Managers Comments – Redruth v Weston-Super-Mare

Posted under Match Reports by admin on Sunday 30 January 2005 at 12:00 am

Another good second half performance ensured we came away from this match with a maximum haul of 5 points and results elsewhere in the league did us a slight favour with Barking just edging it against Hertford but dropping a point for the second week running. North Walsham put away Tabard at home and still remain 7 in front of us, so it is still all to play for. Yesterday’s performance was a bit of a stop start affair to say the least with Weston players going down at regular intervals to try and disrupt our patterns. This succeeded quite well in the 1st half as we played rugby on their terms, however a good “chat” at half time resulted in a completely dominant performance in the second half scoring 5 unanswered tries. So that is 20 tries in the last 3 games, 19 out of a possible 20 points in January and, I am reliably informed, that this victory gave us our fourth consecutive double over our opponents throughout January, which is a club record. Next weeks game at Tabard will be a big challenge for us as we do not perform that well there, but if the guys can retain the focus they clearly have then things should go our way.

Last weeks meeting at Penzance went extremely well and our hope now is that a lot of what we discussed comes to fruition. I have no doubts that things will materialise and that both clubs will benefit immensely from the outcome. Dave Whitehead missed out yesterday with a finger injury but should be available this week. Richard Carroll made a succesful return albeit not 100% fit.

Finally this week, I saw the club’s Under 14′s play their cup quarter final against old rivals Truro on Sunday, and what a great game it was. It wasn’t the most skilfull I have ever seen but the passion and pride shown by the Reds was superb. No 8 Tom Simmons is a player to look out for and other top performances came from Ben Noyce (hope that’s the right spelling), Sam Newman, Josh Matavesi, Daniel Dunstan and Richard Keverne. Hopefully this group will go on to win the trophy and thus keep up their record of winning cups at every age level they have played at… well done boys and well done to coaches Nigel Thomas and Phil Olds.

So its off to Hertfordshire again at the weekend and I hope I am able to provide another positive write up next week….

Cheers for now…

Redruth 41 Weston-super-Mare 0

Posted under Match Reports by admin on Sunday 30 January 2005 at 12:00 am

Redruth produced another fine team performance but had to be patient when Weston defended well in the first half. They were restricted to a try taken after successive scrums on the Weston five-metre line before the ball was moved blind to Nathan Pedley who scrambled over to score. Bede Brown later added a penalty to give a half time score of Redruth 8 Weston-super-Mare 0.

The second half had hardly started when Craig Bonds raced over for a try converted by Brown. After more softening up by the forwards and several stoppages by Weston Mark Harper was driven over by the Reds pack to touch down. Young replacement prop Peter Joyce was the next to score, Brown converting. This was followed by tries for Nathan Pascoe and then Bede Brown who converted both to give Redruth a well-earned win. Weston managed to keep fifteen players on the park for a change but were no match for the strength and team work of the Redruth side. Good ground was made with the ball in hand driving the Weston players backward and when Weston did try to run the ball excellent tackling prevented any likelihood of a score.

The Reds Man of the Match award was presented to Mark Harper by Phil Homer on behalf of Doble Quality Foods.

I would like to send my best wishes to my brother,Simon Bonner who was
unfortunatley seriously injured during Redruth’s fine win over Launceston.
He was carried off with 10mins to go with a suspected broken leg, but
wouldn’t leave until the game finished to get checked out by the doctors.

His actual injury is still unknown as he awaits exploratory surgery, but his
kneecap is dis-connected. Would it be possible to wish him all the best from
his family, & I would like to thank his team mates who have supported him
through this tough time.

Chris Bonner

PS Can I also say a big thanks to the first teamers who coach the side &
give their support when they can, this shows true dedication to the future
of Redruth rugby.

Best wishes go to Simon, from all at Redruth Rugby Club wishes him a speedy recovery.

Managers Comments – Haywards Heath v Redruth

Another good performance on the road ensured our unbeaten run is extended to 10 games, but its the same old story as far as the league placings go, although Barking have dropped a point and we are now 9 behind them and 7 behind North Walsham. Both teams visit the Rec in March and these are sure to be titanic battles.. however there are still some tricky games before those, all of which we need to win if we are to continue to push for the top, For 60 minutes on Saturday we played some good rugby which gained good reviews from the home supporters. Dave Whitehead fitted in well and Duncan Murray had another solid game in midfield. Andy Hymans tackling was a revelation and Lewis Vinnicombe took his 3 tries exceptionally well. The front row had a good afternoon and completely destroyed the opposition whilst the back 5 played well. Young Peter Joyce (18) made his debut and the look on his face when awarded his league tie after the game spoke volumes for him. Just looking through the team yesterday 8 of the 19 have come through the ranks of juniors/colts at the club with Nathan Pedley coming through every age group from the Under 7′s!, not many sides can boast that in our league…Good to hear that Oggy Wright is back wearing the red shirt again, he played 40 minutes on Saturday for the seconds. Paul Edwards also made a welcome return after injury.

Our relationship with Penzance continues to flourish and Nigel and I are meeting Chief Exec David Jenkins and Head Coach Jim Mackay this week to discuss our current arrangements and, hopefully, put in place the mechanics to take the relationship even further. Its busy and exciting times at the club as we all endeavour to take the club to new heights…

Next Saturday Weston visit the Rec and they were one of only two clubs to win at the Rec last year. We won there earlier in the season and look forward to a good battle on Saturday…that’s it for now, hopefully be back next week…

Redruth Under 14′s travel to Liskeard

Posted under Under 14's by admin on Sunday 23 January 2005 at 12:00 am

Redruth travelled to Liskeard with their intentions firmly placed on next weeks cup clash with Truro.

Liskeard were suffer from the Christmas lay off, not having played a game for some 5-6 weeks.

Redruth dominated the game from the start, scoring after 2 minutes. Liskeard for their part never gave up, but the Reds were in top form on a muddy holding surface.

Turning around with a 30 point advantage Redruth seemed to take the foot off the power, Liskeard started to look much more into the game and tried their hardess to find a way through the Reds defence.

Switching players into differnt positions and ensuring everyone had a game the Reds ran out 50 point to nil winners.

Redruth face Truro at the Recreation ground next Sunday in the Cornwall Cup….this should be a thriller.
