DAVID PENBERTHY Tuesday 31st July

Sunday was a bit of a sad day with Matt Stearn leaving the area for a new life in Oz. Matt returned to the coaching team last year and his input and presence has been invaluable. I know Nigel and the players, and me of course, will miss him both as a coaching colleague and a friend and he is going to be a very hard act to replace. I

Appeal for Information – Percy and Thomas Albert Lidgey

Posted under Supporters News by admin on Sunday 29 July 2007 at 12:00 am

One of our supporters is trying to get some more information about her ancestors, Tom and Percy Lidgey. They were brothers who both played for Redruth. Tom played for Cornwall 9 times before he went to South Africa. He played for the Mines team in 1904. Percy got his cap in 1910 but was killed in the 1st World War.

Has anyone got any photos from 1898 to 1911?

Does anyone have any more information?

If so please forward to and we will forward on the information.

Josh Lewsey joins the Reds for training [Updated with Nigel Hambly's Comments]

Posted under Academy News by admin on Wednesday 25 July 2007 at 12:00 am

Josh Lewsey called in on training on Tuesday evening at Redruth School.

About 15 Academy boys joined the first team squad in warm and sunny conditions, as Josh chatted with players and watching spectators, signing autographs and posing for pictures.

Josh, aged 30, played at the Redruth ground some years ago for England A v France A, and has recently bought a home in the area, taking up surfing and loves the Cornwall way of life.
He returns to the England fold this weekend when the squad assemble at Bath to prepare for the pre-World cup Wales friendly.

He is currently in the midst of a rigorous fitness regime, and ran a 15 minute session at the end of the evening with the Academy and some first team members.

Craig Bonds commented how pleased he was to see Josh come along, ” It’s a thrill for the Academy boys to have someone of Josh’s stature come along, taking time out to encourage and share some skills with them.”

Hambly said: “It was real good of him to come last night and speak to the young lads. I think it was a bit of a shock for them to see him turn up.

“No one really knew he was coming so it was a bit of a shock to a lot of people. We were launching the Academy and the Academy boys were training with the senior squad last night so I asked him if he could come along, and he was more than happy to do so.

“He’s a smashing bloke, a real nice guy and it was good to get him there. “Hopefully when the season arrives he’s going to come along and do a few sessions with us.

“Nothing is set in stone but he seems like a very approachable sort of person, hopefully it might be the start of something we can take further in the future, but that’s speculation more than anything at the moment.”

On the subject of the side in general Hambly added “We’re pretty much settled now, I’ve got enough selection problems as it is!

“The lads are getting there now, they’re not too far away, obviously you always like to be fitter, faster and stronger, but I can’t fault the guys’ effort, they’ve been fantastic with everything we’ve asked them to do.”

It was also Matt Stearn’s final training session as Assistant Coach at Redruth. Emotional farewells were said as Matt now departs for pastures new in Australia, joining his wife who is already there, and leaving behind many fond memories as Head of PE at Redruth School, a position that Club Captain Craig Bonds has now filled.

Hambly said, “I’ll miss him massively, not just as a fellow coach, but also as a friend. He’s brought a massive amount to the squad and lot of our success has been down to him. I wish him all the best with his new life in Australia and so does everyone else at the club.”

“There are no plans to get someone else in at the moment,” said Hambly. To replace Matt would be pretty much impossible. A few of the players will step up and do more coaching.

I was very sad to read of the death of former London Irish full back Jarrod Cunningham. He had been suffering from Motor Neurone Disease for about 5 years and fought bravely against it. In his playing days he was a very accomplished player and missed out to Andrew Mehrtens on All Black selection. He was highly respected in rugby circles and formed the Jarrod Cunningham Trust to research his illness

After writing my notes yesterday lunch time, hurriedly if I’m honest!!, I omitted to say congratulations to Trewirgie Junior School on winning the National Tag Festival last week. I know a number of our Minis play in this side and their coach, and teacher of course, Dave Williams is assisted by our own Mini/Junior coaches Phil Olds and Adrian Rutter. I know how passionate Dave Williams is about his rugby and he spends an enormous amount of his time working with the kids at the school improving their skills. My own kids both went to Trewirgie School and I know first hand how proud the school are of their achievements. Well done to all concerned there and I look forward to seeing you compete in this years half time competition at the club.

Also I mad a big “cock up” on my statement about Darren Jacques. Darren is about to start his 4th season with the club and not his 3rd, many apologies for this
