DAVID PENBERTHY WEEKLY COMMENTS Tuesday July 31st

Posted under Director's Commentary by admin on Monday 31 July 2006 at 12:00 am

A few days have lapsed since my last notes and a fair bit has happened in
that time! The point that has no doubt caused most interest is our pursuit
of extra players to compliment our squad. The response to our request for
sponsorship has been encouraging and I would like to sincerely thank those
people who have come forward and pledged their support. I am hopeful that I
can repay that support with some positive feedback over the next few
days…so in short, the pursuit continues and I’ll keep you informed
accordingly.

PJ Gidlow arrives back in the UK on Thursday along with his brother
Matthew…Matthew is a hooker/back row and will join the Reds and start
training on Thursday evening.

I note that EDF Energy are the new sponsors of the Anglo Welsh Cup for next
season. Their name will also be associated with the other RFU Cup
Competitions so we will be competing in the EDF Trophy.

Training is now entering its most crucial stage as the players get ready for
the pre season games which start on Saturday 12th August with a game against
Exeter Chiefs. The following week we travel to St Ives. Both games are
scheduled to kick off at 3:00pm.

Next Thursday (10th August) it’s Members Night at the club. There will also
be a Players Reunion. This all kicks off at 7:30pm.

As a complete aside, I take my hat off to a couple of guys who play cricket
for St Newlyn East. I was watching their game, with Redruth 3rd’s, at the
weekend and on 2 occasions batsmen “walked” when the umpires were undecided
about their downfall. All too often these days we see acts of bad
sportsmanship…they should all take a leaf of this club’s books!

I’m intrigued to find out who Lanson’s latest signing is…..a 10/12 who
will be there biggest ever signing!…..many guesses going on who it is but
we have to wait until next week to find out….before anyone says about me
having “sour grapes”, it’s not, I am genuinely interested to see who it
is…..any hints anyone??

That’s about it this week…….hopefully I will have some news soon for you
all on the player front…

Winners for May :

MIKE HOOK MEETS CRAIG BONDS

Posted under Player News by admin on Wednesday 19 July 2006 at 12:00 am

New signing Mike Hook was greeted with very hot and humid conditions on Tuesday evening as he trained with Redruth for the first time.

Mike said he was relishing the challenge and couldn’t wait to run out and experience a crowd and atmosphere he has heard so much about.

New captain Craig Bonds welcomed Mike for his first look at the ground, bathed in beautiful Cornish sunshine, before leading another very large turn-out in training at nearby Redruth School.

I suppose the biggest talking point this week is the news that hit the
website on Friday and our request for assistance in helping us secure the
services of 2 international players. Well that’s generated a huge amount of
interest, more in who they are rather than the assistance we asked for! Lots
of speculation that it’s Benji and Oscar…I can assure you that it’s not!

These guys are South Sea Islanders (not the Cook Islands) and quality
players with very good pedigrees…so please think about our request and be
part of a consortium of people who can bring these guys to the club which
will obviously benefit our cause for the forthcoming season.
Teams in our
league are recruiting big time and will prove to be very difficult
opposition this year. I’m not saying that our existing squad is not up to
it, its just good to have quality and strength in depth…remember last year
we used 42 players throughout the campaign!!….I hope to hear from you
soon…in fact very soon, as we only have a small window of opportunity, I
am looking to sort this in the next week to 10 days maximum.

Mike Hook has moved down to Cornwall, along with his partner Faye, and will
start training with the club tonight ( Tuesday July 18th ). Mike is real keen to get going and to
meet up with all the boys. I’m sure he is going to be a great asset and hope
they settle in the area…they have certainly had some great weather since
they have been down.

Watch out for a photo or two tomorrow of Mike at the ground tonight.

South Africa took a bit of a stuffing in Australia last weekend and now Jake
White is under the cosh from SARFU. This is the Jake White that the RFU
bosses are considering for the post of Elite Director of Rugby with
England……we are on the up!!

Very surprised to read the notice in last weeks West Briton advertising the
post of Cornwall coach for next season…especially when it was news to
those who fulfilled the role last year and knew nothing about it!! I would
of thought it a matter of course that if you are intending replacing a team
you give them the nod first just to let them know what’s on…not here I’m
afraid…..be interesting to see how next years team stacks up…..

People are beginning to ask about our new strip for next season and to see
if there is any chance of a sneak preview. The answer to that is no as the
shirt has not been manufactured as yet.

However, it will be predominantly
red with a green panel running vertically underneath the arms, white piping
and a green collar. The shorts will again be predominantly red but with a
green side panel and 2 white stripes running either side of the green panel.
The socks are pretty much the same as last but with green replacing the
black…..as soon as I get the opportunity to post something I will…….

Also congratulations to Jason and Ange Pengilly on the birth of their
baby son Joshua…the young man weighed in at 9lb 11ozs…..one for the
future again!

So only a couple of weeks to go now before the first pre season game and
things are shaping up nicely. Rich Kennedy, the new conditioning coach, has
been putting the guys through their paces at Redruth School and in the not
too distant future the boys will be back at the club training….

That’s it for this week….back soon !!!

DAVID PENBERTHY 11 JULY 2006

Posted under Director's Commentary by admin on Tuesday 11 July 2006 at 12:00 am

As you will have seen, the signing of our new fly half was completed on Monday
night. I have been in discussions with both Michael and his agent for about
3 weeks and it was very pleasing to get his signature in Bristol on Monday
evening. His CV speaks for itself and I am sure Mike will be an asset. He is
really keen to come down to Redruth and will move down from Swansea at the
end of this week.

At our initial meeting, which both Nigel and I attended,
we were aware that Mike was considering an offer to play in Ireland and be
part of the Leinster set up, but following those discussions and proposals
we were able to bring to the table Mike decided this was the best move for
him. Mike will also be filling the Sports Development Officer role that will
be attached to the club for the next 12 months.

What a great summer of achievement for English sport! Beaten by the Sri
Lankans in the “one dayers” 5 – 0, knocked out by the Redruth Amateur
Dramatics Society, sorry Portugal in the quarters in the World Cup, beaten 2
- 0 by the Aussies down under in the rugby, beaten in the Churchill Cup and
Plate in North America and now we have Pakistan visiting for a 4 match test
series…please don’t let that be 4 – 0 as well……well I would settle for
4-0 to us I suppose, but without Flintoff in the 1st Test I can’t see us
doing that……bring back Chris Tavare that’s what I say!!

Browsing Trelawney’s earlier and saw the new Lanson kit……sound marketing
there with a virtual reproduction of St Piran’s flag!…….would of thought
a fair few of their supporters travel from Devon so I wonder how they feel
about that….nevertheless, all credit to them for the design! Our kit is
being manufactured as I speak and will be slightly different from last year
although it is still manufactured by Samurai. I have included the colour
green into the shirt and shorts. Many people commented last year about that
combination and I’m sure it will be striking! There is lots of available
sponsorship on the shirt, shorts and off field kit so if anyone is
interested please let me know.

Elsewhere in the league things are pretty quiet on new signings but I am
sure everyone is pretty active on that front. I think National 2 this year
will be really competitive and I look forward to some great rugby in the not
too distant future.

Now then…..Zinedene Zidane…what a way to finish your career! Whilst you
cannot condone that sort of action just imagine what damage that could have
been done if it was 10″ higher!!…no teeth I think and one sore head!! The
press have all got their “expert lip readers” on the case and have come up
with what Materazzi said……of course Materazzi has denied it which you
would expect….but there must have been something that was pretty insulting
to induce that sort of action……Materazzi had a night to remember….gave
away the penalty, scored the equaliser and then got cleaned up!…at least
he did have something to roll around on the floor for!!!!!!!!!!!!On the
subject of dramatics, I don’t think I have ever seen such play
acting…certainly gave football joke status….

Enough of football…..5 of us attended the South West Coaching Conference
at Bristol over the weekend and enjoyed a good session from Jon Humphries,
former Welsh captain and now the forwards coach at the Ospreys. The rest of
it left a little to be desired!

That’s about it this week, our recruitment drive continues and I would hope
to announce another signing in the near future….

Cheers

NEW FLY-HALF UNVEILED

Posted under Player News by admin on Tuesday 11 July 2006 at 12:00 am

Redruth Rugby Club have secured the services of former Welsh U21 fly half
Mike Hook for the forthcoming season.

Mike played for Welsh Premiership team
Llannelli last season and has also been capped by Wales at Under 16, Under
18, Under 19 and Under 21 level. Mike, who is 23, has also played rugby for
UWIC, Newport, Bristol Shoguns and Aberavon and more recently has played
rugby league for the Celtic Crusaders in National Division 2 of the Rugby
League.

Reds Rugby Manager David Penberthy said, ” We have been looking for
a quality fly half for a while now and made our choice on the back of some
very good recommendations from Bristol coach Richard Hill and Welsh Under 21
Manager Graham Davey. I am sure that Mike will enjoy his time at Redruth and
that he will be a huge asset to our team.”

Mike made a hugely impressive
Welsh Under 21 debut against England back in 2002 when he replaced Gavin
Henson in the starting line up and scored 14 points in a Welsh victory
against an England side that contained Tom Voyce and Olly Barkley. Mike has
also appeared in 2 Under 21 World Cups with Wales. Rugby is very much in
Mike’s family as his brother James plays for the Ospreys and was capped by
Wales on their recent tour of Argentina. On that tour he joined an
illustrious club by scoring a try on his full debut. Mike will start
training with the Reds on the 18th July.

SIMON PETERS and LUKE COLLINS sign for the REDS 3rd July 2006

Posted under Player News by admin on Friday 7 July 2006 at 12:00 am

Redruth Rugby Club are pleased to announce the signing of centre Simon
Peters from the Cornish Pirates.

Simon comes back to Redruth after spending
one season at the Pirates where he figured a number of times on the bench.
Redruth Rugby Manager David Penberthy said ” Its good to have Simon back at
Redruth. He was with us on loan back around Christmas and made his senior
debut against Esher but was recalled to the Pirates shortly afterwards.
Simon has played right through Redruth’s mini, youth and Colts set up and
toured New Zealand with British Colleges in 2005 as well as representing the
South West Division. He is a quality player and will be a great asset to our
1st XV squad.”

Simon said that he was looking forward to coming back
to Redruth and playing some high level and quality rugby, adding that his opportunities were limited
last year and this played a big part in his decision to come back to
Redruth.

Simon is part of a great rugby playing family that are closely
associated with the Reds. Grandfather Raymond is a former player and club
Chairman and his Dad John was an outstanding flanker back in the 70′s/80′s.

Also re-joining the Reds is former Gloucester forward Luke Collins.

DAVID PENBERTHY JULY 3rd 2006

Posted under Director's Commentary by admin on Thursday 6 July 2006 at 12:00 am

Well back from holiday and feeling suitably recharged for the new season.
Its only about 8 weeks away now and preparations start in earnest, on the
field, this Tuesday. It will be good to get the squad back together and
start preparing for the challenges ahead. I have said this many times before
and I will say it again, just because we haven’t been splashing ourselves
all over the papers, lots of work is being done to secure the services of
key players for the forthcoming season. You will see over the next couple of
weeks the results of this hard work.

I note from the Henley site that their hopes of securing a major backer for
the forthcoming season has not materialised and its “Business as Usual” for
them again. Its always very dangerous relying on these sorts of promises
because you can get yourself it all sorts of problems by promising
undeliverable deals to players.

Now then, who is this “Fal View” character? He seems to have a lot to say
about Redruth and particularly me recently on the Trelawny’s Army website.
Thank you to those people who stood my ground for me, but if I am absolutely
truthful I don’t give a toss what this person thinks of me or my playing
record at Redruth. I know what I’ve done and I have the records to prove it
so I would suggest to Mr Fal View to get his facts straight before he “gobs”
off again…..but it was nice of him to say I was a
gentleman!!!!!!!!!…….

Since I’ve been away, the announcement has been made that Craig Bonds is
next year’s skipper with Richard Carroll as his vice captain. This is a
deserved honour for Craig after 2 seasons supporting outgoing skipper John
Navin. I’d like to register my, and no doubt everyone else associated with
the club, sincere thanks to Nav’s for a great 2 years and I sincerely hope
that he stays at the club long into the future. Richard has signed a
contract to stay at Redruth for a further 2 seasons which is great news.
Richard will give Craig great support and I’m certain they will make a great
team.

Pre season games have been arranged against Exeter Chiefs on Saturday August
12th at Redruth and the following Saturday, the 19th, we will travel to St
Ives. Both these games will kick off at 3:00pm. There will be another couple
of games arranged for the Development squad and these will be notified in
due course.

That’s about it for this week….keep your eyes posted for some
announcements in the not too distant future!

Cheers
