Once again I find myself a little late in getting something together to chat
to you about. Firstly I would like to convey mine and most certainly the
club’s and no doubt the supporters sincere condolences to the family of John
“Wacko” Wyatt who passed away a week or so ago. Wacko was a very
accomplished player and played over 100 1st XV games at Redruth. My lasting
memory of Wacko on the field was the incredible drop goal he kicked at
Coventry back in the mid 90′s, it must have been at least a 55metre effort
that sailed through the posts and was still rising as it did so. He was also
a “star” off the field and was always great fun to be with…he” be missed
by everyone that knew him.

Interesting stats produced by the NCA recently that show total attendances
at grounds in National 2. Not surprisingly we come out way in front of
anyone else. Our total attendances for league matches last season was
11,283. The following are how the others stacked up:-

Blackheath 9120

Moseley 8438

Launceston 7199

Esher 6485

Wharfedale 6247

Waterloo 6015

Halifax 5710

Harrogate 4833

Stourbridge 4550

Henley 3798

Manchester 3762

Orrell 2857

Barking 2214

In fact in each of the National Leagues we were way out in front…thank you
to everyone for their tremendous backing and support, I hope it continues
next season.

As you will of seen from other items on the site, Matt Stearn has joined the
club. This is a very welcome appointment that will help us all, especially
Nigel, in the forthcoming season.

So that’s about it for this week other than prediction time….

New Zealand 37 Ireland 22

Australia 26 England 18

South Africa 42 Scotland 14

Back soon….

A bit late this week…still coming down off “Cloud 9″ at the moment
following Monday’s EGM and the huge vote in favour of progressing to the
next stage of our plans to move to a new stadium at Tolgus Farm. As I said
on Monday, we, as a club, are very keen to progress and if we are to realise
this quest then we have to move forward in more ways than one. We need a
sustainable business to provide the foundations and we need a brand that we
can sell, by approving this progression we are on the way to bigger and
better things. It would be very easy for me to condemn some of the negatives
that have come from certain quarters, but I don’t think I have to…the
“True Redruth Supporters” have shown their support and hopefully we can move
forward and deliver the dream!

The Presentation Night went off really well, although there are probably a
couple of things we would do differently next time. I was pleased to be able
to tell people that PJ has signed for another season and that a number of
last years squad have also committed. We have given some of our promising ex
Colts senior contracts for the first time and I’m sure that some of these
will be making their senior debuts soon. Both Nigel and I are currently
tracking a couple of players and we hope to have news soon. Also, we are
actively progressing some coaching expertise to assist Nigel next season and
we are close to making an announcement there. All in all lots going on to
ensure that we are prepared for the start of the season which is only 12
weeks away!!

Looking forward to next season, you will note that our home fixture against
Lanson is scheduled for the 23rd December, the same day as the Cornish
Pirates entertain Plymouth Albion at Camborne. I have asked Lanson to
consider changing our fixture to the 30th, but after consideration they have
declined. It’s a real pity that they could not accommodate this as it would
have attracted a huge crowd on an otherwise free Saturday. However, the
reasons given are understandable and we now have to make the best of the
23rd!

On the other side of the world, the home countries start their international
tours this weekend. So that means prediction time again!!

Australia 23 England 25

New Zealand 42 Ireland 18

South Africa 31 Scotland 15

I think the 1st one is a real long shot, but I hope England do well. They
have changed the coaching team and with Brian Ashton there you can be
guaranteed a real attacking brand of rugby. Also Pat Sanderson is skipper
and he is a player that I respect incredibly. His commitment, passion and
energy should be noted by some of the more regular players who are at home
at the moment and I hope he makes a back row slot his own on this tour…..

Back next week…maybe!!

GROUND MOVE – THE DREAM ONE STEP NEARER TO REALITY

Posted under Community News by admin on Sunday 11 June 2006 at 12:00 am

An Extraordinary General Meeting ( EGM ) of the Club held at Redruth School on Monday evening HAS OVERWHELMINGLY AND RESOUNDINGLY SUPPORTED THE MOVE. Those for 168, against 9.

Club President Derek Collins announcement of the members vote came at the end of a 90 minute presentation from all interested parties, followed by some searching questions from the floor. As Club Captain John Navin so succinctly put it, this vote gives the project an overwhelming green light to move the project forward. There is, as yet, no guarantee of the new stadium passing planning and Highways permission, but this process will be commenced as soon as possible. The reality may take 2-3 years to realise, and no doubt there will be a lot of fine-tuning along the way, but what a magnificent stadium Redruth can look forward to.

Those who doubted the move were swayed on the night by the powerful arguments for the move, from having a modern, state-of-the-art arena suitable for all the local community and of a Premiership rugby standard, to inevitably coming to terms with the simple fact that the Recreation Ground can no longer sustain modern-day rugby and all that is associated with it.

The pictures here show impressions of the new ground-as yet un-named- clearly depicting the new two-tier 1000 seater stand. Ground capacity will exceed 16,000, modern floodlights, full security, and triple the hospitality and dressing room area.

In essence, as coach Nigel Hambly commented, it will provide a legacy for our children, our childrens children, and for many generations to come.

The Club extends its thanks to the huge turnout of Members at the meeting, and everyone is reminded that the plans will be on show from tomorrow at the club itself and for some time to come.

PLAYER NEWS UPDATE

Posted under Player News by admin on Friday 9 June 2006 at 12:00 am

Redruth Rugby are pleased to announce that Samoan centre PJ Gidlow has re-signed for the 2006-07 season. Team Manager David Penberthy commented ” I am thrilled to announce that PJ has put pen to paper for next season. He has made a huge impact both on and off the field, has been capped for Cornwall and is a firm favourite with the supporters. “

Also returning to the Club after a couple of seasons at Truro is fly-half Scott Martin. Coach Nigel Hambly remarked ” It’s good to have Scott back. He knows the set-up, is keen to return, and will provide valuable back-up in a number of key positions.”

New signing Craig Williams met his team mates for the first time at the Awards evening. Craig plays either tight or loose head prop, is aged 20, and joins us from Macclesfield, having come on as a replacement in last year’s play-off. Craig was a member of Sale Sharks Academy, and has also represented Cheshire Under 20s at Twickenham.

Finally, a number of outstanding Colts are stepping up next season to become members of the first team set-up. Coach Nigel Hambly has high hopes of big futures for them all, further adding weight to the superb youth policy Redruth Rugby has always maintained.

Below Colts Adam Keverne, Ben Taberer and Paul Teixeira.

Below Dean Rainey, Steve Kenward and Brett Rule. Dan Job will also be stepping up this year.

More news to be announced of course !!!

PLAYERS AWARDS EVENING A HUGE SUCCESS

Posted under Events and Social News by admin on Thursday 8 June 2006 at 12:00 am

The Players Awards Evening took place at the Clubhouse on Friday evening.

Well over 100 people came along on a hot, sultry beautiful Summer evening to see local MP Julia Goldsworthy present a number of Awards to First Team Players and Colts. Julia looked resplendent in pink, and certainly caught the eye of PJ, himself not an award winner on the night but who along with almost all the first team squad heard a first-class captains speech from John Navin and an impromptu rallying call for next season from Richard Carroll.

Ably compered by David Penberthy and assisted by Derek Collins, this was a first for the Club. Time will tell if the Club reverts to the more conventional Dinner next year, but for now this was certainly the right event to bring down the curtain on the 2005-06 season.

Main award Winners were :

Supporters AND Players Player of the Year James Mann.

Outstanding Season Recognition, Top Try Scorer and Club Blazer for over 100 First Team appearances Lewis Vinnicombe.

Squad player recognition for efforts on and off the field Nathan Pascoe.

Special Playing Merit Award Marek Churcher.

100% Playing Record this and last season, Club Blazer over 100 appearances Sam Heard.

Fitness shield and Club badge for over 75 Appearances Chris Fuca.

Most Promising Player Ed Carne.

Second Team Player of the Season Henry Blandford.

Colt of the Year Dean Rainey.

Most Promising Colt Brett Rule.

Framed caution report and prize Yellow Card Richard Carroll.

Not forgetting Supporter of the Year Ron Libby ( he couldn’t make it ) and Clubpersons of the Year for outstanding voluntary work Scott hodge and Mike Tregidga.

Matt Sandoz from BBC Radio Cornwall was there to prepare a piece about Monday’s EGM, and the Sunday Independent will be featuring a full page colour spread on the evening plus some comment on the Tolgus move in tomorrow’s edition. More photos and comment in next week’s West Briton too.

Club President Derek Collins will also be speaking live on Radio Cornwall’s breakfast show on Monday morning.

More presentation photos from the evening can be viewed on the Photo Gallery.

REDRUTH RUGBY CLUB POISED FOR HISTORIC MOVE

One of the most important decisions in Redruth Rugby Club’s long and illustrious history will be taken next week when members decide whether to move to a new ground. The Reds have played at the Recreation Ground since 1875, when Henry Grylls and W H Willimot brought the game of rugby football back to Redruth from college.

But on Monday evening the executive committee will tell members that the time is right for the club to leave its spiritual home and travel the short distance to Tolgus Farm, where they believe it stands the best chance of future prosperity and achieving its ambition of breaking into top flight rugby.

Roger Watson, honorary secretary, said: “The clubhouse at the Recreation Ground is inadequate in terms of growing the business to support semi-professional rugby; the changing rooms are unsuitable and there is nowhere to entertain sponsors.

“With only two pitches and no designated training area, the reserve pitch gets grossly overused. To begin to bring the Recreation Ground up to anything like standard will take several thousands of pounds and it is difficult to envisage how that could be raised.”

The Reds’ committee first looked at the Tolgus Farm site four years ago, when it came on the market, but plans were shelved due to financial limitations.

Monday’s members’ meeting takes place at 7.30pm at Redruth School and Technology College and will include a comprehensive presentation on the proposal.

The following evening, from 7pm-10pm, there will be an open evening at the clubhouse, where the professional team responsible for drawing up the plans plus officials will be on hand to talk to the public.

“The executive committee has already seen the presentation and, subject to the necessary legal and planning procedures being met, unanimously recommends its acceptance to members,” said Mr Watson.
