NIGEL HAMBLY Interview Western Morning News – Mark Stevens

Posted under Coaches' Notes by admin on Monday 28 May 2007 at 12:00 am

REDRUTH Coach Nigel Hambly believes the capture of Lewis Vinnicombe from the Cornish Pirates will help make up for losing record points-scorer Mike Hook to National League One side Pertemps Bees.

As well as welcoming back Vinnicombe, the Reds have also signed second-row forward Keith Larrard from Welsh Premiership club Bedwas as they strengthen their ranks ahead of the 2007/08 National Two season, which starts in September.

Hambly now hopes that the new recruits will help them reach their goal of promotion to Division One.

“That’s the plan, that’s one of our aims, whether it happens this season or next season, we’ll wait and see.” he said. “I’m enjoying the break but it’s coming together. It will be very tough though, there’s a lot of good signings being made in Division Two.

“Word on the street is that two or three clubs, at least, are going to really bang some money into it. But we’ve got a really good team spirit and team ethic and the boys play for each other.

“We’ve also got local business people like John Bealing and his partner Dave Powell sponsoring Lewis and it really helps us to have people like that sponsoring our players.”

“I don’t think we’ll be too far off. But promotion and things like that are for the press to talk about.”

The Recreation Ground faithful will welcome the return of Vinnicombe, who Hambly believes will make an already formidable back division even stronger.

Hambly said: “I saw him play a few times at the Pirates and I thought he looked a capable Division One player, but I think him moving back to Redruth is more a step sideways than a move backwards.

“I know people will say he’s moving down a level, but he comes here to us to play for a side in good form. He’ll definitely add some firepower to our back line which looks pretty good at the moment.”

“Lewis is a local boy, he grew up with us, learned his rugby with us and he felt his move to the Pirates was the right one at the time, but he didn’t really get the lucky breaks that you need sometimes when you move to a bigger club.”

Unfortunately for the Reds, fly-half Hook has decided that now is the time for him to take a chance, and he has accepted a contract with Pertemps Bees. Hook’s decision leaves Hambly and director of rugby Dave Penberthy with a difficult slot to fill.

Hambly said: “We’re seriously looking for a ten now with the news that Mike Hook is leaving us for Pertemps and that leaves us with a space to fill.

“I’m pretty confident we’ll get a decent calibre of player and hopefully he’ll fit into his shoes. Admittedly, those are quite big shoes to fill.”

“Mike had a decent season for us, he kicked his goals well and as the season went on he got better and better, but these things happen. We’ve got two or three leads on people that we’re looking at, so hopefully in the next couple of weeks we’ll announce another signing.”

The arrival 6’8 Larrard is, therefore a timely lift for Redruth. Penberthy said: “Keith has moved to the area and chose to approach us about joining. Obviously we hope he enjoys his rugby with us and I am sure he will be another valuable asset to the squad.”

DINNER DANCE REPORT

Posted under Events and Social News by admin on Monday 28 May 2007 at 12:00 am

Redruth Rugby’s Dinner & Dance was held on Friday at the Best Western Falmouth Beach Resort Hotel.

The Bar at the Club was open from 5pm to cater for early arrivals waiting for the coach – re-opening at 1pm to sate thirsts of the stragglers on the coach’s return !

It was a new venue for us, but a good and fun atmosphere was evident throughout the whole night, the highlight of which was definitely ” The Captain’s Speech ” from Craig Bonds.

Space and the threat of litigation does not allow everything to be printed here, but Craig clearly spent some time preparing his Powerpoint Presentation….taking a wide selection of photos from the season and adding some suitable captions.

Whilst some must remain within the confines of the First Aid room and as great memories for those present, a selection of Craig’s handywork follows – I hope those featured take this with grace !

The main awards went to:

DAVID PENBERTHY – New signing and Mike Hook

Posted under Director's Commentary by admin on Saturday 26 May 2007 at 12:00 am

A little late this week and that’s pretty much down to the fact that I enjoyed a weekend in London watching both European Rugby finals and tasted a pint or two of the sponsors finest!! To be honest, I went to the last European Final in London and it was ok but this one definitely surpassed that. I thought that last years final between Munster and Biarritz would take some beating but this one even went a long way to equalling it

COLTS GURU SIMON BLAKE HONOURED

Redruth Rugby is pleased and honoured to confirm that Simon Blake has been made a Life Member of the Club – proposed by David Penberthy and seconded by Derek Collins.

David Penberthy commented:

” I feel very privileged to be asked to make this nomination for a person who I have known for a very long time and have huge respect for. Hopefully it goes some way in recognising the massive contribution he has made to Redruth Rugby Football Club over the years.

Without him we would, undoubtedly, be languishing way below the level we are currently competing at.

His success during his reign as Head Coach of Redruth Colts has seen unprecedented success -

This season he has achieved the elusive

AGM UPDATE

Posted under News by admin on Saturday 19 May 2007 at 12:00 am

It was standing room only in the the Clubhouse on Thursday evening, May 17th, as members heard from key personnel reflecting on what has been an ultimately excellent season for all teams Under 7s to Senior and plans and aspirations for 2007-08.

President Derek Collins began with a list of extensive thank yous – and a heart-felt plea for some new blood to volunteer some of their time, an issue supported by Secretary Roger Watson in his annual report.

Derek also implored members to bring a friend next season – perhaps get them to join – a move which could double present membership numbers. There are some exciting Membership announcements due very shortly.

Probably the main theme of the evening reflected on the success of all 3 Colts teams, an unprecedented and outstanding achievement in winning all 3 cup competitions as well as the small matter of a National Final.

David Penberthy, whose new title of Director of Rugby has now been formally adopted, was described as having ” Redruth in his veins ” by Roger, rather like a stick of Blackpool Rock. His efforts, not to say mileage, sleepless nights, Motorway services rendezvous, phone bill and overheated computer, were roundly cheered.

Wayne Collins, one of the main driving forces in the Tolgus move, explained to members that a professional and experienced team have made great progress behind the scenes in aiming to put together the right Planning Applications for both the new and present grounds. Involving the whole Community and Redruth School in particular is paramount to realise this splendid and unparallelled facility for Redruth and Cornwall.

A Joint Mission statement will be published shortly as consultations ( costing tens of thousands of

REDS SUPPORTER OF THE YEAR – GEOFF SINCLAIR

Posted under Supporters News by admin on Friday 18 May 2007 at 12:00 am

This prestigious award was presented to Mr Geoff Sinclair by David Penberthy, a local garage owner and passionate Supporter for a number of years.

Geoff made 10 day trips to away games plus 2 stop-overs at Cambridge and Halifax. But Geoff didn’t just ” go ” – he drove his car with passengers or took the wheel at the old faithful minibus, including leaving Cornwall at 5.30am ( and I remember it well ) to head for Bradford, Harrogate, Barking and Manchester.

Such committment in time and effort was tremendous, noted and appreciated by the Players and Coaches—-and already we are booked for Nuneaton on September 1st !!!

Well done Geoff, richly deserved, and the Bridgwater Transport Caff breakfasts aren’t bad, are they ?

If there is anyone who YOU believe would be a worthy successor to Geoff next year, please let us know.

COLTS PRESENTATIONS

Posted under Colts News by admin on Saturday 12 May 2007 at 12:00 am

What a week it’s been for the Colts, starting with the highs and lows of Monday at Northampton to the fun and games of the Presentations and Awards at the Club on Thursday.

Head Coach Nigel Hambly and Club President Derek Collins were on hand to announce and present the trophies.

As Nigel commented, it wasn’t so much about the result on Monday as getting there, a massive achievemnt in itself. Bedford proved a hurdle too far, but the experience gained at a magnificent stadium against a very good and big team will prove invaluable.

Nigel added that for the under-19s now stepping up to the Senior squad can look to Paul Teixeira, Ben Fox and Dan Job, who all made the First Team squad this year and can join in what could be a very exciting season next year.

Thanks were made in particular to all Mums and Dads and Sponsors – without you, where would we be ??? !!!

The main awards were presented to:

U17 Player of the year – Jack Williams

U18 Player of the year – Nick Simmons

U19 Player of the year – Ben Taberer

Colts Clubman of the year – Captain Scott Jenkin

Players Player of the season – Ben Fox

Colt of the year – Josh Morgan

Colts ” Magic Moment ” award – Adam ‘The Boss Man’ Hosking.

Thanks to everyone who packed the Clubhouse, and a reminder it’s the Club AGM next Thursday.
