Colts weekend round-up 22nd November

Posted under Colts News by admin on Monday 24 November 2008 at 12:00 am

This coming weekend, Redruth Colts have Just the one fixture at home to Wiveliscombe with a 12.15 kick off venue yet to be confirmed.

Redruth Colts 62 Launceston Colts 10.

Another fine away win for Redruth in the group stage of the Cornwall under 18 cup.

The young Redruth side, starved of several of their players by injury and south west trials over the weekend, played with confidence and freedom as they racked up 10 tries to the one of the home side who also were below full strength.

Redruth crossed the line as early as the first minute only for the home side to land a penalty from in front of the post. The Reds score again immediately again Launceston came back with a try after a interception from their own try line – 14 points to 10 the reds lead after 5 minutes.

This looked at this stage to be a close match but the Redruth pack established their dominance and never looked back with Redruth clocking up 6 tries in the first half.

After the break Redruth used all their young replacements and continued to dominate in all phases of the game, leading to four more unanswered scores.

Redruth Scorers:

Tries – Craig Williams 3, James Williams 2, Ben Gregor, Kieron Thomas, Matt Wedlake-Millicam, James Tiexiera, Richie Keverne.

Conversions: Richie Kevern 4 Craig Williams 2

A Sunday lunchtime kick off saw Redruth under 17s away at Helston in the Cornwall under 17 merit table as Redruth try to qualify for the national under 17competition. Redruth win 48-0.

Redruth were far too strong for a game Helston side and ran out winners by eight tries to nil with scores for Damian Lynes a hat trick and two for Ben Drew. Other scorers Jon Jackson, Nathan Strick, and James Tiexiere with Craig Williams adding 4 conversions.

It’s moving time….

On the 5th anniversary of England Rugby’s greatest day, I thought I would take a couple of hours away from packing for my imminant move, and watch England play the South Africans. I have not had much opportunity to watch the “new” England team as it ventures into the exciting Martin Johnson era. Well, I think I would of enjoyed filling boxes more than watching that pile of rubbish!

All week the Boks have been bleating how tired they were and that they were looking forward to their summer break ….. thank you South Africa for being so tired and only putting us to the sword by 42 points, heaven forbid what you would of done if you were just getting into your stride for a new season!

England were beaten in just about every department, South Africa’s defence was immense and with people like Victor Matfield and Bakkies Botha in your side you have the right not to fear anyone! Quite frankly, Danny Cipriani was crap and Schalk Burger along with a number of other Boks smashed him at every opportunity. England were totally dominated in every facet of the game and spilled far too many chances when they presented themselves. Hopefully this will be a mighty wake up call for the Lions for next year!

I was looking forward to a number of great challenges along the way, “The Beast v “The Raging Bull, Sackey against Habana, Flutey against De Villiers and James Haskell and Tom Rees against Burger and Roussouw (is that spelt right??). None of them really stacked up, Vicks was off after 50 minutes, Sackey after a very shaky start under the high ball made a few telling breaks but all too often dropped the ball and the back row challenge was keen but the Boks certainly came out on top.

I thought Haskell played well as did Lee Mears although he missed a couple of crucial line outs. Delon Armitage continues to impress and is the 1 shining light amongst the newcomers. One thing Johnson did get right was to withdraw Tom Palmer after 28 minutes. He had already given away 4 penalties for going off his feet at the ruck. Flutey was gone early as well but that may of been through injury, I am not sure. Steve Borthwick doesn’t inspire me as captain and surely there are better centres than Jamie Noon.

I was glad to see Simon Shaw get his 50th cap but I bet its a game he wished had come on a different day …. Shaw is one of the best ball handling and skillfull players in the game, hopefully he gets a start next week. Another thing is that we never seem to have a clear link between 9 & 10, it always seems cluttered with players.

Onto Cipriani, and he really did have a mare. He had 3 kicks charged down in the 1st half with yet another try coming from one of them. He looks low on confidence and I think he should be taken out of the firing line …. maybe he’s getting too much press outside of rugby that is affecting his game.

Johnson was obviously down beat in the press interview but did state that the squad he has is made up of the best players in England …. I wonder what his selection will be next week. I’d give Crane a start at No 8 in place of Nick Easter who, I thought had a poor game and his kicking was even worse!!, find a 10 from somewhere, Stuart Barnes maybe, there isn’t much more than you can shout about or do is there?? I suppose that there are still injuries etc.

On reflection I suppose you can’t build a new side overnight, I remember being at Twickenham about 5 years ago and England were triumphant that day by 50 clear points. I hope Jonno gets it right, I am sure he will, and I suppose we have to remain upbeat as this group of players look likely to be taking us into the 6 Nations.

Another thing that gets on my goat is that Nigel Owens, the ref! God is he patronising and so full of himself ….give me Spredders any day!

Wales fronted up well in the Haka but seemed to have thrown everything into that and the first 20 minutes of the game. That, obviously, would never be enough against an All Black team that are rightly the best team in the World at present.

Wales should have learned from the Aussies who advanced on the Kiwi’s Haka in the Rugby League World Cup Final on Saturday! They to went into a commading lead early on, but the Kiwi’s threw the record books out of the window and duly went on to win the World Cup in the Aussies back yard …. good on them! Mentioning the Haka, how much as that changed over the years! It’s almost like a theatre act now with real passion playing the lead ….. please don’t ever let that be taken out of the game!

Congratulations to our Colts Under 18′s who won their latest group cup match at Launceston buy a margin of some 60 points. The boys have not enjoyed good home form in this competition so far and are finding themselves under a great deal of pressure to get into a qualifying position ….sources tell me that coach Simon Blake was seen wading into the River Tamar to save a “ball bag”!

No I’m not referring to a player, one of the Colts bags that carries the training balls blew away with the wind and ended up in the River that runs along the bottom of the Launceston complex. rather than letting it find its way to the English Channel, Simon waded in waist deep to rescue it! I#m all for saving money so well done Blakey that’s another

REDRUTH UNDER 9′s UPDATE

REDRUTH 55 CAMBORNE 10

On the 2nd November Redruth entertained Camborne in the 1st local derby of the season. It was great to see Niall return to the club and captain the Camborne side, I know our boys were pleased to see him. As with many local derbies the match was played at a teriffic pace, with both sides keen to make progress down the middle of the pitch. The tackling was fierce and both teams competed well at the breakdown. The Reds certainly showed what great skills they have in both attack and defense, always keen to turn ball over and run at the opposition. All of the Reds played to their potential and Camborne could not match the pace and power showed right across the Redruth team. Tries were scored by Liam (6), Ollie (2), Jack T, Jonathan and Bradley. Many thanks to all of the supporters and well done to the boys for playing at such a great tempo!

ST AUSTELL 5 REDRUTH 25

On the 16th November the Reds travelled to St Austell where a decision was made to play 2 matches. Game 1 started brightly with both sides showing strong defensive lines. The deadlock was broken when scrum half George B, picked up from the back of the scrum and scampered over in the corner. Liam extended the lead with an excellent run.

After half time the game continued to be a close affair, but gradually the more powerful running and dominance at the ruck and maul payed off for Redruth with further tries from Liam and Bradley (2). St Austell replied with a well taken try of their own.

ST AUSTELL 10 REDRUTH 40

Match 2 saw the Reds make several changes and new positions were tried by many players. The Reds really opened up in this game and the excellent passing was a particular highlight. Tackling was also exceptional with some typical big hits being put in. Tries were scored by Jack T (2), Ollie (2), Liam (2), Matthew and Jacka. As I have said to the boys on several occasions, scoring passes are just as important as tries and there were two outstanding assists from Liam and George B, well done boys!

Well done to Jacka and Josh, the 2 captains on the day, also well done to Jack F on making his debut. It was great to see how well the squad is gelling and to see some of the decisions that are being made on the pitch. I would like to thank Neil Stevens of Frame UK for the kind sponsorship of our new match shirts which were proudly worn by the boys.

What a week that was…..

Late again …. very sorry about this but I do have a reasonable excuse! At last I can say that I am finally moving back to Redruth!

For the last 6 years I have been living in Taunton and have been regularly commuting to and fro and believe me I’ve racked up a few miles! I have been trying to sell my house since May and have been one of the lucky ones to succeed. So come next week I will have packed up and moved on …. it does feel good to be able to say that!

Anyway, so much for all that …. just as well there is no game this weekend or that would of put me in a position!

Firstly, anyone who wishes to sponsor the ever-popular Man of the Match or Match Ball please contact Jeff Jnuckey on 01736 850039. I think the match ball slot for the Cambridge is up for grabs, entry, photo post match with the ball presented by the Man of the Match. Jeff would be delighted to hear from you on this and other sponsorship avenues.

The news is out and would imagine that most people are aware of what is going to happen in National 1, National 2 and below. If you haven’t heard the news let me break it to you!

The RFU Council backed recommendations from the RFU Management Board for the Championship (Replacing National 1) to form a new professional tier below the Guinness Premiership, with Council voting against an amendment deferring its formation until 2010/11.

It also approved recommendations from the Rugby Landscape Task Group that include discontinuing the National Trophy and Intermediate Cup competitions; expanding the leagues at levels three (currently National 2) and four (3 North and South) to 16 clubs per division and at levels five and six to 14 clubs per division; the introduction of National Championship Finals; and the introduction of reserve leagues at levels three, four and five.

Martyn Thomas, who is Chairman of the Rugby Board said “Council spent three and a half hours debating these important issues and I thank them for giving them such careful consideration.”

“Negotiations over the reduction of the size of First Division Rugby have been taking place since November last year and there was universal agreement that moving to a 12-club league was the way forward.

“It is the best way to ensure a high level of competition that will accelerate the development of young English players, coaches and referees, and Council decided that the journey should start as soon as possible.

“Clearly the league will not become fully professional overnight and there is much detail to be put in place but we look forward to doing so with stakeholders from First Division Rugby, the National Clubs Association [who represent levels three and four] and the Professional Rugby Players Association.”

Further discussions will take place about a meaningful fixture list that will guarantee a minimum of 32 games for Championship clubs each season consisting of league games and other competitive matches, including a proposed two-tier Anglo-Welsh competition.

Live television coverage has been secured with the agreement of Sky and Championship clubs will receive projected central funding of

REDUTH U10′s vs St AUSTELL

Sunday saw the under 10s travel to the St Austell RFC where on the last visit they won the county championship without conceding a try. Yet again we were somewhat blessed by grey skies and a gentle breeze and a relatively dry playing surface, good rugby weather.

After waiting until 11:30 for the pitch to be available, our captain for the day, Dominic tactically lost the toss (or so he says)

The Reds returned to competitive rugby on Sunday with an eagerly awaited visit to St Austell. The Saints traditionally have a large pack and Sunday was no exception. Man for man they were considerably larger than our lads.

The match itself provided several lessons for the Reds, one of which was that if you are facing a much larger pack you must move them around and try and tire them out. Bearing in mind our large squad, it was decided that we would play three halves. The first period proved to be a bruising affair with the Saint encamped in our
