Southend, the doctor and points

Posted under Director's Commentary by admin on Wednesday 25 February 2009 at 12:00 am

Another 5 points in the bag and the race at the top is really hotting up now. With Birmingham, Tynedale and Cambridge all picking up 5 points it now looks a 4 horse race as to who gets the 1 promotion position this season. The game on Saturday was a little stop/start but we did score 8 tries and some of them were as good as there have been at Redruth this season.

Southend were by no means a bad side, they have been seriously hit by injuries over the last few weeks but did cause us some problems. However, a win is a win and we now move on to Cinderford in a couple of weeks time. The player who was injured, Simon Hoult, made a full recovery and returned home with the team. we all wish him a speedy recovery and hope that his injury does not prevent him from playing.

A name to watch for the future is that of Tom Casson, the young Southend centre who is also a member of the Saracens Academy. I thought he had a great game on Saturday and scored 2 very good tries. He has now been selected for the England Under 20′s team that will play their Irish counterparts this Friday in Athlone. Another who played against us on Saturday, James Short, is selected for the same team.

A point to note …. there are conflicting League Tables around at the moment! If you look at the BBC website etc you will see Redruth on 80 points and Birmingham on 69. If you look at the NCA site and Statbunker you will note Redruth have 80 points and Birmingham 70. I have asked for clarification and confirmation from the NCA/RFU.

Well done the dancing girls at half-time on Saturday. I have never seen the stand so packed at half-time.

I went to Launceston last Tuesday night to watch the Development Team play Launceston in a Super Cup game, and what a great game it was. It was a most welcome run out for the boys who have been starved of rugby since Christmas with no one accepting a fixture. Both sides fielded strong teams but the boys ended up winning 32-20.

On Saturday the boys had the luxury of their 2nd game in a week!! They won convincingly at St Austell. Hopefully the RFU’s plan to introduce a Merit Table featuring all National Leagues Development/2nd XV’s will come to fruition next season and bring much needed competitive rugby for fringe players. It is vital, at Redruth, that we maintain a quality squad that boasts the cream of our young and up and coming players and provide them decent rugby so that if they are called into the 1st XV they will have had decent preparation and be match fit!

A proposed rugby match between the Springboks and New Zealand Maori in the South African township of Soweto is likely to be cancelled because of racism laws. The national rugby unions have been working to organise the June match which would have acted as a warm-up for South Africa ahead the British and Irish Lions series.

The match would also have provided competition for the New Zealand Maori team which has no international program this year because of New Zealand Rugby Union (NZRU) budget cuts. The sticking point around the match was a ruling of the South African government’s President’s Council prohibiting the Springboks from playing against racially selected teams. The Maori team, comprising players of indigenous heritage and which has been used as New Zealand’s international second-string or ‘A’ team at times in recent seasons, would technically fall into that category.

Colts National Cup quarter-final opponents

Posted under Colts News by admin on Wednesday 25 February 2009 at 12:00 am

Redruth’s opponents in the quarter finals of the National Colts Cup were confirmed on Sunday as a trip to Essex to play Colchester, who ran out worthy winners 40 points to 5 against Bishop Stortford (the Reds semi final opponents from a couple of seasons ago). The date and kick off time are yet to be confirmed.

Colchester are unbeaten this season and have the scalp of London Irish under their belt from an earlier round – they were also quarter finalists last season. No doubt they will provide a stiff test on their own patch for a Redruth side that has stuttered through most of the season showing just glimpses of form.

Meanwhile, Redruth Under 17s reward for finishing top of the Cornwall under 17 merit table is a draw against Newbury in the first round of the National Under 17s cup, due to be played on the 8th March – kick off and venue to be confirmed.

Truro 11 Redruth 50

Posted under Colts News by admin on Tuesday 24 February 2009 at 12:00 am

Redruth Colts romped to an eight try to one victory over a depleted Truro side in the Cornwall under 18 cup. The Reds fielded a strong side with several players available after injury and exploits with Truro college. The young Reds took command from the kick off and never looked in any trouble on a sunny afternoon in benign conditions.

Although Truro gave a game performance they had no answer to the power and pace of the rampant Redruth side, with wing James Williams and Hooker Ben Gregor both grabbing a couple of tries each and other big performances from Adam Lewarne Will Nankervis and Richie Kevern

REDRUTH U’8s vs CAMBORNE

Posted under Under 8's by admin on Monday 23 February 2009 at 12:00 am

REDRUTH U8′s AT CAMBORNE

Sunday 22nd saw us make the short trip to our neighbours at Camborne. A typical grey February morning didn’t put off any of the squad turning up with 15 out of the 16 registered player present, well done parents!!

After a warm-up session and a chat with the Camborne coaches, they willingly agreed to play two games against us seeing that we had enough players to make two teams, very sporting as they only had eight players turn up.

For the first game, Julian and I agreed to field our strongest side, as Camborne had played very well against us earlier in the season. I was slightly concerned going into the game, as a lot of the boys didn’t seemed to be switched on at all. As the game kicked off, (for the second time, thanks Peter for pointing out Camborne had 10 players to our 8), I needn’t have worried, for as the whistle went, so the boys switched on. Great defence turning the ball over time and again coupled with the ability to pass before being tagged meant we were able to score 6 unanswered tries before half-time, although I must admit the referee was more than generous on a couple of occasions. The second half progressed in much the same way with good play throughout from everyone. The final score was Camborne 1 – Redruth 11.

Team with Scorers in brackets: Charlie S (1), William K (1), Thomas B (3), George H, James H, Jordan O (2), Jack G & Jordan S (4).

The second game got under way, allowing everyone in the squad a chance to play. thanks to William and Jordan O for stepping in and making the numbers up to eight a side. Having watched the first game I really thought the boys would have been inspired into playing in a similar fashion, but to be fair it was Camborne who were inspired. They really found their feet and began to score some good tries, although we did miss a lot of first up tags. Good individual runs from some of the Redruth players was good to see, but our support was to flat or we dropped the final scoring pass. Our defence didn’t come up in a line, something we do well in training but fail to do in matches, good defence is the best way of getting the ball back from the opposition. Lots to work on in training over the coming weeks. On a brighter note James Murray showed good catching skills and great pace to score a hat-trick of tries, always special against Camborne!!

The final score was Camborne 10 – Redruth 7

Team with Scorers in brackets; Jack R (1), Matthew P, Aaron K (2), Jordan O (1), William K, James M (3),
Declan A, Luke M, Thomas P.

SUNDAY 1st MARCH – Away to Lankelly-Fowey. Please try and be there by 10.30am at the latest. One of the few grounds I haven’t ever been to, but I would allow yourselves an hour to get there, especially you Mrs.Harris!!

See you Friday.
