DINNER AND DANCE REPORT

The Annual Redruth RFC Dinner and Dance was held in the Forum Ballroom at the Penventon Hotel on Friday June 10th. It was canapes and smiles all round as a record number of over 160 guests assembled for a glorious Summer’s evening of entertainment, fun and surprises-and that was just Club Captain John Navin’s ( it’s Navin, as in Navy, like Hyacinth Bouquet, not Bucket )after-dinner speech.

Superbly compered by MC Keith Martin, always at home with a mike in his hand and people asking each other what he’s saying ( just joking Keith ), Club Secretary Roger Watson performed a rugby-minded Grace, President Derek Collins acknowledged and welcomed the superb turnout of guests and sponsors, and then came Captain, or is it Chancellor now, Navs speech. A 35 minute extravaganza packed with references and jokes too risque for a family website, though do ask Dave Ricketts when you see him if he does play bedroom games of a windy variety. John took us through the increasing highs of a truly memorable season. With a few gifts to some first team players, including a Richard Carroll wig of long, flowing, blonde locks, false teeth and tattoos to Nathan Pedley. A shame then that Newqs himself was away on holiday, for how could we have told them apart otherwise ?

With a fine response given by special guest Dave Martin, Cornwall RFU, followed by coach Nigel Hambly and Team Manager Dave Penberthy wrapping things up and giving out team awards for the season-see below-it was a truly memorable evening. We hope it will be even better next year, Friday June 2nd 2006 by the way !</>

AWARDS: Training Attendance-Jason Pengilly, Fitness Shield-John Navin, Roy Jennings Cup for Most Improved Plaayer of the Season-Damien Cook, Supporters’ Player of the Year-Richard Carroll, Players’ Player of the Year-Darren Jacques, 100% Playing Record-Nathan Pedley, Sam Heard, Craig Bonds, Club League Try Scoring record-Nathan Pedley, Special Recognition/lifetime achievement Award-Neil Douch, Most stupid remark made in the season award-Mark Richards, Nathan Pedley and continually Sam Heard, Farewell and Thanks-Bede Brown ( a horrific blue cocktail was ” downed ” in one, pictures on the Gallery ).

It should also be acknowledged that Peter Bosanko won the A.J. Paul & Co Cup for Clubperson of the year, since he put more points on the board than anyone this season-he is our scoreboard man ! Well done too to Chris Fuca and Ben Sidgwick for winning the Nathan Thomas Trophy for Most Promising Player and the Mr. and Mrs. J.T.Penberthy Shield for the 2nd XV Player of the Year respectively.

There are a selection of photos from the evening on the gallery section, under 1st XV Dinner and Dance.

Thank you to everyone who came and made the evening a huge success. We wish Bede well as he seeks pastures new in London, and his gift to the Club of a Kiwi work of art will hang proudly in the Clubhouse. We also trust that Douchy enjoyed his night in the Penventon Honeymoon suite, kindly donated by Nigel after an auction provided by Midas. Maybe he will now realise he still has the energy to play for one more season ! Finally, huge congratulations to Centre Andy Hymans on the birth of his first child Jacob. See you all next year !

FORUM FOR DISCUSSION

Posted under Supporters News by admin on Friday 1 July 2005 at 12:00 am

The Forum, as listed on the contents to the right-hand side of this screen, is designed for you, the supporter and visitor, to voice your comments, praise, criticisms and suggestions, without entering into personal, abusive or confidential areas.

We welcome as much feedback as possible, good or bad, and it is , I can assure everyone, read by the Committee and brought up for discussion where appropriate.

It was talked about last season that we have a song to welcome the players on to the pitch. A great number of teams now do this. Who can forget Barking’s ” Who let the dogs out? ” and Havant’s ” The Boys Are Back In Town. ”
So whilst not promising anything, have you any suggestions to help Keith out on the P.A. at five to three in September ?
