COLTS UPDATE Jim Trinder Monday April 23rd 2007

Posted under Colts News by admin on Tuesday 24 April 2007 at 12:00 am

We are a very lucky club at the moment, with every week bringing a Cup Final. Yesterday it was the turn of the Under 18 Colts to bring home the cup, this cup being the ‘main colts cup in the County’, the cup that Redruth colts have won on eighteen previous occasions including seven out of the last nine years now eight in ten years.

The boys delivered the greatly sought after result.

There is no doubt that at the start of the season that this was always the colts number one priority – so a fantastic job done by Under 18s captain Nick Simmons and the rest of the squad. (See separate report by David Thomas with photos).

The team of course celebrated into the night with ice cream at Simons house !!!

There is training again tonight, with the U19 Cornwall Merit Table final on Saturday 3pm against Launceston at Polson Bridge. A win at Launceston would give the Reds all the county cups from Under 15s to the senior Cornwall cup. No pressure then boys!!!

The preparations for the national cup final are underway. We have booked a hotel and coach, we will be staying at the Holiday Inn Express M1 Junction 15 01604 432800.

If any supporters want to book, please note we will be staying on both Sunday and Monday nights.

We should be able to tell you about a supporters coach later this week, hopefully tomorrow!

Just one more thing – the Club have granted the Colts a collection on Saturday. So please give generously.

U’12 versus Dorchester

Dorchester Under 12′s tour

Redruth entertained Dorchester on Saturday as part of their Pirates tour to Cornwall. The game was played on a rock hard pitch, but that did not stop both sides from giving 100% effort and commitment.

The game was played over 3 twenty minute periods, expertly refereed by Mr Phil Olds(guru and wise sage to all age groups) who kept the game flowing and was quite sprightly himself considering the heat!!!!!!

With both teams starting with their best line ups, the game was even, with Redruth having plenty of the ball, the Dorchester defence was eventually breached after a good backs move, the ball going out to Chris Beezley on the wing who touched down in the corner, Daniel Eathorne converted. Just before the first break Kieran Trewin finished off an excellent forwards try to make it 12-0.

The second period started with changes by both sides,Redruth putting on three under 11′s, who after their nerves had settled, gave an excellent account of themselves and slotted into the team well. The Reds third try was a great solo effort by Dirk Moodie who caught a Dorchester clearance on the halfway line and jinked his way through the whole defence to score, to make it 17-0.

Dorchester did not give up and got a fully deserved try after they pounced on a loose ball close to the Reds line and drove over to score, they converted to make it 17-7 at the end of the second period.

The final period went the same way as the others, with the Reds having most of the ball, but some excellent Dorchester defence keeping them at bay, eventually they broke through with Ryan Thomas sprinting away to score, Daniel Eathorne converted to make the final score 24-7. During the 3rd period, play was stopped when the Dorchester tour leader cruelly blew his whistle and all the boys on the pitch had to blow a balloon up and stick it on their head, considering the heat and the boys exhaustion , we hope MARTYN PEEL got his just rewards over the weekend..

Thanks to all the Dorchester tour officials and their team for giving us all a good afternoon on the pitch and some great entertainment in the bar afterwards. We hope the rest of the tour went well and that we can return the fixture in the not too distant future.

Well done to the whole team for an excellent game, played with great sportsmanship and passion. Also thanks to the three under 11 players for their hard work.

Thanks to Phil Olds for referring.

We are away at our last Bath Festival next weekend, so fingers crossed it’s a good one.

Redruth Under-18s came through a fragemented stop-start game at Hayle, beating Penryn 16-9 in their Final to set up a possible clean sweep of older age groups for the Redruth Club.

A good sized crowd saw fly-half Brett Rule land 3 good penalties and back-row Josh heath dive over for a first-half try, also converted by Rule.

Penryn kept themselves in the game, but will rue 3 straightforward penalty misses early on.

Under-17s Captain James Hitchens was named Man of the Match as a jubilant squad greeted the final whistle with joy. Captain Nick Simmons gleefully accepted the trophy.

REDRUTH DEVELOPMENT XV 10 EXETER UNITED 57

In the final Tamar League clash of the 2006-07 season, Exeter ran out convincing winners over a very young and largely inexperienced Redruth side.

On a hard pitch with dust flying everywhere, Exeter racked up 3 tries in the first 15 minutes, and with the home side playing catch up never looked like being caught.

Redruth’s youngsters found their feet in the second period, contested more up front, but the bigger and pacier Exeter backs pulled away to run in 9 tries in total.

Check out the Gallery for more photos of this game.
