Redruth Under 10′s at Bath Festival

Posted under Under 10's by admin on Wednesday 27 April 2005 at 12:00 am

The team finished off the season with a great display against quality oppostion on Sunday, getting to the semi – finals of the festival. Redruth opened against Coresham and drew 5-5 with Kieran Young scoring for the Reds. Next up were Bath B in a tense match the Reds scored a try in each half by Aaron Dockery and Kieran Young to win 10 -0. The team then immediately played againg against Avon. Aaron Dockery and James Trewren scored in the first half and Kieran Young scored in the second half to make it 15 -0. The Reds topped the group with 5 points and Corsham were runners up with 4 points.

In the semi -final the Reds played against Bath A. The first half was scoreless, Bath then scored from a penalty close to the Reds line. Despite a great effort the Reds could not level and went out 5-0.

The whole squad gave a great performance as they have done all season and they can all be proud of the way they have represented the club both on and off the field this season.

Well done to all of them.

Managers Comments – Redruth v Hertford

Posted under Match Reports by admin on Sunday 24 April 2005 at 12:00 am

So the league season is now over and we move on to the Play Off game with Macclesfield next Saturday. Hertford certainly gave us a game and obviously tried to get under our skin. The first 20 minutes was played at a fast and furious pace with tempers getting frayed on one or two occassions, but I think we certainly deserved our win and our visitors were very complimentary about our performance. This is the first season that the 2 clubs have met in the leagues and I must be honest they are probably the best bunch of people that we have met. Their under 16′s were also at the club and provided everyone with a great evenings fun. I must also mention Taunton Colts who were in Cornwall on tour. Unfortuneately their game was cancelled at Camborne so they made thier way to Redruth and joined in the fun after the game. Credit to them, their behaviour was first class and I believe they had a great time.

So its on to the Play Off and Saturday’s game will kick off at 2:45pm. There is lots planned at the club and I really hope that people make the effort to come along. We have worked incredibly hard over the season to get to this point and all that work will mean nothing if we don’t succeed. Its going to be a massive game and the support that has been given to the players so far this year has been unreal. One more go and this is the biggest….get there, get shouting and we will see what we can do…

Congratulations to Richard Carroll on winning the Supporters Player of the Year Trophy. It was a close run thing with a couple of players very much on his heels….

Congratulations also to Sam Haper Miller on becoming the Supporter of the Year. Sam never misses a home game and in fact he has been away with us this year as well. He is there in all weathers and loves his rugby and this is just reward for him…

Unfortuneately our Colts could not make it 3 out of 3 trophy’s as they lost to Truro in the Under 18′s final on Sunday, but they have won the 17′s and 19′s finals so there is a little comfort there for Simon and his team. Knowing Simon as I do, he will be absolutely gutted at losing and nothing will console him. All I can say to him is a massive thank you for all the work he does and without him the club would be very much the worse for wear….

So people, Saturday 30th April kick off 2:45pm Redruth v Macclesfield for the right to be playing National 2 rugby next year …its all down to those 80+ minutes ….See you there………

Redruth 32 Hertford 13

Posted under Match Reports by admin on Sunday 24 April 2005 at 12:00 am

Redruth had to work hard for this win against an abrasive Hertford side. Hertford started strongly playing down the slope and put heavy pressure on the Redruth line but the strong defence held aided by a few handling errors. Redruth came back into the game and after twenty minutes Oscar Osir Osula linked well with Nathan Pedley scored a superb try converted by Bede Brown who shortly followed this with a penalty. Hertford hit back immediately when scrum half Matthew Reed caught the Reds napping by taking a quick tap penalty and went in for an excellent try converted by Neil Barella. Redruth scored again when Osula was given space to race down the wing to score in the scoreboard corner. Brown added a penalty at the end of the half to give the half time score Redruth 18 Hertford 7.

Early in the second half Hertford reduced the arrears with a penalty by Barella. Redruth added to the score after a run by Damian Cook who released the ball and after good interplay Mark Harper scored the try, Brown adding the extras. Barella kicked another penalty for Hertford and as the game drew to a close Paul Thirlby went in for a well worked try again converted by Brown.

The Reds Man of the Match award was presented to Dan Goodwin by David Pooley of Pooleys Chartered Accountants & Business Advisors.

Redruth under 14′s versus Winscombe

Posted under Under 14's by admin on Wednesday 20 April 2005 at 12:00 am

Winscombe had the ‘honour’ earlier in the season as being the first side for several games to defeat the Reds 14 points to 12. Last Sunday saw Winscombe travel to Redruth, keen to make it 2 out of 2.

Anyone who knows the under 14′s well knows they don’t take defeat well and spurred on by Tom Simmons return from injury the reds again showed why they are so dangerous.

All memory of the first game was put to one side as Tom Simmons lead his team onto a wet/slippery Recreation ground.

From the off Redruth put the pressure on Winscombe. New signing Lee Issacs showed outstanding pace to score the first of his hattricks of tries on the day, after 2 minutes. Winscombe held their own in the pack, but could find no way through the stout Reds defence. Sam Newman looked sharp and scored the Reds 2nd try, which Daniel Dunstan converted. Two minutes later Isaac

Managers Comments ……………

Posted under Director's Commentary by admin on Monday 18 April 2005 at 12:00 am

On Saturday we have a tricky home game against Hertford to overcome. Hertford have had a tremendous second half to the season, much similar to ours a couple of season’s back, and have rightfully moved up the table. They were very unlucky not to have beaten champions Barking at home, being robbed by the award of a very dubious penalty try. Our encounter just before Christmas was a very close affair with Hertford leading for the vast majority of the game. It was a game we deemed that we used our “Get out of jail card” on.

Before Saturday’s game, The Supporter’s Player of the Year will be presented with his trophy. What I can tell you is that the result was a very close affair with the odd vote separating the winner and runner up!

Congratulations to our Colts team who have won 2 out of the 3 finals they are contesting. The Under 17′s defeated Camborne a couple of weeks ago in a very tense game with Scott Jenkin scoring in the dying minutes to level the scores and Paul Texeira converting to win the match with the last kick of the game. Last Sunday the Under 19′s defeated Launceston at Launceston to win the Under 19′s trophy and tomorrow, at Hayle kick off 4:00pm I think, the Under 18′s Colts contest the CRFU Colts Cup Final against Truro. I keep saying this, but Simon Blake and his team of coaches and indeed the Colts Committee have done a magnificent job. They have a squad of 50+ players to chose from and having someone of the calibre of Simon at the helm is superb for the future of Redruth Rugby Club. There is no better organised Colts set up in the South West than ours and young lads who are now moving through the teen junior groups must be relishing the opportunity of working with such a dedicated person.

Also on Saturday, the Supporter of the Year will be presented with his/her trophy. There are so many dedicated supporters to choose from so the job is that much more difficult. Hopefully that presentation will take place at half time.

I have deliberately kept of the subject of the play off this week as we do have an important league game on Saturday but no doubt you all know that Macclesfield will be our opponents. Arrangements reference gate opening, bar opening etc etc will appear next week and be in the local press….

I am hoping for a bumper crowd again this week as the build up continues…makes lots of noise, show the opposition respect but above all enjoy the experience…..back next week if the nerves prevail!
