13th March 2005.Truro 0 Redruth 25

The Reds had another fine win on Sunday away to Truro. The 1st half was the best the team has played this season. The whole team played with passion, commitment and worked very well as a unit. The Reds dominated the scrum and the loose play from the off set, and Truro were pushed back which allowed Daniel Eathorne to score the first try. This was quickly followed by Kieran Young scoring another good try, Daniel Eathorne then scored the third try and James Trewren crashed through the Truro defence to score the fourth try of the match. Kieran Young then went over just before half time bringing the score to 25 -0.

The second half saw the Reds dominate throughout but Truro’s good defending prevented the Reds from scoring any more tries, the Reds organised defence stopped any chance of a Truro comeback. The final score was 25 – 0 to a delighted Reds team, coaches and parents as this was our first win over Truro.

In a second game played with seven changes to the team, the Reds drew 15 -15. Aaron Dockery opened the scoring with a great solo try, outsprinting the whole Truro team. Two more tries were scored by Boran Dickson and James Trewren.

The whole squad gave a 100% and both teams played with good sportmanship.
The Reds return to Truro on Sunday for the County Championships. We know the squad will give their best and we are hoping for a good day.

COUNTY FESTIVAL NEWS
Redruth Under 10′s Runner’s up.

The young Reds performed extremely well on Sunday at the County Festival at Truro. The team were drawn against Falmouth,Wadebridge and Newquay in their group. They beat Falmouth 10 -0 with Summer Radcliffe scoring her first try for the team and Kieran Young scoring the second try. Next up were Wadebridge with the same result with tries by Dirk Moodie and James Trewren. In the final group match Newquay were beaten 20 -0 with a hattrick for Dirk Moodie and another for Kieran Young. This put us into the final round robin with Launceston and Penzance.

The first game against Launceston was nervy with the Reds giving away a try early on, only to bounce straight back with a try by Kieran Young after a great break by Steve Trenoweth. At half time the score 5 – 5. Despite constant pressure in the second half , the Reds couldn’t find a way through and the game finished as a draw.

Penzance then beat Launceston 30 – 0, which meant that the Reds had to beat Penznace to win. Unfortunately despite a great display the team lost 15 – 0 to a very talented side and the Reds had to settle for silver this time.

Both Phil and myself were extremely proud of the way the team performed on and off the field and have no doubt this will not be our last final. The team have made great strides this year to become one of the best in the county and we will be back next year to go that one step further. It was also great to have all the parents and families giving their support, which was much appreciated by the team.

We would also like to say thank you to Truro’s Mini Section who put a great on a great festival and made us all very welcome.

On April 2nd and 3rd we will be playing in the Hayle Festival against teams from the South and London areas. The full squad will be playing and we look forward to seeing you there.

Redruth Under 15′s versus Avon

Posted under Under 15's by admin on Wednesday 23 March 2005 at 12:00 am

Redruth entertained touring side Avon at the weekend.

With key players out James Hitchens stepped in as captain. James led his side to a good 25-15 win, again a well drill Avon squad.

Jack Williams scoring 3 tries and Scott Murray scoring 1.

Well done to all of the lads who played, and it’s great to see Jack Williams is certainly back to his old self after stealing the show and picking up man of the match.

Further congratualations go to Josh Heath and Ashley Hosking for winning there County matches two weeks ago

Redruth under 11′s versus Wadebridge

Posted under Under 11's by admin on Tuesday 22 March 2005 at 12:00 am

On March 19th Redruth u11′s played Wadebridge u11′s.

The sides had met the met the week before at the Launston Mini/Junior Festival, Wadebridge were victorious on this occassion.

With the loss the week before still in their minds the young Reds were out to make things even.Straight from kick-off Redruth put Wadebridge under pressure, and soon found they were in control. The ball was freely passed from wing to wing and soon Redruth made a hole in the Wadebridge defence. At half time they found themselves 14-0 ahead.

In the second half the Red’s ran riot and ran out 42-0 victors!

I’d like to take this oppurtionity to thank all the players and coaches for all the time and effort they have put into the club THANKS!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Captain

Manager’s comments – Redruth v Havant

Posted under Match Reports by admin on Tuesday 22 March 2005 at 12:00 am

On a beautiful day, ideal for rugby football, Havant provided us with one of our most sternest of tests yet….but the guys put up a great defensive display and came away with the 4 points. North Walsham succumbed to a surprising defeat at Westcombe Park, our next opponents, and thus drop 7 points behind us with 3 games remaining. So its still all to play for and absolutely vital that we keep winning, not only to ensure we get a play off place, but to ensure it’s at home. Once again we were well supported with some 60 or so fans making the journey. When the guys ran onto the field it sounded as if there were 600 there! With Havant doing their best to counter the support it made a great atmosphere. In defeat, Havant were full of praise for the Reds and their performance, and I believe they will provide Barking with a good game next weekend, providing they can uphold the standards of their performance this last weekend.

This Saturday the Reds take on Penryn in the County Cup semi final. This is a rare opportunity to play fellow Cornish opposition. Kick off for this game will be 3:00pm.

Comgratulations to the Under 14′s on winning the County Cup yesterday by beating St Austell 22-5. The game was spoiled by the high wind which caused several handling errors thus disrupting any continuity in play. The Reds moved the ball where they could, and yet again Sam Newman caught my eye as a player with tremendous potential. Daniel Dunstan and Jack Greenaway also look good and it will be interesting to see how they develop over the next couple of years. I agreed totally with the decision to award Tom Barr with the Man of the Match. He had big boots to fill, with Tom Simmons out injured, and he did it manfully.

The Supporters Player of the Year voting forms are now available in the clubhouse. I’m sure you all have your favourite so get voting. The award will be made at a home match towards the end of the season..

The Supporters Club are arranging a trip to Southend for our last away game of the season (hopefully!) on April 9th. I know a number of people have already booked but there are some seats still available. The booking form is on the club notice board.

So a rest from league action this week which will allow a few batteries to be recharged. I would hope that our next league match at home against Westcombe Park will be as well attended as our last two games against North Walsham and Barking. I’ve said it before and I’ll keep saying it….get there and cheer the boys on it really does make a difference..we are almost on the brink of something very special..get there and be part of it!!

Back soon and have a great Easter…

Managers Comments – Redruth v Barking

Posted under Match Reports by admin on Wednesday 16 March 2005 at 12:00 am

Sorry this is a bit late this week, but I have been a bit busy with my other
job and meetings at the club so haven’t had time to put my thoughts onto
paper. Well Saturday’s game has come and gone and we now sit 3 points clear
of North Walsham in 2nd place in the league with 4 games still too play!
This weeks game at Havant will be difficult but its one we have to win to
maintain our push for a “play off” place at the end of the season. Havant
pulled off a great win at North Walsham last weekend which helped us after
our narrow defeat at home to Barking. I feel the game against Barking was
there for the taking but we did not capitalise in the dominating periods and
suffered at the death. BUT these things happen and we now have to show our
character and our undoubted passion and professionalism to get ourselves
back on track. Congratulations to Barking for keeping themselves in the game
and, by winning, virtually ensured themselves promotion to Division 2 next
season. The crowd was bigger than the one we had for North Walsham and the
support for the guys was first class. There is one point I would like to
make and that was the booing directed at the Barking kicker whilst he was
preparing and taking penalty kicks. This is totally unacceptable as I see it
and only acts as great motivation to the kicker to kick the goal. Lets not
stoop to the depths of soccer and see this type of behaviour become the norm
at rugby matches. Please be respectful!

Elsewhere, the Colts finally succumbed to a defeat against NEC Harlequins in
the quarter final of the National Colts Cup, but what an achievment to get
this far. Congratulations to all those involved.

This Sunday, the Under 14′s contest their County Cup Final against St
Austell at Newquay. I’m not sure of the kick off time but it will be a game
worth watching. This team have a tremendous cup record and have never been
defeated in a County Cup Final to date…that’s probably put the “kiss of
death” on that!!…but I would expect them to continue this brilliant
record.

The Supporters Player of the Year voting forms are now available in the
clubhouse so please get your votes in quickly. Closing date is the 5th April
I believe.

Over Easter we have Imperial Medics at the club for the traditional Good
Friday game and Penryn are visitors on Easter Saturday in the semi final of
CRFU Cup. Kick off for this game is 3:00pm

Well, Havant here we come, and its great to know a bus load of supporters
will accompany us. I am also led to believe there are plans to take a bus to
Southend…what brilliant support we have and I and the team and coaches
cannot thank you enough for your support and commitment…

Finally, as many of you may know I am very superstitous and ensure I go
through the same rituals week in week out, wear the same clothes etc etc and
always have an old manky watch with me with strap broken etc …well on
Saturday when I went to check the time leading up to kick off, the watch had
stopped! I said to Dave Rickettts “I hope this doesn’t mean our time is up
and our run is about to come to an end”…he dismissed it as usual…the
rest is history BUT I have a new battery installed and the watch is working
again!

talk to you soon….

David Penberthy…

Redruth Under 13′s lose out in semi final

Posted under Under 13's by admin on Tuesday 15 March 2005 at 12:00 am

Redruth met a well drilled Truro squad at Truro last Sunday, in the semi final round of the County Cup.

Being the first season of playing a knock out cup formula, Redruth like others before them, suffered meeting the cup favourites before the final.

Truro were the much better side on the day and ran out easy winners, although the young Reds gave it their all and did not disgrace themeselves with the effort they put in.

Liam Norwell took a nasty knock in the first half, but I am pleased to report it is only? muscle and ligament damage. Young Kieran Thomas looked good for the Reds on the day, and it was great to see young Aaron Penberthy on the pitch after a long lay off through injury and cricket duties with the County squad.

The Reds have massive potential at this age group, a bit of self beleif is the only ingredient missing.

Good luck to Truro in the final.
