DAVID PENBERTHY WEEKLY COMMENTS

Posted under Director's Commentary by admin on Thursday 30 March 2006 at 12:00 am

Back again from another 700 mile trip to the North West and only 1 point to
show for it. The guys certainly gave their all in a very physical game and I
feel we were robbed, in many respects, when James Mann scored a perfectly
good try only for the referee to rule that he couldn’t see and deemed the
ball was held up! Luck certainly does not go our way when we need it most!
It was one of our better performances since Christmas but we still need to
get that winning feeling back and needs to be there very soon!

The set up at Manchester is good, they have a lovely playing surface, big
clubhouse, and their hospitality was excellent. One thing though…there
were not too many showers!!…especially when 6 teams are playing
there!!!!…. The queues for the showers prompted some of our guys to wash
under a cold tap outside!!!!!…..which caused many surprised faces from the
Manchester contingent!! Some of us more experienced ones just hung around
for an extra 10 minutes and then had the use of the officials room…….

It
was very interesting talking to some of the Manchester Officials and
listening to the plight they were thrown into when in the 1st Division. They
have only now been able to sort out their problems and have taken a huge
loan to sort it…there are many lessons to be learned by listening to these
stories and it is certainly not a position we want to get ourselves into.

So its down to the last month of the season…where has time gone??!!, and
this weekend Stourbridge visit Redruth. Stourbridge are also bringing their
Colts XV down to play our Colts afterwards. The main game kicks off at
2:30pm.

With Easter fast approaching, we have Imperial Medics on Good Friday and
Bath United on Easter Sunday. Bath are bringing a good side with them and it
will give us an opportunity to give some of our younger players an outing
against quality opposition. The following week we entertain Waterloo, who
should know by then whether they have been promoted, and in the evening we
have entertainment in the main bar.

Congratulations to the Reds Under 15′s who won the Under 15′s County Cup
last weekend. This extends their remarkable record of winning the County Cup
at every age group they have played in. This weekend the Reds Under 14′s
play their Cup Final at Saltash against Truro and on Wednesday night (29th
March the Colts Under 17′s play their final against Bodmin at Hayle.

The Skinners Brewery CRFU Knock Out Cup Final is on Wednesday 12th April at
Camborne where we will play Launceston…….Big game for both clubs and
hopefully a big crowd with plenty of supporters for the Reds!!!!!

Well that’s about it this week….hopefully a bit more to say next week!

UNDER 12′s AT PENRYN

Posted under Under 12's by admin on Wednesday 29 March 2006 at 12:00 am

Redruth under 12s at Penryn

On a very wet mothering Sunday the boys travelled to Penryn. SORRY! mums the boys made the most of the mud!.

After putting out a very experimental team and in the second half even swapping playing positions around ie props on the wing, the boys still put in an exceptional performance and won convinceingly without conceeding a point.

Well done and thanks to Penryn.

UNDER 9′S UPDATE

Posted under Under 9's by admin on Tuesday 28 March 2006 at 12:00 am

Apologies again, as I am again running late with my updates. Two games have been played since I last updated one and all! Firstly a lovely sunny day saw us up against Newquay and it took until the second of our agreed matches before our lads woke up. Newquay played well in the first match and won well 4 tries to nil.

With numerous changes made the Reds finally shoed what they are made of striking back and winning 4 tries to one.
The second match we played was on Sunday 26th March.

This was on a muddy pitch away to Penryn. The Reds once again showed their desire to throw the ball around and did it with some skill to boot. Josh Beech, Harry Churcher, Will Harris, Perran Gale and Harvey Bell all scored as the Reds ran out easy winners.

Three special mentions this week. Hayden Jackson and Zennor Medlyn for their whole hearted commitment, and for Harry Churcher for saving up a glorious break from the back of ruck for the moment his grandad arrived.

MANCHESTER 13 v 7 REDRUTH

Posted under Match Reports by admin on Tuesday 28 March 2006 at 12:00 am

Redruth made their first ever visit to Manchester’s Grove Park, hoping for a much better result than their last trip up north to Orrell two weeks ago when the Reds came away with a drubbing that no-one will look back on with fondness.

Sadly it was not to be, with the Reds coming away with a 13-7 defeat and a one point losing bonus to show for their efforts.

Attempting to build on the good scrummaging that saw the Reds dominate up front last week, coach Nigel Hambly was keen to see three good performances before the Cup Final on April 12th, a game that Nigel is gearing end-of-season towards and is relishing the challenge.

Redruth spent some time in the morning running out at Trentham Rugby Club in Stoke where the team stayed overnight. Our thanks to them for allowing us use of their facilities.

Redruth started with the same line-up as began at home to Launceston last weekend. Mark Harper returns from his Irish break on the bench alongside Peter Joyce, Ashley Lawton and Tim McBride.

Redruth were put under severe pressure from the off, and conceded an early penalty converted by fly-half Andre Wilson. Up against a big, energetic and keen pack, the Reds defended well, however after 25 minutes centre James Dalton raced in, Wilson converting and adding a further penalty soon after.

Nevertheless, Redruth stormed back with a fine solo try from a chip and run from Craig Bonds. Converted by Marek Churcher, the half-time score was 13-7.

Redruth came out for the second half to see the earlier dry warmth had given way to wind and rain, thankfully very much at their backs and in their favour.

Marek Churcher missed a reasonably straightforward penalty chance early in the second period, one which may have given heart to the Reds, for whom Dan Goodwin again showed up well, and for whom the front three all shone. The Reds also rued being turned over when attacking right under Manchester’s posts shortly after the penalty miss, and an increasingly error-strewn game, marshalled well by Manchester referee Trevor Fisher, saw Redruth try to take advantage of the wind as the rain relented.

Going into the final ten minutes, the rain returned and the game became increasingly scrappy, with the Reds continuing to defend well but the ball being all too often spilled.

Richard Carroll deserved many plaudits for battling through in clear pain, James Mann was held up when over the line, and Darren Jacques was brought down when only inches away from scoring.

The win takes Manchester level with Redruth, though we stay seventh on points difference, with fifth spot in National League Two still very much up for grabs. With Launceston’s win cementing their position, next weeks home game against Stourbridge, hammered today by Harrogate, must see Redruth return to winning ways. Manchester had not won since their victory at Redruth, and the Reds have not now won in four.

Coach Nigel Hambly praised the boys, picking out James Mann in particular. Highlighting how well the scrum performed, it was the line-out that let them down, winning only one in the second half. In what may have been one of the better performances since Christmas, we should remember the steep learning curve Redruth have been on this season, and to learn from our neighbours Launceston who may be the first to admit that it takes a season or two to adapt to the higher level, and how to eke out the results from games that go down to the wire.

The top two seem to be well on their way to National One, it looks like curtains for Orrell, and with Barking’s surprise home defeat and Blackheath on quite a run, the end of season run in looks fascinating. Soon to be promoted Waterloo visit on April 22nd, please note a live band ” Rudi’s Message ” has been booked for the evening.

COLTS UNDER 19s make Semi-Finals

Posted under Colts News by admin on Monday 27 March 2006 at 12:00 am

Redruth Colts under-19s made the Cornwall Cup Semi-Finals with a 12-0 away win at Truro on Saturday, a match played in atrocious conditions. Well done to them.

UNDER 15′s LIFT COUNTY CROWN

Posted under Under 15's by admin on Sunday 26 March 2006 at 12:00 am

Redruth Under 15′s make it 7 out of 7, lifting the County Cup at Camborne

In atrocious weather conditions, Redruth retained the title of Cornwall Champions against old advisories Truro.

The games only points came in a first half which saw the Reds attack Truro with the wind and the slope in their favour.

Playing conditions on the west Bank side were difficult, with the ground being well and truly cut up from the plate final played before the Cup Final.

Redruth kept the ball in hand well and were rewarded a try when Josh Matavesi ran n from 10 meters to touch down under the posts. He converted his own try.

Truro struggled to make it up the slope, but when they did, they looked dangerous.
Jake Champion had a chance to put three points on the board, but even his trusty boot could not contend with the wind from the top side.

Redruth struck again with some great work from Ben Noyce and captain for the day Jimmy Stevens was well rewarded a try with 2 minutes of the first half remaining.

The Reds game plan for the second half was simple, keep the ball in hand, play up the touchlines and give away nothing

DAVID PENBERTHY LAUNCESTON AND OTHER CLUB NEWS

Posted under Director's Commentary by admin on Wednesday 22 March 2006 at 12:00 am

Lots of talk going on over Saturday’s game… I was pleased that we didn’t
lose but disappointed that we didn’t win. It was a typical derby affair and
went down to the wire.

Many people have criticised the time keeping etc but
I can assure everyone that the actual “playing time” for the 2nd half was 40
minutes, it may of gone on for 53 minutes, but if you recall there were a
huge amount of stoppages for one reason and another. The Officials took a
bit of stick, and I know Nick Williams, the Ref, admitted afterwards that it
was not one of his better games, but we all have to accept that the ref
makes decisions based on what he see’s and what he is informed/advised, he
is the sole judge!

Lots of chat about “citings” etc again but I can advise
you that no player from either side will be “cited” following Saturday’s
game. Chris Brown, Nigel and I have had discussions about incidents, but we
have decided to move on, accept that its not in the interest of the game and
our relationship to proceed with any such action, and we now look forward to
the Cup Final on April 12th. Its good to see common sense prevailing,
something that maybe both sets of supporters need to start doing as there is
a lot of crap flying around at present!

This weekend we travel to Manchester, this will be a very difficult game and
Manchester are 1 of only 2 teams to win at Redruth this season. They also
sit just 1 place below us in the league, just 4 points behind! A real
challenge, but hopefully one we can rise to……

Good win for the guys on Sunday in the semi final of the Skinners Cup. 6 players made
their 1st XV debut and all made valuable contributions. Congratulations go
to Henry Blandford, Ed Carne, Dan Job, Dean Rainey, Ben Taberer and Alan
Rule, the last 4 being Colts, on making their debuts.

This Sunday the Under 15′s play their Cup Final, against Truro, at Camborne
(not sure of the kick off time). These lads have an exceptional record and
have won every age group final from the Under 9′s up to the Under 14′s….6
in all at present. There are some very tidy players in this team and some to
look out for are Tom Simmons, Josh Matavesi, Sam Newman who is a player I
rate very highly, Jimmy Stevens and Dan Dunstan…good luck guys, make it 7
in a row!

Next Sunday, April 2nd, the Under 14′s play Truro in the Under 14′s Cup
Final…however, and I’d be grateful if someone could explain to me the
rational behind this one…this final is to be played at Saltash!! Again I’m
not sure of the time, but all support would be gratefully appreciated!

Well the international season is now over and one to forget if you are an
Englishman….very poor stuff and I think it will take a massive effort if
we are to defend the World Cup successfully next year.

Well that’s about it for now, I do hope that the bitching stops on
Trelawney’s and we all move forward….supporters of both clubs are
obviously very passionate about their clubs, but lets leave out the
nastiness and unfounded slurs…..

Back next week…

CORNWALL CUP SEMI-FINAL REDRUTH 60 HAYLE 0

Posted under Match Reports by admin on Tuesday 21 March 2006 at 12:00 am

Before a reasonable crowd of about 250, Redruth opted to field a mixed side, blending youth and experience in this Skinners Brewery Cornwall Cup semi-final. Playing down the slope in the first half on a sunny afternoon ( what a difference a day makes ) Redruth not surprisingly took a while to settle down.

The first quarter was quiet and rather stop-start with neither side dominating before Hayle received their first yellow card for forward Rob Hardwick. Redruth kicked the penalty to touch and from the resulting lineout Julian Hosking was driven over for the first try. Gavin Donald kicked a tricky conversion. This was followed by a strong run from Dan Goodwin who touched down for the second try. A scuffle in midfield saw Hayle

UNDER 15′s PREPARE FOR CUP FINAL WITH A VICTORY OVER LUCTONIANS

Posted under Under 15's by admin on Monday 20 March 2006 at 12:00 am

Yeah I know, I had not heard of them either, but a quick check on their web site http://www.luctonians.co.uk/youth.htm showed that they were a well orgainised local sports club in the Midlands.

Anyway always ready to welcome visitors and with the club already enjoying the rugby weekend it was handed with Launceston the day before and Hayle that afternoon, the young Reds set about there visitors in much the way they do most other teams. James Williams was the first of four first half tries, the others coming from Dunstan, Newman and Matavesi who also converted two.

Luctonians seemed shell shocked by the Reds pace and ability to defend their try line with such strength. But the visitors never gave up, pushing toward the Reds line early in the second half nearly scoring after 5 minutes.

Fortress Redruth was not to be breached and five second half tries from Matavesi, Greening, Barr, Dickson and Lee Issacs, Matavesi coverting one, saw the Reds run out 49-nil winners.

At the presentation of plaques after in the bar the visitors were gracious in defeat, points to a hard night before as a small reason to their showing that morning, promising to make us their first point of call on their next visit.

Luctonians coaches named Sam Newman as their Man of the Match for the Reds, with his display of deft footwork and superb link play causing their usually strong three quarter line many problems.

Let hope it’s not to long before Luctonians visit us again they were a great bunch, players, coaches and parents…safe journey home.

Next weekend see the biggest game in the county that weekend on Sunday at …..Camborne…Pirates play who, it’s the under 15′s final between Redruth and Truro, lets hope this game lives up to what it should be, with the best two sides in the County going head to head. I am sure both sets of supporters will be up for it, ha ha.
