YOUNG HENRY

Posted under Under 8's by admin on Tuesday 29 November 2005 at 12:00 am

The most recent ball winner Henry Reed from the under 8′s came to get his ball from his rugby hero Damian Cook.

They came to the Exeter game, and with the players timetable being re-aranged due to the earlier start time, things (photo and meeting the player) didn’t go as smoothly as usual. In fact young Henry and his dad had to wait around after the match, be did they really care….no.

You had to be there to see the look on young Henry’s face when he eventually got to meet the ‘Gentle Giant’ Damian Cook. But it’s clear to see from the picture that Henry has a lot of growing in front of him to catch up with Cookie.

Henry and his dad come to all the Reds games, and Henry said he admired Cookie because he is a “great player”.

Because of his patience on Saturday and also telling me about his teams forthcoming tour, yound Henry has won his squad the first 2005 Squad Signed Ball. I understand that the ball will be raffled to make money for the tour, which I hear is to the mighty Wasps! Good luck with the fund raising and thanks once again to Damian Cook for his help on Saturday.

REDRUTH UNDER 9′s V HAYLE

Posted under Under 9's by admin on Tuesday 29 November 2005 at 12:00 am

Hayle brought a team of under 10 and 9′s to play the Reds and the young Reds rose to the challenge. Playing under 9 rules the Reds started strongly with Captain Will Harris to the fore. The Reds quickly took the lead with good inter passing from Billy Buckland and Hayden Jackson allowing Aaron Hampton to score.

William Arnot broke free soon after and ran half the pitch to score. Hayle quickly struck back and put the reds under pressure, however Josh Beech and Harry Churcher were strong in the tackle. With one strong tackle Josh was up and away with the ball and set William Arnot free to go in at the corner. Both teams made changes and Hayle kept it tight but Zennor Medlyn and Perran Jose kept the work rate high and soon after Perran Gale set up Josh Beech to score. Will Harris scored with half the team pushing him over. With time almost up Hayle powered over to double their tally.

Managers Comments – Redruth v Launceston & Exeter

Posted under Match Reports by admin on Sunday 27 November 2005 at 12:00 am

Well my silence has certainly got tongues wagging!……I have been
extremely busy with my work of late and have also been out of the country on
business so hence I have not had the time to put together any notes of
worthwhile content…..but just to satisfy your concerns ….

Lets go back a couple of weeks and our loss at Launceston…a very
disappointing day for all. I think we left ourselves on the bus for 20
minutes and only played anything like it for small periods in the 2nd half.
However I thought Launceston did the basics extremely well, controlled all
their first phase ball and kicked their goals when the opportunity arose.
The clubhouse was certainly full of life afterwards and I’m sure a good
evening was had by all who stayed around. Luckily we sustained no further
injuries and it was great to see Craig Bonds back again after his injury. I
would like to thank all those supporters who made the trip and kept cheering
the guys on until the death…..

Last week was another lesson for us to learn in how to be professional both
in our attitude and our approach to the game. Exeter came fully prepared for
everything we were planning to throw at them and without doubt they were the
best team that has played at Redruth this season. They were fit, strong and
adventurous and have certainly turned the corner from their mediocre form at
the beginning of the season. On saying that our guys never let their heads
drop and fought until the final whistle. I know many Exeter people were well
impressed by our commitment and “never say die” attitude. Lets we learn from
this experience and move forward.

So on Saturday we play Stourbridge. I was there earlier this week at an NCA
(National Clubs Association) meeting and they have some wonderful
facilities. I know there is a Supporters coach going and I’m sure you will
have a good day…..

So I will now get back to the work that actually pays me for what I do!

Talk to you soon……

Redruth 0 Exeter 57

The strong Division One Exeter side had too much power and pace for a plucky Redruth side. Redruth kicked off down the slope with the breeze at their backs on a pitch which had dried out well after Friday

LAUNCESTON 20-17 REDRUTH

Posted under Match Reports by admin on Friday 25 November 2005 at 12:00 am

It was a case of so close yet so far for the Reds as they went down to their fourth straight away defeat this term. Nevertheless, there were many positives to take from the game, not least of which was once again the youthfulness of the team, a result which sees Redruth retain sixth place in League Two, equal with Launceston but just ahead on points difference.

After a scrappy and uninspiring first 40 minutes, spent almost exclusively in their own half, Redruth literally paid the penalty for infringing time and again, playing in to the hands of the All Blacks dead-eye loan signing Stuart Alred. At least the significant away support had something to cheer after the break as Lewis Vinnicombe ran in two tries, running almost the whole length of the pitch for the first to touch down a speculative but calculated and searching kick ahead. The second was the highlight of the whole game as the Reds sucked in the Blacks defence towards the Paygate corner, then spun the ball rapidly along the line, Donald and Gidlow interacting well to send Lewis diving in for his second in the same right-hand corner. 17-12 up with less than 15 minutes to play, we all thought this is it, an away win at last and our first in seven against our Cornish Rivals. Suddenly the cold temperatures didn’t seem to matter, and the perhaps disappointing crowd of 1200 settled down to a grandstand finish.

However, a knock-forward, some ill-discipline, another penalty for Alred, and suddenly the Home team had their tails up, and were rewarded in the dying minutes with an unconverted try from winger Nigel Simpson in the dressing-room corner. Launceston hung on and were hugely relieved to hear the final whistle.

Cornish Pirates Loan signings Sam Betty and Adam Nicholls made their debuts, and Gavin Donald started for the first time, kicking two very difficult conversions though he may be disappointed to have missed an easier opportunity on the half hour.

At least referee Dale Newitt from Northampton did not have to show any cards to either side, and there appeared to be no fresh injury scares to worry the Coaching and Physio staff.

It was an All Blacks hat-trick on the day : the Reds Seconds went down 15-22 to a Launceston Development XV in the morning at Redruth, and as the result from Twickenham filtered through, there was plenty of post-match comment to be heard in and around the busy bar area.

Redruth can now look forward to the home Powergen Cup tie next Saturday against Exeter, whilst Launceston continue their league season at Henley.

As always, a selection of photos can be viewed now on The Gallery.

REDRUTH UNDER 14′s VERSUS LISKEARD AND LOOE

Posted under Under 14's by admin on Monday 21 November 2005 at 12:00 am

The under 14′s keep turning up the presure in Cornish under 14′s rugby with a fine win over Liskeard and Looe.

Always a pleasant venue to visit Liskeard were outclassed by the Reds on this occassion. The Reds skipper and link to a lot of their plays, Kieran Thomas scored 4 tries. Further tries came from Damien Lyons, Dean Bonds and Matt Wedlake. Aaron Penberthy was in spectatular kicking form, converting 5 times and a sixth conversion was completed by Nathan Strick.

The County cup competition will be interesting this season, with both Truro and Redruth putting in sparkling early season performances.

REDRUTH UNDER 11′S VERSUS LISKEARD AND LOOE

Liskeard 7 Redruth 49

The Reds had another convincing win on Sunday against a well organised Liskeard side, who were uncompromising in the tackle and contrary to the score line gave us a good test especially in the scrums, where their bigger pack posed the boys plenty of problems. Redruth kicked off down the slope and pinned Liskeard in their own 15 metre line, good work by Kieran Young led to the opening try by Daniel Eathorne, Steve Trenoweth converted. From the kick off the Reds ran the ball back at Liskeard and were camped on the try line , much to the delight of the Reds supporters, Adam Hanbridge charged over for his debut try for the Reds – Ollie Bryant converted. Ollie then cut through the Liskeard defence for the third try which Steve converted, Liskeard then found a bit of forward momentum and after an interception scored a converted try. Undeterred the Reds put the pressure on and from a Liskeard clearance Ryan Thomas cut through six tacklers to score an excellent individual try – Ollie converted to make the half time score 28 -7. Playing up hill in the second half the Reds scrum struggled against a big well drilled pack , but the backs dealt well with scrappy ball to consistently make ground and Dirk Moodie jinked his way through the defence for the fifth try – Steve again converting. The Liskeard pack began to tire in the final ten minutes and Kieran Young and Connor Parrot got a try apiece – Ollie and Dirk converted to make the final score 7 – 49.

Once again the whole squad gave 100% and showed some great ball handling skills along with their passion and commitment.

Our hosts showed great sportsmanship in defeat, especially as the score line flattered us a little and their after match friendliness was greatly admired by our players and coaches.

REDRUTH U’9 VERSUS LISKEARD AND LOOE

Posted under Under 9's by admin on Sunday 20 November 2005 at 12:00 am

Liskeard-Looe-25 V Redruth -40

This was a well contested game, which could have gone either way. Liskeard gave the Reds a big scare with a score in the opening seconds.

It took the Reds some time to find their feet on this huge pitch. The captain Will (The Rhino) Harris scored from a powerful run to get the Reds back to level score. This was followed shortly by a fine solo try by William Arnot. Liskeard made some strong runs which was met by some excellent defensive work by the Reds.

Perran Gale showed lightning pace which left want-a-be tacklers down the touch line to meet the last line of defence, only to give a pass back inside for Jack Williams to collect and score in the corner.

Another powerful run from Will Harris for his second of the day. It looked like the Reds were going to run away with this, but Liskeard dug deep and not only got back into this game but took the lead just before half time.

Changes were made to allow everybody a game. Liskeard defended well for long periods of time until Josh Beech got the Reds back on level terms. Josh’s, partner in crime Harry Chrucher came good with a try from the back of the scrum. With a big hit from Josh the tide turned. All the running was coming from the Reds. Harvey Bell finished in the corner from a powerful run down the right wing. Moment later Reds found themselves on their own line when play marker Josh broke down the line, passed back in field to Aaron Hampton who strong running tied in many defenders, but 2nd phase ball was spun right, the young Reds only being stopped 5m short of the line. A quickly recycled 3rd phase ball was spun left to be touched down by William Arnot.

Many thanks to the coaches Bruce, Chris and Paul. Also many thanks the Parents of the Reds U9 , a good crowd has followed the Reds around . The boys have done Redruth RFC proud on and off the pitch.
