With thanks to Alan Roberts Garage Portreath for the shorts and Your Move Redruth for the tops.

The Team were pictured before the game against Liskeard -Looe which they drew 7-7 with our try scored by Will Whitworth.

The second game ended in a comfortable victory for Liskeard but the team has changed during this season with several new players and we now have a large squad with lots of competition for places.

COLTS WEEKLY UPDATE Jim Trinder 29th January 2007

Posted under Colts News by admin on Tuesday 30 January 2007 at 12:00 am

A tough weekend for the colts, a good victory over Camborne, but a worrying defeat for the Under 18s home to Penryn. We are suffering from injury and availability of several of the key under 18 players and will need to get them right for the knock out stages of the competition if we are to retain this cup.

What a difference for club members and spectators this season as opposed to last season.
There were three matches at the club on Saturday which must have benefited the club financially and given the supporters and players a lift.

The evening saw a disco in the Main Bar hosted by the colts – which involved drink, music and dressing up.
I will see if there are some pictures to put on the site.

This coming weekend we will be looking fo a major improvement by the side when we visit Launceston in the under 18 Cornwall cup.

Redruth under 18s 5 Penryn under 18s 7

Cup holders Redruth Colts suffered a rare home defeat in the Cornwall under 18s cup going down to a spirited Penryn side by 7 points to 5 in this group stage match.

On a day when they could hardly do anything right the Reds were still in a posistion to win the tie with a last minute penalty attempt. However, that would have been rough justice on a Penryn side who were dominant throughout the afternoon. The one bright spot for the home side being a fine solo try for scrum half Nick Simmons who ran from 60 metres beating several players before touching down.

Redruth Colts 31 Camborne Colts 10

Redruth secured a place in the Cornwall under 19 merit table final after a convincing victory over their near neighbours. The Reds were dominant throughout the match and could have scored a bigger victory but for a little over elaboration by the forwards who were determined to enjoy the day.

Scorers for Redruth:

Russell May 2

Ben Fox

Ben Taberer

Ben Greening

Adam Hosking 3 conversions.

Redruth 42 & 0 Liskeard

And 36-5

Redruth got back to winning ways on Sunday with two wins against Liskeard. The team was on top form from the start, with some excellent rucking and mauling, finished off with some excellent back play. Liskeard never gave up and played some good rugby themselves, but the Reds were just too good on the day. In the first game tries were scored by Dirk Moodie, Ollie Bryant,Kieran Young,Ryan Thomas(2) and Boran Dickson. Converted by Steve Trenoweth and Ollie.

In the second game there were tries for Ollie Bryant,Kieran Young,George Currie, Kieran Trewin and an excellent debut try for Liam Andrew with conversions by Steve, Boran and Liam.

It was a good effort by the whole squad, which showed our strength in depth. We look forward to Newquay at home next week.

Samurai’s v Truro at the Pirates who were playing Doncaster at Camborne

What a title.

An extra treat for The Samurais this week who were invited to play during half-time at The Cornish Pirates v Doncaster game. Our oponents were Truro.

Not a lot I can say about the game to be honest. We played very well and Truro played even better. Generally we passed well, supported well and were strong on the ball. It was probably just a few bad individual decisions that let us down. Truro however were on fire! They did everything right, and helped along by a few inspired full pitch runs came out winners scoring 5 tries to our 4.

A special note of thanks to Jack Hitchens who captained the side despite being pretty unwell. He even managed to score a try!

Thanks to Phil Westren at The Pirates for the invite, Deano and James for their help, and all of the parents who came along in support. Thanks as well to our players. Hard luck – Truro were good, but we will be playing them at a half-time fixture in Redruth in the near future where I

UNDER 16′S v CAMBORNE

Posted under Under 16's by admin on Monday 29 January 2007 at 12:00 am

On an exellent day for running Rugby, Redruth were slow to get into their stride, giving away a lot of unnecessary penalties in the first half. A depleted Camborne team (injuries and No-Show players) started well, showing the squad that turned up were not going to lie down with their legs in the air. Aaron Hancock made a good return for the Reds in his first full game this season. As the first half progressed Redruth started to click, and finished the first half 26 points up.

The Reds started the second half well, playing more as a team, saw them score another 24 points, without reply
SCORERS ; James Williams, Lee Isaacs, Richard Kevern, Daniel Dunstan all scoring one try each. A Lewarne and S Newman two tries each, with five conversions by R Kevern.

For the Reds Sam Newman and Adam Lewarne were outstanding, the Reds coaches are more than happy with the progression of skill being taken from the training ground.

All credit to Camborne for their effort making a hard game for the Reds. All wish a speedy recovery to James (Camborne Full Back) who suffered collar bone damage, it looks likely he will be out for 6 weeks.

Finally a word of thanks to the Pirates who played Doncaster at the Rec yesterday. After our match we were all invited to see the match as guests of the Pirates, a tough match with a fair result going to the Pirates.

David Penberthy’s Weekly Column Monday January 29th 2007

Posted under Director's Commentary by admin on Monday 29 January 2007 at 12:00 am

It was vitally important that we bounced back this week following our pretty dismal performance against Lydney in the EDF Trophy. Going into Saturday’s game we were under no illusions of how hard a task was at hand. Cambridge have not had the best of records away from home, but had only lost twice at home to Stourbridge and Cornish All Blacks. They were confident and included a number of current and former Cambridge Blues. The scoreline, I believe, totally reflects the game, yes we made a number of unforced errors in the 1st half that kept them in touch, but come the 2nd half everything came good and we looked very impressive, so much so that Cambridge said we were the best side to have played there this year.

Their report on their website was pleasing to read, but just a couple of points to be made known

MARK BRIGHT SIGNS ON AGAIN FOR THE REDS

Posted under Player News by admin on Wednesday 24 January 2007 at 12:00 am

Redruth Rugby’s No 8 Mark Bright has just agreed a new 2 year deal that will see him remain with the Reds until the end of the 2008/2009 season.

Redruth Rugby Manager David Penberthy said that he was delighted that Mark had agreed to stay and that it had brought an end to a series of negotiations that had been ongoing since early December.

Penberthy said, “We were obviously very aware that Mark would attract a number of enquiries from National 1 and National 2 sides so it was vitally important that we got things sorted at an early stage. Mark is a quality player and his form and play has brought a real cutting edge to the team. Both Nigel and I were keen to keep Mark but we knew it would be tough if we allowed it to rumble on too long. Mark will return to New Zealand in May to see out his contract with Tasman Mako’s but will return in late September. Mark has settled well here with his wife Angela and young son Bailey and all are looking forward to settling more permanently in the area”.

Penberthy went to say that he was hopeful of being able to announce further re-signings in the very near future.
