COLTS UPDATE Jim Trinder March 26th 2007

Posted under Colts News by admin on Tuesday 27 March 2007 at 12:00 am

Unfortunately Saturdays Colts game at home to Devonport services was cancelled at about 1pm, as the Plymouth side could not get enough players to travel.

However our visitors were able to put a side out against the Development side – See David’s comments in his column.

This meant a number of the Colts did get a game in this match and in the junior development side at Redruth Albany.

With the confirmation of 2 semi final dates for Redruth Colts the season is now entering a critical stage where the success of the season will be decided. All very exciting but tense for everyone.

This Saturday Redruth U18s are at home to Penzance & Newlyn in the semi final of the Cornwall Cup – kick off will be at 1.30pm and we will be counting on strong home support to push them into the final and a chance to defend their title as County champions.

Also confirmation of the Semi final of the National Colts cup at home to Bishops Stortford, a side with several players attached to Saracens academy, will be played on Sunday the 15th April with a 1pm kick off. This follows a ruling by the East Midlands RFU, organisers of the competition.

Up and coming next week – Wednesday 4th April 7.45 at Hayle, we have our first opportunity to win something this season with the U17s final, against a very good Perranporth side.

Please come and support the young colts in this very important game.

Thanks all and see you next week.

Jim Trinder

Well to start this week, I hope nobody took any notice of my prediction for the final of the EDF Cup

Redruth U12′s versus Helston

Posted under Under 12's by admin on Monday 26 March 2007 at 12:00 am

Helston 0 – 0 Redruth 40 -21

The U12′s bounced back from a poor County Festival to convincingly beat Helston on Sunday. Tries from Ryan Thomas, Jake Rament(2) Kieran Trewin, Kieran Young and Dan Eathorne with conversions by Steve Trenoweth, Ollie Bryant, Dan Eathorne and Dirk Moodie gave the Reds a convincing first game win 40 -0.

The squad was shuffled around in the second game but the Reds still came out on top 21 -0, with tries by Dan Eathorne, Ollie Bryant and Kieran Trewin and conversions by Ollie,Ryan and Dan.

Well done to all the squad on a good response to last week, hopefully we can carry this into the Hayle Festival next week.

Redruth U7′s versus Helston

Redruth Destroyers U7′s 8 Helston U7′s 8

Firstly, well done to all the mums & dads who remembered to set their clocks correctly and turn up on time this Sunday.
After a bit of confusion of where we and the under 8′s were playing, we got off to a slow start being 2 tries down in a matter of minutes, but we soon hit back, playing some really good rugby with all the boys involved we scored a few cracking tries. It made such a difference when running with the ball, we managed to stop short of the touchline and cut back in field enabling play to continue.

Helston played their part well, their young girls really showed us how to run with determination, and they seemed to score everytime we scored, maybe we need to concentrate harder after we score!
After an entertaining second half the ref blew his whistle with the scores even at eight all, a fitting end to a well contested match. Well done to Jack M. who played his best game to date scoring 2 really good tries, Liam was back to his best scoring 2 tries and Jordan weighed in with 4 tries, a good team effort !!

This week I believe is Hayle Festival, unfortunately Jordan and I won’t be there as I have tickets to see Leicester play Stade Francais.
Please make note in your diaries that on the 14th April the Under 7′s will be playing Truro U7′s at half time of the Redruth v Bradford & Bingley match.

More to follow,
Chris.

U14′s Plate and Cup Finals Held at Redruth

Posted under Under 14's by admin on Monday 26 March 2007 at 12:00 am

Having lost out in the semi finals(Cup), Redruth hosted the U14′s Plate and Cup final at the Recreation ground.

First up saw a great battle between Camborne and Bude. Camborne piped this match by 5 tries to 3 (full score not known). Bude felt ‘robbed’ as they claimed the ref played a short second half, but in all (independant) honesty, Camborne did just make their opportunities pay off. Bude learnt, a little to late that the pick and drive game found a weakness in the Camborne defence.

Impressive for both side were their goal kickers, who both slotted long range conversions, to make this one great game.

As an independant spectator I felt young Kevin William had a great game with the whistle, he let the game flow and playedthe advantage rule well. It is a shame that a ‘few parents-supporters’ feel they have to make snippy remarks, when they dont have the bottle to try being a match offical themeselves….maybe it’s time for all clubs to dust off the parent code of conduct?

Game two was between age group reigning champs Penzance and Newlyn versus St Ives. I mentioned recently that St Ives are again becoming a force in Cornish rugby. I did not see this game but was informed that Penzance won the cup after another cracking game. Hopefully I will get a match report later.

Well done to all the players who took part yesterday and to Bruce Arnot, Phil OLds, Nigel Eathorne and the bar/kitchen staff at Redruth who helped make sure the day ran smoothly.

Under 12′s County Festival

Posted under Under 12's by admin on Saturday 24 March 2007 at 12:00 am

Redruth were runners up at Penzance on Sunday, losing in the final to Penzance, who retained their trophy for the 4th year in succession.

Due to the date being changed some teams were unavailable and only 5 teams competed. The competition was a round robin with all teams playing each other and the top 2 competing for the cup in the final.

First up for the reds were local rivals Camborne, with a below par reds hanging on by just 2tries to 1. Their form did not improve in the next game against Newquay, but once again we came away with a win by 1 try to nil. Next up was Penzance who beat us 5 tries to nil, which meant we had to get a draw against Launceston. After going behind to a early try, the reds showed a glimpse of their normal game to equalize and make the final.

In the final the reds couldn’t raise their game and were well beaten by a superbly well drilled, disciplined and passionate side, something that for some unknown reason we lacked on the day.

Thanks to all the parents who came and supported, especially the mums who stood out in the cold on mothers day. Also thanks to Penzance for hosting the festival on such short notice, and making us all very welcome, and well done to Martin and his team on retaining the cup again.

Hopefully the team can find the passion and desire that was missing on Sunday, and compete well at Hayle & Bath festivals, as Andy and I havent got any hair left to pull out and Phils is going grey

Under 16′s Struggle against Camborne in the Semi Final of the County Championship.

Posted under Under 16's by admin on Thursday 22 March 2007 at 12:00 am

Semi Final

Wednesday 21st March

Camvborne U’16′s 3 – Redruth U’16′s 15

A resurgent Camborne, gave Redruth one of their hardest matches of the season.

Although Redruth won the set piece scrums, Camborne proved better in the rucks, mauls and line-outs.

Redruth dominated territory in the first half but the Camborne defence held.

Finishing the half at 0-0. A choice by Redruth to run a penalty near the line, rather than kick for points, proved wrong as nothing was gained.

In the second half, Matt Bennett missed a penalty for Camborne before Tom Booth crossed the line for Redruth, with an unconverted try. A penalty kick by Richard Keverne and an unconverted try by Lee Isaacs completed the Redruth score with Matt Bennett slotting a penalty for Camborne.

This match would have made a great final. A big thanks to all associated with Camborne, who have picked up their skills thanks to dedicated coaching.

LAUNCESTON 2nds 29 REDRUTH DEVELOPMENT XV 31

Posted under Match Reports by admin on Thursday 22 March 2007 at 12:00 am

A sensational last second try from Colt Nick Simmons gave the development side a win at Polson Bridge last night. 10-0 up after just 10 minutes following tries from Sam Brown and Mark Lea…we went 17-0 up with a try by Mark Lea and a conversion by Scott Martin. Launceston made it 17-5 at half time. Redruth then edged in front with Scott Martin kicking 3 penalties but CAB’s took the lead 29 -26 with about 5 minutes remaining…Nick then scored his try but Ed Carne missed the conversion….

The game was played in great spirit, was entertaining to watch especially with Neil Clark making his Launceston debut.

It was also a welcome sight to see Richard Carroll back from injury and in a red shirt once again.

Redruth: Ed Carne, Paul Texeira, Simon Peters, Matt Thomas, Mark Lea, Scott Martin, Sam Brown, Neil Douch, Sam Harrison, Craig Williams, Harry Somers, Richard Carroll, Ben Fox, Josh Morgan, Ryan Spargo.

Replacements: Marc Britton, Adam Keverne, Nick Simmons, Ashley Morcom, Simon Lutey, John Martin, Adam Hosking, Jason Pengilly, Jim Harvey, Mark Phillips, Matt Gidlow, (and there may have been more – please let me know!)
