Our first visit to Bradford & Bingley and what a reception we had! If travelling to Doncaster on Friday night in horrendous driving conditions was not enough, we were greeted on our approach to the town by a youngster throwing eggs at our bus, one hitting the windscreen bang in the driver’s line of sight! John, our driver, was startled to say the least but did not flinch in his control of the bus. Apparently this is a welcome reserved for visiting football fans and as Bradford City were at home that day the welcoming youngster obviously thought we were travelling supporters, the fact that we had a bloody great sign in the front of the bus saying “Redruth Rugby Football Club” obviously didn’t register with the egg thrower!!

On a bright but soggy Saturday afternoon in West Yorkshire, Redruth picked up from where they left off against Manchester to continue the rich vein of form that sees them remain unbeaten since the thumping at Blackheath at the end of September.

THE REDS, NATHAN PEDLEY AND PETROC JAMES CELEBRATE 7 IN A ROW

A quiet and subdued crowd of maybe 300, including some supporters who had made the long trip up from Redruth at 5am in the morning, were rewarded with a spectacular opening to rival any that Reds supporters have seen over the years.

Redruth U18s 24 Truro U18s 15

A closely contested match ended with the home side just pulling away. Sam Bristow capped a good all round personal display with a hat trick of tries with Jack Williams adding the fourth and Ashley Hosking kicking two conversions. The Reds were very grateful to Alan Milner for stepping in to referee at the last minute as the ref for this match was called away at short notice to officiate in a merit table game.

Paignton Development XV 3 Redruth Colts 53

An unusual fixture for the Redruth Colts, but with the crisis in Colt rugby in Devon, Paignton have been unable to find fixtures for their under 19 players – so Redruth Colts, keen to play different opposistion, agreed to take on this development side consisting of under 19s to under 21s.

The young Reds rose to the challenge and produced some of their best rugby of the season so far to score nine tries. With some outstanding performances from Ben Fox and Josh Morgan in the forwards added to a superbdebut in the senior Colts side for under 17 Fly half Mark Jenkin ( 4 conversions ) and some good decision making and all around play.

REDRUTH UNDER 12′s V NEWQUAY

Redruth Under 12′s

Redruth 35 Newquay 0

Redruth got back on track with a comprehensive win over a very big Newquay team. On a good day for rugby the Reds ran the ball at every opportunity and after continuous pressure Ryan Thomas opened the scoring, Steve Trenoweth converted. Kieran Trewin touched down for the second with Ollie Bryant converting. The rest of the half was even with both sided having opportunities to score, H/T 14 -0.

The second half saw the Reds make numerous changes throughout, but they still dominated the forward exchanges, from a quick tap penalty Kieran Young charged over, Steve converted, he then finished off a good back move and scored to make it 28-0, Boran Dickson darted through the defence for the final try after some good forward pressure, Ollie converted to make the final score 35 -0.

A much improved performance by the whole squad, and we look forward to the local derby at Camborne next week. Thanks to Mike, Les and the Newquay team fro coming down and making the fixture. We look forward to the return in February.

REDRUTH UNDER 10

Posted under Under 10's by admin on Monday 20 November 2006 at 12:00 am

The Redruth under 10′s played away at Penryn coming out 20-5 winners over their opponents.

The first half saw some excellent running and more importantly, the players were driving over the ball when tackles were made. This won us alot of the ball which meant that we could attack the Penryn line and it came as no surprise when Harvey scored the first try. The second try came from some strong running by our forwards including Perran J who had a couple of Penryn players hanging off him but he somehow managed to pop the ball out to his namesake Perran G to touchdown. The third try came after some more strong driving by the forwards which resulted in Harry Chucher scoring the final try of the half.

The second half got under way with Redruth making 6 changes. The front row of Perran J, Haydon and Aaron remained on the pitch and were pushing Penryn about in the scrum. There was plenty of chances for both teams to score but the tackles being made were fantastic. Penryn managed to score a try after a good break, however the Reds had the last word with a breakaway try for Ben. Both teams played good rugby and i would like to say thank you to all the lads and parents for turning up, even though the coach was late!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The entire under 10′s players and parents wish Bruce a speedy recovery and hope to see you back soon.

See you all for training on Friday ready for Newquay at home on Sunday.

DAVID PENBERTHY WEEKLY UPDATE

Posted under Director's Commentary by admin on Monday 20 November 2006 at 12:00 am

First up this week is the news of who we will be playing in the EDF Energy
Trophy 3rd Round on Saturday 9th December…..and I can’t believe that this
has happened to us again! We play Esher away!
That is 1 week before our
league encounter….yes at Esher!! That’s 2 years following now that we have
ended being at the club that we play either before or after the cup tie!
Last year we were at Henley in the league one week and then at Henley again
the week after in the Cup! How bloody unlucky can you get!!!!! Of course
many will remember a few years back being away to Leeds to weeks following.
I suppose there are some small mercies that we don’t find ourselves
travelling up North. Without doubt it is the toughest tie of the draw! The
Cornish All Blacks are at home, again, to Manchester!

With no game this past weekend some of the boys, along with myself, Matt
Stearn and Dave Ricketts took the opportunity to accept an invitation from
one of our newest sponsors, Gwelanmor, to visit their hugely impressive
holiday development at Portreath. We also accepted new kit from them as well
as some very kind hospitality in the form of lunch. I would like to say
thanks to Damien Hall from Gwelanmor and also to Jeff Knuckey and Geraldine
and Doug Crew who were also there representing our Sponsorship Group for a
great couple of hours. Photos of our visit are attached, and have a look at Gwel an Mor’s website for what they have to offer.

Obviously with no rugby, I was able to watch the England v South Africa
game. Without overstating the obvious, England were pretty fortunate to say
the least. A couple of missed opportunities by the Boks certainly cost them
the game and obviously now puts huge pressure on Jake White, the Springbok
coach. It is surprising though what a win could do for morale. Don’t get me
wrong I am delighted England won and even more delighted that a former
Redruth player scored the winning try, but I still feel that the management
positions need to be addressed. We made hard work of a side that are 8 to 10
players missing from their full strength team, a team that lost by 30 points
to Ireland the previous week.

Martin Johnson stated on the Rugby Club in the
week that not only Robinson is to blame, the guys at the very top should
also be looked at very closely and changes made there. All in all, Robinson
has a “Stay of Execution” and if England don’t win this week then the axe
could definitely fall. On the positive side though it was great to see Phil
Vickery back in England colours. He certainly made his presence felt when he
came on and I would say he is pretty certain of inclusion again this week.
Hopefully Dan Ward Smith will get an opportunity as he had another
outstanding game on Saturday evening for Bristol against Bath. Grewcock also
looked good in this game and obviously had a point to prove, whether that is
enough to get him back in remains to be seen.

Interesting to read the latest financial information from Twickenham…seems
the RFU’s Turnover is down to

COLTS UPDATE Jim Trinder

Posted under Colts News by admin on Tuesday 14 November 2006 at 12:00 am

A mixed weekend for the Colts. The Under 17s recorded a big win at Hayle to keep a undefeated record in the under 17 merit table, winning by 53 points to nil and scoring 9 tries in the process.

The below par under 18 side suffered a heavy defeat to an impressive Penzance side who will be a challenge in the Under 18 cup match to be played later in December.

The Colts have two matches this weekend with the Under 18s at home to Truro on Saturday KO 2.30. Also a Colts fixture away on Saturday against a Paignton development side. Again a 2.30 KO.

We are still waiting to discover our opponents for the next round of the National Colts Cup. The third round tie between Maidenhead and Old Redcliffians has been delayed until this weekend with the victors meeting Redruth at the recreation ground. This 4th round tie will take place in early January.
