GENERAL CLUB NEWS

Posted under News by admin on Monday 31 October 2005 at 12:00 am

The Clubhouse and affected Grandstand area will be out of action for some time, and the clean up has begun. No date has yet been set for any re-opening: though rest assured everything is being done to ensure it will be as quickly and safely as possible. A grand re-opening night will be arranged, probably on the Friday preceding a home fixture.

The REDS FORUM has been closed for the short-term. It was proving to be used less and less in favour of the “Cornish Rugby ” thread on the Trelawnys Army site, and a link to that particular forum has been set up. It will help free up space on this site, which has recently been exceeding all expectations and previous use records. The Gallery has been a tremendous success, and long may this continue.

REDRUTH U’11s AT PENZANCE

Posted under Under 11's by admin on Monday 24 October 2005 at 12:00 am

The U11s gained a hard-earned win over the county champions on Sunday. Penzance were short of two props, so Connor Parrot and Scott Gregor played the first half for Penzance, with Adam Harris and Adam Hanbridge playing the second. A special thanks to these boys for making the game possible.

The game was a tense affair with both sides making uncharacteristic errors, but it was Redruth who settled first with Ollie Bryant opening the scoring, Steve Trenoweth converted. Kieran Young added another, which Ollie Bryant converted to put the Reds 14-0 ahead. Penzance started to get to grips with the bigger Reds pack, and after some good passing moves scored a good try. Half time 5-14

The second half with Penzance putting the Reds under a lot of pressure leading to their second tries to close the gap to two points. From this point on the Reds stepped up a level, with relentless forward drives. From tap penalty Kieran Young charged over for his second, then the pack pushed him over for his third, Ollie Bryant converted both to put the Reds in total control, only some brave defending stopped the Reds from adding to the score.

The game was played with great commitment from both sides but with good sportsmanship and co-operation between the teams, which had sometimes been missing in the past, we look forward to the return match in the New Year.

Final score, Penzance 12 Redruth U

REDRUTH U’9s VERSUS PENZANCE

Posted under Under 9's by admin on Monday 24 October 2005 at 12:00 am

Redruth under 9′s winning start to the season continued with a hard fought win over Penzance.

On a bright sunny day at the Mennaye all the Redruth players played their part. Early on both teams were strong in defence but good support play from Andrew Martin led to Josh Beech scoring.

The second try came from Aaron Hampton and Will Harris who made strong breaks which led to William Arnot feeding Harry Churcher who darted over. The Reds third came from a bulldozing break from Will Harris led to a easy try for Aaron Hampton.

Both teams made changes to keep everyone involved but this helped Penzance more than Redruth as they came back well with two quick tries. However some good defence from Perran Jose and Hayden Jackson kept the Pirates out as they pounded at the Reds try line.

The tempo of the match was high and as further changes were made Redruth came back strongly.

Jack Williams and Harvey Bell linked well with Perran Gale who danced through the Penzance cover to feed Will Harris who despite men hanging of him got over the line. With the Reds pushing hard gaps were found and William Arnot sprinted over for two tries.

However the Reds found Penzance were no pushovers as the came back with two quick scores. As the match moved into the final few minutes the powerful running of Will Harris was rewarded by another good try.

In the last minute of the match the young Reds scored twice, once when Josh Beech set Ben Williams free and Harvey Bell went over for a try, and in the dying seconds a quick penalty led to Andrew Martin scoring.

Final Score Penzance 20 Redruth 45

REDRUTH UNDER 14′s VERSUS NEWQUAY

Posted under Under 14's by admin on Sunday 23 October 2005 at 12:00 am

The under 14′s continued their winning ways with a superb team performance against a game Newquay squad.

Kieran Thomas opened the scoring for the Reds after 5 minutes. Aaron Penberthy converted.

Playing toward Hell Fire corner the Reds won a scrum against the head, Penberthy spun the ball wide to Damien Lyons who unselfishly popped the ball to Dean Bonds for the Reds second try. Penberthy failed with the conversion.

Newquay were never out of the game, but the well-drilled Redruth squad look much more confident in defence this season.

After 18 minutes of play, Kieran Thomas once again broke free and looked clear, Newquays full back just managing to stop him with 20 metres to go, Thomas released the ball to Liam Norwell, who was well tackled by three Newquay players and what looked like a scoring opportunity went missing.

The Reds continued to pressure the Newquay line and two more tries were scored just before half time from Jake Bryant and Ben Gregor

Reduth started the second half as they finished the first, attacking the Newquay line. Thomas again breaking free to touch down under the post, Penberthy converting 29-nil.

The Hornets players never gave up, Damian Lyons made two cracking tackles to keep them at bay. In the end Newquay were rewarded a deserved try from Will Eustace, converted by James for a final score of Redruth 29 Newquay 7.

Redruth head coach, Nigel Hambly named the Reds ‘man of the match’ as Aaron Rowe whose work rate, ball handling and carrying was tremendous through out the match.

REDRUTH V ORRELL REPORT

Posted under Match Reports by admin on Sunday 23 October 2005 at 12:00 am

Redruth 13 Orrell 10
Redruth, playing up the slope towards the scoreboard, started off in fine style when the driving play of the forwards took them towards the Orrell line, the ball was moved wide to Lewis Vinnecombe to dive over for the try. Redruth had another opportunity shortly after from a cross-kick but Vinnicombe was unable to take the ball when a try seemed certain. Mid-way through the half Paul Thirlby was injured and while he was being treated, Orrell moved the ball wide and scored a try through Warren Spragg in the Piggy Lane Corner converted by Chris Glynn to give them the lead 7-5. Redruth had another opportunity to score when a kick ahead was chased by Lewis Vinnicombe and Oscar Osir Osula, but the touch down was disallowed for a knock-on. Near the end of the half John Navin and James Mann received simultaneous yellow cards for contact with a man on the floor. This made 13-man Reds raise their game and further driving play by the forwards lead to a try by Mark Harper as all and sundry piled in. Unfortunately, an error from the kick off gave Chris Glynn the opportunity to kick a penalty for Orrell bringing the half-time score level at 10
