MORE REPORTS PLEASE

Once again, I have been asked to find out why the whole mini/junior section is not represented on the clubs site.

All it needs is a parent/relative or player to send a report. In the main, they are not edited, as this is your site for your news. The only time we will not enter a story is where it is abusive or liable to cause offence.

In the main, your report needs to say who you played and where the match took place. What the score was, this can be done as a total or

Managers Comments – Redruth v Barking

Posted under Match Reports by admin on Monday 26 September 2005 at 12:00 am

Phew …. what a great game between 2 very committed teams. It was very
pleasing to be able to get the result we did, which somewhat makes up for
last years home defeat and at the same time end Barking’s incredible run of
23 games unbeaten. It was also very pleasing to see, and most definitely
hear, the great support once again. I did say last week that I was a bit
concerned at the small numbers in the bars before and after the games, but
this week the atmosphere was back to something like its best and I thank you
all for that. People must believe in us and what we are trying to do. We are
very realistic in our goals and we will continue to provide the best quality
rugby we can for you to enjoy.

So the first month of our Division 2 campaign is out of the way and we have
13 points out of a possible 20 which is a very solid start and one that we
are all pleased with, BUT we are under no illusions about what is to come
and we know we have to work very hard to continue this solid start. We have
some very difficult games coming up and we need to take our home form on the
road. The guys have a weekend off this weekend and then travel to Henley on
October 8th. This won’t be easy! There is a Supporters Bus arranged and a
list can be found in the Clubroom. There are still some places left.

As many of you will of noticed Chris Woods is no longer with us. Chris was
with us, initially, for a month on trial but has decided that he prefers to
be in London so we have mutually agreed that it is in the interests of both
parties that the month period is not extended. We all wish Chris and Michelle
the best of luck for the future.

Moseley continue to make ground at the top of the table with a very good win
at Waterloo. Esher are making solid progress and are in 2nd spot. In
National 3 South, North Walsham have made their usual solid start and have a
100% record after 3 games. It will be interesting to see if they can sustain
this for the whole season and not drop off the pace after Christmas.

Next Monday is the draw for the 4th Round of the National Trophy and here’s
hoping that we get a home draw. Our record of getting home draws is not
good, so don’t expect too much in having another home game before our league
encounter with Orrell on the 22nd October.

Once again thank you to all those who came on Saturday and to those who
passed on many positive comments about the way the club is going and the
brand of rugby we are trying to play. Everyone has been very supportive over
the past 3 seasons and hopefully that will continue….thanks

Back soon…

REDRUTH 21 BARKING 8 Report and Comments

Posted under Match Reports by admin on Sunday 25 September 2005 at 12:00 am

Redruth made a nervous start before a crowd of around 1000, a number of errors both in the lineout and kicking for touch putting themselves under pressure and which gave Barking

Your Support

Posted under Director's Commentary by admin on Wednesday 21 September 2005 at 12:00 am

It is accepted and acknowledeged that The Reds are one of the best supported
teams in the National Leagues. Supporters travel long distances to watch
rugby both at Redruth and at our away destinations. The players value this
support and recognise that without it, some of our results, particularily
last year, could of gone against us. Many of our fellow clubs, in National 3
last year, and I’m sure those in National 2 will love playing at Redruth in
a pretty intensive atmosphere. However, over the last couple of weeks
myself, Nigel and a number of the players have noticed the small numbers in
the bars both before and after games. The players are particularily keen for
supporters to stay around after matches so that they can chat and say
thankyou for the support. Towards the end of last season it was great and I
know that was probably down to the situation we were in … but this year is
no different, in fact it is absolutely vital for our support to increase. If
anyone has a particular reason that they would like to share about why they
don’t come into the bars, then please feel free to talk to me or another
member of the Executive about it……we truly value the tremendous support
that we are given and we’d like to be able to say thank you face to
face……See you at the weekend!

Managers Comments – Redruth v Harrogate

Posted under Match Reports by admin on Monday 19 September 2005 at 12:00 am

A very solid team performance on Saturday resulted in a good home win for
the boys. In what was a very robust and physical game we just missed out on
the bonus point victory, but lets not worry too much about the bonus point,
it was absolutely vital that we gained a victory. Harrogate are “old
stagers” in this league and have been there for 12 seasons or so and I’m
sure they will be planning a warm reception when we visit there next year! .
Next weekend we entertain old adversaries Barking who have made a good start
in National 2 so far winning their first 3 games.

Congratulations to Paul Thirlby who broke the record for “most points in a
game” for Redruth on Saturday when scoring 24 points. He beat the previous
best of 23 set by Steve Larkins back in 2000.

As mentioned last week, it was very sad to hear about Tony Mead. Tony played
for the club for a number of seasons and played some 45 times for Cornwall.
He was also a member of the 1991 county side that beat Yorkshire in the
County Final at Twickenham. He’d recently been promoted to Detective
Inspector. He leaves a widow and 4 month old son. His funeral is at the St
John Baptist Church Instow (Between Bideford and Barnstaple) North Devon on
Wednesday 21st September at 2:00pm

At last the 2nd XV/Development XV got their season underway with a sound
victory at St Ives. Great credit must go to St Ives for fulfilling the
fixture. We have some fairly strong links with St Ives now with a number of
former Reds playing there such as Stuart Turnbull, Neil Corin, Nick Croker,
Ian Boase and Simon O’Sullivan. It was good to see Mark Scrivener back on
the field playing. Mark played a full 80 minutes, his first outing since his
serious injury last October. We all hope that Mark gets back to full match
fitness and is able to press for 1st team selection at some stage in the
season but its far too early to think about that yet.

Elsewhere in the leagues, Moseley continue to impress as do Waterloo.
Launceston got their season underway with a good home win against
Stourbridge.

The Supporters Club have organised a coach to Henley on Saturday 8th
October. There is a list in the top bar so get your names on quickly.

We enter the Powergen Trophy in Round 4 and the draw for that takes place on
Monday 3rd October. It would be nice to have a home draw but our luck in
getting this is not good so be prepared to travel once again! St Ives have
made Round 3 and they have been drawn against Cinderford at St Ives on
October 1st…good luck to them and lets hope they win and get into Round 4.
I wouldn’t mind an “away” trip to St Ives!</[>

I am told by many that our new kit has gone down a storm. The kit is made by
Samurai who are relative newcomers to the trade. I believe that a good image
both on and off the field is vital and this kit enhances that requirement. I
must thank Pete at Rugby Tackle in Penzance for his help in sorting this.
Replica shirts are available through the club shop.

So, the eagerly awaited rematch with Barking is next up and I hope there is
a big crowd to support the team….see you there!

Redruth 34 Harrogate 15

Posted under Match Reports by admin on Sunday 18 September 2005 at 12:00 am

In this fiery encounter the Reds opened the scoring with an early penalty by Paul Thirlby. Harrogate hit back immediately with two quick tries from their backs. First Mike Aspinall touched down converted by Mark Pease then Pease himself touched down. Redruth looked very shaky at this time before they tightened up their defence. Thirlby reduced the arrears with a penalty before darting through for a try after driving play by the forwards, he converted this to put the Reds in the lead. Near the end of the half Thirlby added another penalty and Pease added one for Harrogate. Half time score Redruth 16 Harrogate 15.

Redruth made good use of the slope and wind in the second half and a Drop goal by Thirlby increased the lead. The forwards were working well and combined with good defence prevented Harrogate from scoring. Thirlby added another penalty before James Mann scored after a catch and drive from a lineout in Hellfire Corner, Thirlby adding the extras. Harrogate pressurised the Redruth line for a period near the end but the defence held and Redruth finshed strongly when Lewis Vinnecombe scored a try in injury time.

The Reds Man of the Match award was presented to James Mann by Malcolm Thomas, Chairman of the RFU Board.
