minutes to go and made a spectacular catch to mark a very difficult up and under from the Warriors 10, however this wonderful piece of athleticism was soon outweighed by one of the most ……. well I can’t find a word to describe it but something along the lines of pathetic fits …. pieces of kicking out of hand I have seen …. I am sure he will love telling everyone what it was like … put it this way it was almost as funny as when Dellboy fell through the bar in Only Fools and Horses ….
In a move that will have the rugby world bowled over with delight, SANZAR have officially extended an invitation to Argentina for the Tri-Nations. The announcement was made on Monday, and the invitation is conditional on the Pumas having their best players available and broadcasting approval, which may cause problems for those Puma players who ply their trade in Europe. But the invitation is for the Pumas to join from 2012, meaning the UAR has nearly three years in which to either boost their domestic league or encourage their finest to join teams in the southern hemisphere.
French club Bayonne have pulled out of talks with dumped Wallabies winger Lote Tuqiri because of his "latest financial demands". "Following the latest financial demands of Lote Tuqiri, Bayonne have decided to bring talks with the Australian player to an end," the Top 14 club said in a statement. The 29-year-old Tuqiri was last month cut by the Australian Rugby Union halfway through a five-year contract reportedly worth 588,000 US dollars a year for undisclosed reasons. Earlier reports in the French press had indicated that the former Waratahs speedster had come to a verbal agreement to sign a two year contract with the Basque club. The 57-Test veteran winger came to France at the end of August to discuss a possible contract with Bayonne and also the Paris-based Stade Fran
