Redruth Under 9s versus Liskeard

The fourth match of the season saw a longish drive to Liskeard for the Reds to play their first match in wet and windy conditions. This was Liskeards second game of the season and they could only field 7 players so Ollie, Sam and Robbie joined Liskeard. This provided a 10 v 9 players match – which I hoped would ensure we had a proper match as well as not having anybody waiting in the rain to play. Given Liskeard’s lack of matches and practice opportunities we also agreed to stop the game whenever a ‘learning point’ could be explained to the players.
Captain for the day was Connor – whose only mistake in the whole match was to lose the toss – so Liskeard kicked off. Within a few seconds the first tackle had been made, the ball ripped from the opposition and a quick pass saw the Reds get their first try.

Given the wet and difficult conditions I thought the Reds gave their best team display so far. The defence as ever was outstanding and not once did Liskeard get close to our try line. The big improvement was in passing and releasing, keeping the ball moving, with great support play meaning there was always a player to pass to or to provide support in the ruck or maul. Only twice did we knock on which given the wet and greasy ball was outstanding. The time getting used to the greasy ball, sprints and turns on the slippy surface before we played really paid off.

Final score was I think 12 tries to nil – and it was a credit to Ollie, Sam and Robbie that the score was not higher – they put in some excellent defence in a team that lacked the players and experience of the Reds – but again kept on trying to the end.

As usual this season difficult to pick out individuals in such a good team performance, Connor played a captains game, Ciaran scored a try and could have scored again if he didn’t leave the ball behind. Jack H played his best game of the season – although I think at one late line-out his sympathy was with Liskeard so he offered to lend them a hand – although the ref just thought he was off-side. Sam R stretched out in the tackle for an excellent score; Luke also played his best game of the season as did Jack M and Bradley with excellent defence, running and generally getting stuck in. Ryan did an excellent job at scrum half whilst Dominic had a good all round game, although nearly pulled up by the ref for diving over the line when scoring!

Training this Friday at 6pm before our first tough match of the season against Launceston, who you will remember we had a tight draw with last season.

Again thanks to all parents for their excellent support at both the Friday training session and at the match

REDS U7′s&8′s TRAVEL TO LISKEARD

REDRUTH U7′S & 8′S v LISKEARD.

REDRUTH U8′s 14 LISKEARD U8′s 5

Despite the weather and the long journey, 12 players turned up at Lux Park looking for their first win of the season. The boys started brightly with everyone producing an excellent handling display despite the conditions. Early tries form Aden B, Liam C and Mathew S put the Reds into an early lead which was never to be surrendered. 3 further tries from Liam C, another for Mathew and 2 for George S saw the boys turn around with a 9 – 4 lead.

In the second half the Reds produced an awesome defensive performance with every player tagging their hearts out. 2 more tries from Mathew, 2 from Jack T and a great solo try from Jo M put the victory beyond doubt with a final score of 14 – 5.

What was most pleasing was the overall team display with everyone contributing in a game that could easily have gone either way. It was a great feeling to get that elusive first win and hopefully we can build on this in future weeks. Well done lads!!

REDRUTH U7′s 11 LISKEARD 5

What a miserable Sunday morning I thought to myself as we drove up to Liskeard, but this feeling wasn’t to last long. As we were warming up I could tell the boys were really focused and determined to keep up the fantastic start they have made to the season. The Reds won the toss and decided to start with the ball playing up the slope. Jordan S received the first pass and set off on one of his mazey runs side stepping all before him resulting in his first try of 5 in the first half. Good runs followed from every player with James H scoring his first try of the half to give us a 6 – 1 lead at half time.

The second half began after both sides had made a few half time substitutions and to be fair Liskeard really did come back at us mainly through the exploits of one Shaun Beaver whose father and I played many times against each other a few years ago when he played for Launceston. Jordan S continued his scoring run by adding another 4 tries to his tally along with James who ran three quarters of the field to score his second of the day, good job it was down hill James !!

Well done to Jordan for scoring 9 tries, I can’t remember that being done before, but to his defence he doesn’t receive that many starting passes, he just always seems to be there when a player has been tagged to take it on again.

A great allround team display, I don’t think one ball was dropped which was great considering the conditions, Well done all !!

Launceston at home on Sunday, I believe they to have big numbers so we will probably end up playing three matches to give everyone a game.

Can I remind everyone we are collecting a match fee of 50p per game.

Chris Sidwell.

The clocks have changed ! and so did the weather, on a wet Sunday morning the Reds played host to what turn out to be a much improved Liskeard side.

The Reds taking their time before they opened the scoring in very slippery conditions. The rest of the first half was not inspiring especially when Liskeard got an interception an scored.

The Second half saw the Reds get more on top of the game, but again after taking to long to play the ball Liskeard turned it over and made an excellent run to score.

The Reds though were on top and came straight back to score again.
A galant Liskeard play well, but in the end were dominated by a strong Reds squad. The final score 53/12.

Thanks to Liskeard for coming down . Guess what? by the time we left it was drying up, a typical Sunday morning at the REC.

Redruth continued their winning sequence that stretches back to the beginning of the season with this convincing performance against an under strength Truro Colts side, winning by 38-12.

The young Reds organisation and power up front proved to much for the game visitors to overcome, as the home team monopolised the possesion and ran in 6 tries to the visitors 2.

Tries: Ben Jenkin, Peter Jenkin, Ashley Hosking, Josh Heath, Tom Duncan 2

Under 13′s Update

Posted under Under 13's by admin on Saturday 27 October 2007 at 12:00 am

Redruth U 13′s had a busy weekend a round robin with Camborne and Dorking on Saturday, followed by a trip to Liskeard on Sunday.

On Saturday Camborne and Dorking got the match underway with Dorking winning by three tries to nil. The Reds then played Camborne scoring seven tries against a competitive but tiring side. The final game was between Reds and Dorking who brought with them a large squad and a good sporting supporters, the Reds dominated possession but fell behind to two tries from the fast Dorking centre who outpaced the Reds defence. The Reds came back strongly and scored a try in the corner to finish the game 17-5 to Dorking. Considering the conditions there was some excellent rugby played by all three teams to entertain a good sized crowd. Thanks to Andy and the Camborne team for coming over and making the fixture and thanks to Dorking who were excellent both on and off the pitch. Thanks to Kevin for doing an excellent job of refereeing the games on Saturday.

On Sunday the team travelled to Liskeard to play in horrendous conditions on a sloping pitch, we had a bare minimum of players after injuries on Saturday and players away for half term holidays. The team played with real spirit to win 17-7,scoring three times against a big Liskeard team who were very competitive, especially in the pack.

Overall it was a good weekend and the boys look to have put the nightmare game at Penzance behind them.

Tries were scored on Saturday by Jake Rayment (2) Ryan Thomas,Adam Hanbidge, Kieran Trewin, Ollie Bryant, Harry Langley, Joe Mayes (Harry and Joes first tries for the Reds). Oliie converted two.
On Sunday tries were scored by Ryan Thomas (2) and Alex Burke, one conversion by Ollie.

A big thanks to all of our supporters for braving the weather over the weekend to cheer the team on.

Nigel
