Well one Saturday gone with no club rugby only a few left now before it all starts again!!

Congratulations to the 11 “Reds” who represented the county last week in the Championship game at Lydney. Also congratulations to Nigel who co-coached the team with Launceston’s Chris Brown. They have a hard fixture this weekend against Devon at Brickfields the winner of which will surely go on to win the group and thus appear at Twickenham in the Final at the end of the month. What an end to the season that would be for Nigel and the boys if they were to get there….

Not much else happening at the moment. Lots of talking going on with players to get them signed up for next year. I’ll keep you posted as things develop.

Seems there are a few movements going on around the County at the moment particularily down at Mounts Bay. I’m sure there will be a lot more over the coming weeks.

Dan Goodwin has returned to New Zealand safe and well. I have been in touch with him and he has settled back into life over there but misses Cornwall very much

Well British Lions feaver is beginning to kick in now with the tour only a few weeks away…Jonny has made it but will Phil Vickery?? Time will tell…….

Back soon

Managers Comments – Redruth v Macclesfield

Posted under Match Reports by admin on Tuesday 3 May 2005 at 12:00 am

Now that I have dried out…ever so slightly though…I can reflect on what I can only describe as a brilliant season. Saturday’s performance and result was a just reward for everyones hard work, not only this season but the previous 2 when the foundations were clearly laid for this success. It was great that James Lancaster was there to be part of the celebrations. There are so many people to thank for their contributions and I sincerely do…especially the wonderful support we have received both home and away. Seeing so many people at the Recreation Ground for a club game was a humbling experience and the atmosphere both before, during and after the game was mind blowing.

The game was a fairly robust encounter with the early exchanges pretty well matched, but as the game progressed through the first 40 minutes we definitely got on top although we could not turn our domination into points. There were one or two heated exchanges but referee Nick Williams was well in control. The first 5 minutes of the second half saw us go from 8-3 up to 9-8 down and I must be honest I thought to myself “Oh no don’t tell me its going to be one of these bloody games”, but I was reasssured by Nigel that it was only a hiccup and how right he was! The next 35 minutes were brilliant with us scoring some superb tries and playing some great rugby. When the final whistle went no one could hold back their emotions any longer and the end had come to the best season I can ever remember.

The hard work now starts and we really do have an enormous amount to do. First up is to start talking to players and get that sorted, we can then sit down and plan for the future. I will keep you posted on signings etc.

Finally, I want to thank Nigel for a brillinat season. Nigel has really had to earn his stripes with a lot of people and he has done this superbly. He is an absolute credit to the club and I wish him all the best for the forthcoming County Championship season with Cornwall. I must also thank all the players, not only those in the 1st XV but those in the 2nd’s and Dick Whitney for his great efforts…

Also I must thank Steve Abbott, Derek Bray and all concerned with the bar and catering side for their great efforts over the weekend and the season and to Wendy and her team in the shop and coffee shop…Every great club needs to have good people working hard off the field…we are lucky to have that. I would also like to thank all on Match & Grounds for their hard work too .

So what do I do now?….I’ll probably have a few games of cricket for Redruth 3rd’s and hopefully enjoy some nice sunny Saturday afternoons…but no matter how sunny Saturdays or any day for that matter are…none will have memories like Saturday 30th April 2005….

Thank you all once again….

David Penberthy

A Committed View…

Posted under News by admin on Monday 2 May 2005 at 12:00 am

Does anyone know the way to Amarillo ? Judging by the few hundred dancing the night away on Saturday night I suspect not. What a day and night.

On behalf of all the Committees, and Volunteer Staff both on the day and throughout the season, may I say a huge well done and congratulations to Nigel Hambly, David Penberthy, Guy Bonham, David Ricketts, their supporting cast plus of course a tremendous team of players, from those who played just a minute or two to Craig Bonds, Sam Heard and Nathan Pedley who started every game.

As one senior player said to me on Saturday evening, it’s days like that that make it all worthwhile, and the emotion-not to say tears-in the tunnel before the game, let alone at the final whistle simply don’t come along every week-or decade for that matter.

The tumultuous cheer that greeted the team on to the pitch would have drowned out every Steam Engine at Trevithick Day down the road, it was simply a privelege to be there. No doubt Dave Penberthy will talk more about the game in his comments, but on behalf of the Commitee a big, big thankyou to everyone who made the day go so well and smoothly, and the fantastic support who surely will lead to a long queue at the Doctor’s tomorrow morning for laryngitis cures.

For those of you who didn’t buy a match programme or were unable to be there, and what a truly memorable souvenir of the day they are, packed with pictures, a season’s review and various messages and stories, some are still available from the Clubhouse, or at next weeks Supporters Evening ( May 10th, 7.30pm in the Clubhouse: video and Guest Speaker Director of Rugby at Penzance) or by post from David Thomas, 54 Wheal Agar, Pool, Redruth, TR15 3QL, enclosing a SAE plus cheque or postal order for

Redruth 33 Macclesfield 14

Posted under Match Reports by admin on Sunday 1 May 2005 at 12:00 am

Redruth were promoted to National Division Two after this superb performance against a highly competitive side from Macclesfield. Another large crowd were treated to an entertaining game of rugby, excellently refereed, between two sides that were totally committed.

The Reds opened the scoring early with a penalty by Bede Brown and then had to wait a while before Richard Carroll was driven over for the first try. Macclesfield received a double blow just after when Flanker, Captain Richard Jones was yellow carded and influential player-coach Dave Muckalt went off with a serious arm injury. Redruth put severe pressure on the Macclesfield line but to their credit the defence held and just before half time Macclesfield’s Mike Newell kicked a penalty to give the half time score Redruth 8 Macclesfield 3.

Macclesfield began the second half strongly and two Newell penalties put them in the lead. Redruth then began to move the ball and Paul Thirlby chipped ahead to touch down. Redruth turned down a penalty in front of the posts kicking to touch, thankfully the lineout catch resulted in Mark Harper being driven over for a try which Bede Brown converted. Brown increased the lead with another penalty. Redruth finished off with tries by Craig Bonds and then Nathan Pedley scored his twentieth of the season. Macclesfield were not finished and strong play in the final minutes resulted in a try for Richard Jones.

Congratulations to the players, Coach Nigel Hambly, Rugby Manager, Dave Penberthy and all the background team for giving the supporters such a memorable season and the chance to watch Redruth play in a higher league again.

The Reds Man of the Match award was presented to Darren Jacques by Murdo Mace of Midas Construction.
