DAVID PENBERTHY NEW YEAR MESSAGE

Posted under Director's Commentary by admin on Friday 29 December 2006 at 12:00 am

I hope everyone had a nice Christmas and are now recovering from the over indulgence in eating and drinking…….

Now that the disappointment has died down somewhat, I feel that I am in a better state to write a few lines

COLTS CHRISTMAS UPDATE Jim Trinder

Posted under Colts News by admin on Thursday 28 December 2006 at 12:00 am

The Colts have suffered from too much partying over the Christmas, and will need to get their heads down to some serious training over the New Year period. County Cup games are looming thick and fast as well as a 4th round National Under 19 Cup tie on the 14th Jan.

On a lighter note results over the period have been positive without being exciting: the Coltss ran out good winners in the U19 merit table game at Launceston on Saturday and managed a win in a close encounter with old adversaries and good neighbours Camborne on Boxing Day morning.

Several Colts were involved with the Boxing day games against the cherry and whites, one making his debut for the Baa Baa’s and scoring, well done Adam Harris.

(Sorry Simon, Adam is fit and well).

It was also great to run into and have playing a number of ex colts home for the festivties from all over the country and beyond. Even a well tanned Ben Menear who turned out for the Baa Baa’s back from Barbados??

Thanks to everyone who supported the Colts collection, many of the Launceston sorry CAB supporters gave willingly and generously at the match on Saturday. We collected

REDRUTH 19 CAMBORNE 10

Posted under Match Reports by admin on Wednesday 27 December 2006 at 12:00 am

A Redruth Development XV beat Camborne by 19 points to 10 in the annual and traditional Boxing Day encounter.

In a game that perhaps only really came to life in the last quarter, Redruth can thank the boot of home for Christmas fly-half Tom Glover, who kicked 4 good penalties and a very well-struck conversion of Ed Carnes’s try.

For Camborne, young replacement Cameron Bone and old stager but still very capable Kevin Penrose touched down.

The crowd of about 1200 were very well entertained, and after the game captain Neil Douch presented the match ball to Ann Frickers, grandmother of Reds second row Stuart Crew, and 91 years young. Our thanks and best wishes to her.

Earlier in the day, Redruth’s Baa-baas were beaten at Camborne but the Under-19 Colts beat their Camborne counterparts by 20 points to 15.

Samurai’s v The Tigers

Posted under Under 8's by admin on Tuesday 26 December 2006 at 12:00 am

What a great performance by the Samurais on Saturday in front of a large and supportive crowd.

The match was real end to end stuff with both sides providing their share of the entertainment. The Samurais showed real character in attack and their tagging was impressive as well. Despite losing possesion a couple of times, their flare shone through with the final score being Samurais 5 to the Tigers 4.

Samurais Tries : Dominic Hill, Dominic Goodwin, Henry Eddy, Connor Gilbert, Jack Hitchens

Many positive comments were also passing round the crowd about how well the kids did and that they represented their clubs excellently. Minis half time games are set to be a permanent fixture at Redruth from february onwards as a direct result so there is plenty more to come.

Thanks to Stewart and The Tigers for playing their part. I believe a re-match is scheduled for the Reds home game in February so look out for that.

Thanks also to Dave P and the Reds for giving the kids a great day. Much appreciated.

Next Fixture 7th January. Liskeard AT HOME. See you there.

CABS deservedly won the local derby at Redruth on Saturday by virtue of taking all the chances that came their way and a hugely disciplined defensive performance. The CABS backs (notable Steve Perry and Sam Young)were able to pick holes in the Reds drift defence, and with the excellent running lines of the portly duo Andy Birkett and Ryan Westren fashioned two similar tries out wide in the first period, both of which Young converted expertly. Mike Hook had one success with the boot in the first half but both he and young missed very kickable penalties in that period. CABS had the nudge on in the scrums but as the game wore on, the Reds increasingly dominated the lineout, and it was their inability to win the key lineouts in the CABS 22 that really hurt them, as they had proved on a number of occasions that in their rolling maul they had a potent weapon.

Offensively, the Reds were up against a variation of the blitzing, up and in defence from the CABS. This forced Hook to send inside centre PJ Gidlow up the 10/12 channel far more than he would have wished and the CABS back row were ready and waiting for him on every occasion. The introduction of Richard Carroll certainly gave the Reds more impact in the second period, but the CABS had also done their homework on Mark Bright and the Reds key player did not have the impact on this match that he has had in others, CABS stripping him of the ball on a couple of occasions. Though Hook did miss a couple of penalties in the second half, he did land two to narrow the gap. This and a second yellow for Nick Burnett (he had to go for he made no attempt to get out of the way on the floor just yards from his own line) made for a tense last 15 minutes but the CABS worked overtime defensively and pinched key Reds ball in contact deep inside their 22 on a couple of occasions late on, one steal leading to a superb crossfield clearing kick by Birkett taking play inside the Reds 22. The Reds looked gutted on the final whistle but it is fair to say the more clinical side won on the day.

Both sides and their officials mixed for hours in the bar after the game, and it was great for me to meet so many new faces. Never let the RFU try and corral senior Cornish clubs into one entity in pursuit of a franchise system, for this match and its aftermath proved that the best club rugby is alive and well and operating in Cornwall!

Thanks to Dickon and the Trelawnys Army website for this.

REDRUTH 9 CORNISH ALL BLACKS 14

Posted under Match Reports by admin on Monday 25 December 2006 at 12:00 am

Almost, but not quite. Good, but not quite good enough. That may sum up Redruth’s performances in the past two weeks against the League’s top two sides, narrow defeats by a total of 9 points, two bonus points gained, and which show how much the Reds have improved since the dark days of September.

Head coach Nigel Hambly has this message for supporters:

” Keep the faith and please stay behind and support the players. We are improving, and would all have settled for this ( mid – table ) position at the start of the season. We have the EDF Cup to look forward to, a good number of home games, plenty of rugby to play, and a top 6 finish will be a job well done. Teams like Launceston have different goals to ourselves, so keep believing, we won’t let you down, we have a good bunch of players and we are already looking forward to going up to Harrogate on January 6th and putting in a good performance there. “

Captain Craig Bonds concurs.

” The supporters have been fantastic in 2006. To be captain of Redruth, a team I’ve grown up with since I was a boy, and to run out in front of a crowd with so much atmosphere as today ( Launceston at home ) makes the hairs on the back of your neck stand up. It’s a privilege. We owe the fans a big thank you, not just for the great support at home but for those travelling the many miles away too. “

As for the game itself on Saturday, played under slate grey Cornish skies, Launceston dominated the first period, fully deserving their half time lead of 14 – 3, whilst the second half saw the Reds turn the screw in the hunt for that elusive score to draw level. Fair play to the All Blacks, their defence held firm and in Steve Perry had the Man of the Match ( or ” different gravy ” as Chris Brown called him ) and in Andy Birkett a wise head and phenomenal boot, gaining many yards from hand often from some acute touch line angles.

However, Launceston have now won three of the four encounters between the two sides played in 2006, and drawn the other, and if the all Blacks do make it up this year, we wonder where the Reds Christmas ” derby ” will be this time next year ?

In a pulsating finish to a ferocious Cornish derby game Redruth were unable to crack the All Blacks who were down to 14 men for the final quarter after a red card for Nick Burnett.

The visitors dominated the first half leading 14-3 at the interval, Redruth raised their game in the second period but it was not enough, Reds fans will reflect on two penalty misses by top scorer Mike Hook but overall the visitors were worthy winners on the day, a crucial win in their quest for the second promotion place to national one.

In the opening minute Referee Alan Biggs penalised Marc Sweeney for a late check on Paul Teixeira but Hook

NEW SCRUM LAW

Posted under News by admin on Saturday 23 December 2006 at 12:00 am

Law changes

The IRB has announced that there will be a major change to the scrummage laws with effect from 1st January 2007.

The engagement sequence used in junior rugby will be used at all levels. This has four phases controlled by the referee :

1 – crouch ie take up the scrummaging position

2 – touch ie each prop has to put one hand on his opponents shoulder

3 – hold the touching position

4 – engage

The intention is to stop sides charging in from a distance and to make it easier for the referee to ensure that the front rows’ body positions are correct.
