Managers comments – The Half Way Point….

Posted under Match Reports by admin on Thursday 30 December 2004 at 12:00 am

The first half of the season has been pleasing…with only 2 defeats in 13
outings. Our home record remains intact and our growing self belief augers
well for the second half of the season. There have have been many good
performances and a few not quite so good, but all teams have off days. Our
plans were severely dented with the injury to Mark Scrivener back in
October. Mark will miss the whole of the season but is confident of being
back next year. Dan Goodwin has settled well and Richard Carroll continues
to impress both on and off the field. Nigel Hambly has done an outstanding
job as Head Coach and was justly rewarded by being asked to coach the
Cornwall Development team that played Penzance just prior to Christmas. So
all looks good so far…

The second half of the season promises to be an interesting one with all
five of the top teams within striking distance of each other. I suppose out
of all the teams we had the toughest shout first time round playing all four
of our rivals away from home, comimg away with a win, draw and 2 losses. Now
that we have them at home we must capitalise on home advantage and win those
games…but there are a few potential banana skins on the way…..First up
we have Old Pats and this will be a hard game for us as we have never won
there. This is followed by a huge game at home against Lydney. They will be
all out for revenge as they do not get beaten on their home patch too often,
we did that and they will want to inflict a similar result on us down
here… Haywards Heath won’t be easy and then its Weston at home. My wish
for January would be a clean sweep with bonus points in at least a couple of
the games…we shall see! Hopefully the guys have had a couple of weeks rest
and are now raring to go. I can’t believe that half the season is over
already. It doesn’t seem a couple of weeks ago that we were winning at
Westcombe Park in 30 degrees of heat. During February I will miss the Dings
home fixture and the Reading away fixture as I am in South Africa on
holiday. My son is playing cricket there for 2 weeks so I’ll be thinking of
everyone shivering in the February cold ….hopefully the weather will be
slightly warmer there! …

Back with more banter after the Old Pats game….

Managers Comments – Redruth v Southend

Posted under Match Reports by admin on Monday 20 December 2004 at 12:00 am

Well half way point of the season and I suppose if you had asked me at the outset if I would be happy with a record that we have I would of said “Yes”. However, I still look back on the 1st half of the season and looked at what might of been. What if that try was allowed at Barking, what if we had held out for another 30 seconds at North Walsham…well the answer is that we could of been at the top of the table now. Lets not wallow in what could of been…the guys have worked tremendously hard and have given their all in the 1st half of the season. It has not been easy and we have been disrupted by injuries. The 2nd half of the season sees all the leading pack having to visit the Rec and these are sure to be evenly contested matches. The programme after Xmas kicks off with a visit to Old Pats, a place where we have not won but if we are to maintain our push for the top we have to break that duck on the 8th. Our newly found relationship with Penzance and Launceston has been well publicised, but its a relationship that I am keen to ensure progresses. The benefits for all concerned are immense and if that means improved rugby here we must all realise and understand the reasons for pursuing it. Duncan “Red” Murray comes to us on loan and has a very good rugby CV, Launceston have helped us by loaning Rhys Gosling and Richard Hoskins and we have helped clubs in Cornwall with loan signings…long may it continue.

Happy Christmas and New Year

Redruth 11 Southend 0

Posted under Match Reports by admin on Sunday 19 December 2004 at 12:00 am

The game was played in driving drizzle and both teams handled the slippery conditions well. The only scoring was in the first half with the Reds playing down the slope against the wind. Much of the opening play was in the Southend half and after 5 minutes Bede Brown opened the scoring for Redruth with a penalty. Shortly after Southend had possibly their only scoring chance when Simon Hoult narrowly missed a penalty. After more pressure and driving play by Redruth, Brown kicked another penalty. Southend used the wind to mount a few attacks on the Redruth line but the defence soon repulsed these. As the half progressed the ball was moved out to centre Duncan Murray, on loan from Penzance. Murray put in a well-weighted kick for Lewis Vinnecombe to chase and he cleverly hacked the ball on to touch down the only try of the game.

In the second half the Reds used the wind to keep much of the play in the Southend half but were unable to increase their lead. Southend defended stoutly and looked a stronger side than their league position shows. As in the first half when Southend attacked, the Redruth defence looked in little danger of cracking. Once again the Reds played for each other with new man Murray slotting in well and showing some clever touches with the ball. Damian Cook made his presence felt on return from injury. John Navin, Richard Carroll and Dan Goodwin also showed well in the forwards.

The Reds Man of the Match award was presented to Dan Goodwin by Nicola Richards and Lawrence Pavey on behalf of Fairfield Real Estate Ltd.

Managers Comments – Hertford v Redruth

Posted under Match Reports by admin on Monday 13 December 2004 at 12:00 am

Well, it was a close run thing but eventually we found our scoring touch and secured a good away win at Hertford. I suppose it was a case of using our “Get out of jail card” as with 10 minutes to go we were trailing by 11-3 and I had awful thoughts of Dings revisited. However, the guys showed good character and scored 2 tries to make the long trip home enjoyable. The teams around us all secured bonus points so we are now 4 points adrift of 3rd placed Lydney, who visit Dings this weekend, and 10 points behind the leaders. It’s going to take a big effort now to claw this back, but we are well aware of whats happening here and are doing all we can to improve the situation. Saturday’s game against Southend will be tricky as they come to us on the back of 3 straight wins, however we go into the game on the back of 6 straight wins and hopefully will equal our good run last year of 7 straight wins. I’m sure there are “banana skins” along the way for all of the leading pack, we just have to be in a position to take adavantage of any slip ups. Good news on Mark Scrivener as he begins his rehab following his serious knee injury in October. Mark has been told that he can leave off his knee brace and start gentle exercise such as swimming and cycling. This is great news for Mark and the club and we all hope that his recovery continues and we see him back in the red shirt soon. On Tuesday a Cornwall Development team takes on a Penzance XV at the Mennaye Fields. We have a number of representatives in the side and Head Coach Nigel Hambly coaches the team. Good luck to all those involved…Finally as this is the last game before Xmas, can I take the opportunity to wish everyone a very Happy Christmas a Prosperous New Year and thank you all for the wonderful support you have given me, the coaches and most importantly the players over the past 12 months…here’s to the next 12….

Managers Comments – Redruth v Old Patesians

Posted under Match Reports by admin on Tuesday 7 December 2004 at 12:00 am

I suppose 4 points is better than none, but we are making life more difficult for ourselves by missing out on opportunities to secure bonus points when we are clearly in a position to get them. But that’s life and we have to get on with it…our 5th win on the trot sees us still in 4th position and now have a hard game away to Hertford on Saturday. Hertford have a reasonable home record so it won’t be easy going there…Over Christmas we have the usual Boxing Day affair with Camborne and we have then arranged a friendly against Exeter Chiefs on Sunday 2nd January. On the 3rd January it is possible that we will be playing Truro in the CRFU Senior Cup…so its a feast of rugby at Redruth through the festive season. Back to Saturday and it was very worrying when Mark Harper got hurt, but hopefully it was just a twinge and he will be available for this week. Nathan Pedley also took a knock and this may rule him out…hopefully not. As far as everyone else goes, things look good. I spoke with Mark Scrivener today and he is progressing well, but highly unlikely to play again this season…but is very keen and looking forward to next year..which is good news for us..Here’s to a good win on Saturday……

David
