The Colts first warm up game of the season saw a well-drilled and very competent Wellington College win by 26-5, with the home side’s sole score a second half try from Ashley Hoskin.
Whilst the first half saw almost total territory and possession from the visitors, this was Redruth’s first game of the season. Selecting a mix of 17s and 18s, and with a squad of 26 all used, Redruth found some shape and direction in the second period and deserved more than the scoreline suggested.
More from Jim Trinder to come.

COACHING HELP REQUIRED FOR 7′s & 8′s.
With the new Mini / Junior season starting on Sunday Sept.2nd I now find myself in charge of the Redruth Destroyers and Warriors. As we get going there could be as many as 25 children turning up on a Sunday morning to start or continue with their rugby careers.
If there are any ex-players or anyone with good rugby experience who would be interested in helping me out on a Sunday morning (hangovers acceptable!), i’m looking for 2 willing volunteers. We have a full fixture list for the coming season, including some half time games and the great trip to Bath RFC at the end.
(For anyone wanting to know when their child can start playing, it’s basically 6 years old and upwards)
I am also looking for any willing sponsors for the season, any money raised or donated will go towards kit for the kids, rain jackets, shirts, new balls, etc
So if you are interested in any of the above please contact me soon at ckjsidwell@aol.com or call me on 01209-219091 or 07870525863.
See you all soon,
Chris Sidwell.

Starting this week with our home game against Clifton on Saturday. A little bit disappointed with the outcome but I suppose we have to be happy with the 38 point win. Certain areas that were a problem at Exeter were better this week, but areas that were good at Exeter were not so good! It’s better to iron out these problems now, than start addressing them in 2 weeks time when the league season is underway.
Clifton didn’t offer too much in the way of attacking flair but defended quite well and made nuisances of themselves at the breakdown, an area that need to be marshalled better than it was. However, a good crowd turned out and hopefully went away suitably encouraged for the up and coming campaign that kicks off on September 2nd at Nuneaton.
England, well
A dramatic last second try and conversion saw visitors St Ives take the spoils in this full-blooded Cornish encounter, played before a good-sized crowd on a strangely Autumnal like Summer’s day.
The St Ives team sheet reflected ex-Reds flanker and Hakes Coach John Navin’s links to his former club with Ben Sidgwick, Julian Hosking, Matt Thomas and Dean Rainey all figuring for St Ives, who also gave a start to former Pirate and Bay centre Steve Evans.
With Reds prop Simon Lutey and St.Ives back row Louis Stevens both yellow carded after only 5 minutes for scrapping, the stage was sent for what turned out to be a very exciting game from which both camps will take heart and have plenty to work on before the season proper.
Redruth played with the very stiff breeze at their backs towards the town end but for all their hard work and territory it was St Ives who took the lead on their first proper attack when centre Josh Stevens touched down for Matt Thomas to convert.
Redruth, playing in the changed green strip, turned round at half time 7-0 down but came out for the second period with an intensity and drive to put points on the board. With Neil Corin keen to show his former team mates what they were missing, Simon Peters darted in after 52 minutes with the crucial conversion missed by Adam Hosking. Game On at 5-7 !
A penalty from Pengilly edged the Reds ahead 8-7 with 20 minutes to go and with the travelling support shouting for the Blues to rally, replacement Mike Crump converted a penalty to squeeze St Ives ahead 10-8.
Back came Redruth and after some pressure in the Band Hut corner it was Jason Pengilly who stretched over and added the conversion for a 15-10 lead with just 8 minutes to go.
St ives threw the kitchen sink at it in an attempt to get back in to the game, and with the clock ticking down the last few minutes were spent in the home side’s 22.
After a series of lineouts, and with referee Austin Chapman about to blow, St Ives winger Rob Rowe cut in under the posts to the whoops of delight from his team and followers. Crump’s conversion was a formality: 17-15 and no way back for Redruth as the final whistle blew.
John Navin, who did not bring himself on, was a happy man and looking forward to the Camborne game on Thursday. Centre Steve Evans commented on how happy he was with his side’s performance that augurs well for the season ahead.
For Redruth, it was a case of what might have been, but many of the recent Colts stepped up and will have learnt a great deal about senior rugby, and that can only be good for them and the future.
