NUNEATON 16 REDRUTH 22

Posted under Match Reports by admin on Sunday 29 October 2006 at 12:00 am

When coach Nigel Hambly sits at home on Christmas Day, content after a satisfying Sunday lunch and having watched the Queens Speech at 3pm rather than waiting for the referee’s whistle, and the choice comes as to which DVD to share with the family, it’s a safe bet he may not choose this game to entertain them all. But whilst it wasn’t pretty to watch, the 50 or so Redruth supporters who all but outnumbered the home side’s contingent made the long journey home content and happy that the reds have now won 5 out of 9 this season and early – season doom mongers have scurried back in to the shadows.

On a gloomy day, and with a stiffish cross – pitch breeze, Redruth eventually wore down their plucky opponents by two tries to one. The game was memorable for seeing Mark Bright score his first try in Redruth colours ( green on the day to avoid a clash with the home side, not sure about the red and green mix though ! ) , and for fly – half Mike Hook hitting the upright and being charged down for each of his two conversions. Whilst this allowed the Nuns to gain a losing bonus point, Mike kicked four well – judged penalties to seal the points.

Well done too to centre P.J. Gidlow, scoring his first try of the season under the posts after charging down an attempted clearance kick by the home side.

To their credit, Redruth defended superbly, and Nuneaton rarely threatened the Redruth line for all their territorial advantage in both halves. The final whistle brought a huge cheer from players and supporters alike, smiles all round, and Rugby Manager David Penberthy popped on to the Supporters Coach to thank all those that had left Redruth at 7.30am for the long but ultimately well-rewarded hike up the M5 and M42. Acknowledging the lift it gives the players at grounds such as Liberty Way, a 16th player on the pitch almost, the trip home flew by.

The Development side went down narrowly to a strong Mounts Bay side 17-11, whilst the Youth Development side the Baa-Baas edged out St.Ives 2nds 20-19.

A small bus will be going to our old friends Barking next Saturday, and a ” Turkey and Tinsel ” trip to Esher is planned for December 16th.

Redruth: Teixeira, Lea, Bonds, Gidlow, Pedley, Hook, Churcher, Jacques, Harrison, Williams, Cook, Collins, Pascoe, Mann, Bright. Reps – Brown, Navin, Job, Joyce.

Referee: Ian Robinson. Touch Judges: Nigel Fallon & Colin MacDonald.

Attendance 250.

REDRUTH UNDER 13′s NEWS

Posted under Under 13's by admin on Wednesday 25 October 2006 at 12:00 am

Yes the under 13s hosted Penryn on Sunday morning.I think we might just all be mad going out in that, but there was no stopping the boys who were well up for it.

The game got under way and the Reds soon took charge scoring just after a few minutes and getting the conversion.

Penryn then had a good spell putting the Reds under some pressure for quite a while and were unlucky not to score, but the Reds was strong and eventually got back in control.Adding to the early try Redruth went into the second half 28/0.

The second half got under way and the play from both teams was excellent in such difficult conditions.
Redruths dominance continued and the best try was save till last when, our winger got the ball and then dissapear in the rain, the Ref gave a try so he must have made it over the line.

Final score 52/0 does not show how well Penryn played.

Reds man of the match went to Ben Richards who played the whole came for Penryn, who had a player out injured at the last minute. Thanks to Ben for making the game possible by being able to play 15 aside.

My Thanks to everyone on such a lovely day!

Bonus point win, improved attendance and hopefully things are now beginning
to look brighter. Saturday’s game was always going to be a toughie, and
Wharfedale came to Redruth looking to get their season back on track.

We
went into the game on the back of a good win at Henley and therefore the
expectation created was always going to heap pressure on the team. It took a
while to settle, no argument there, but any team at this level can be
competitive for 60 mins, if you can edge your way in front and keep exerting
pressure for the full 80, your dominance will reap the rewards and this it
did.

It was another pleasing performance by the team and Brighty’s arrival
has had an immense effect on everyone. Hooky had another good game and is
improving all the time. So it’s 3 on the bounce and a trip to Nuneaton this
weekend for the first time I think. It’s great to hear that a coach full of
supporters will be making the trip, thank you for the support you give the
team, we will do our best to make your trip worthwhile. Just a note on
Wharfedale, they are a very proud club and are very nice people, and have
been a National 2 side for a number of seasons, I sincerely hope they turn
their season around and I look forward to going to their place in 2007 and
for many seasons to come.

On the stats front, Mike Hook lies equal 2nd in the Top 20 Kickers with 86
points and Darren Dawidiuk is equal 4th in the Top Try Scorers. Neil Hallett
(Esher) is in 1st place in the kicking league with 115 points and Jervis
Manupenu (Halifax) is equal 2nd. In the Try Scoring table prop Duncan
McCormack (Esher) and Matt Moore (Esher) are in 1st place with 8 followed by
Ally Bressington (Stourbridge) with 7.

Davi heads a list of 6 players who
are on 5 which includes Sam Young of the Cornish All Blacks. So far this
season a total of 291 tries have been scored in National 2, 189 conversions,
221 penalties kicked, 5 drop goals and 7 penalty tries. On the discipline
front 70 yellow cards have been issued with 1 red.

Went to watch the Cornish Pirates on Sunday play Bedford. Despite the
weather, and thankfully it didn’t rain during the game, the Pirates put in a
great performance and were convincing winners. Both Sam and Lewis had great
games and it was pleasing to be there to see it. Scott Hobson also made it
onto the field late on so 3 players that played for us last year played
yesterday in National 1. They have certainly done a lot of work at the
ground at Camborne and I must say I was impressed by it all……I think
this weekend’s game against Exeter should be a cracker!

I was reading the Plymouth Albion/Nottingham report this morning and noted
that former Redruth player Neil Corin was a replacement for Nottingham
yesterday, although he was not used in Nottingham’s single point victory.

Lots of talk going on about admission prices and how to encourage new people
to come and watch rugby at Redruth. I have taken on board some of the
comments and would start by pointing out that there is a minimum fee set by
the authorities of what clubs have to charge at National League level. Many
people feel that

BAA – BAAS HELP

Posted under Match Reports by admin on Sunday 22 October 2006 at 12:00 am

Team manager David Wetherelt has asked us to put out a plea!
If anyone could help, in any way, with the day-to-day and week-to-week running of the Baa-Baas ( Redruth 3rd team ) , however small and seemingly insignificant in time, then he would be grateful. Please contact him at home on 01209 211699 for more details and information.

REDRUTH 29 WHARFEDALE 3

Posted under Match Reports by admin on Saturday 21 October 2006 at 12:00 am

Redruth continued their recent good form at the Recreation Ground on Saturday, beating Wharfedale by 4 tries to nil on a breezy but mostly bright Cornish October afternoon.

Playing in front of a crowd of around 700, the Reds dominated this game for large parts, and the visitors could not grumble if they had conceded more tries and lost by a wider margin. Fly-half Mike Hook played his best game yet in a Reds shirt, settling in well now to life in Cornwall, and another good kicking display saw Mike again pick up the Man of the Match award.

The award, with tankard supplied by One & All Sports of Fore Street, Redruth, was presented on behalf of The Davies Partnership St.Agnes by Kate Phillips.

Once again, No. 8 Mark Bright made a number of crunching tackles and decisive runs, Mark Richards continued in sound form, and what can be said about Darren Dawidiuk, top try scorer for the Reds with 5 now for the season after two more darting and mole-like scores on Saturday.

Redruth made it three in a row for the first time ever in National League
Two and picked up a bonus point in this four try to nil demolition of the
Yorkshire outfit. Having made the longest journey in the league Wharfedale
seldom threatened the Reds
