Nigel Hambly has strengthened the Redruth squad by signing hooker James
Owen on a short-term deal after Penzance-Newlyn released him from his contract. He will provide competition in the key position as injured Mark Harper is still some way short of fitness.

The squad is: Craig Bonds, Ian Hambly, Lewis Vinnecombe, Bede Brown, Paul Thirlby, Nathan Pedley, Mark Scrivener, Mark Richards, Ewen Cowie, Darren Jacques, Sam Harrison, James Owen, Neil Douch, Sam Heard, Damian Cook, Richard Carroll, John Navin, James Lancaster and Nathan Pascoe.

Managers Comments – Redruth v Berry Hill

This weeks Comments…

After the slightly disappointing performance against Havant, Saturday’s game couldn’t come quick enough. Everybody in the camp knew they could of performed better and saw this game as the opportunity to prove it. Alas it was not to be! Its ironic that Berry Hill were originally eliminated from the competition after losing at Newton Abbott. However, Newton Abbott fielded an unregistered player and were disqualified…Berry Hill were then re-instated. My own views on their failure to put out a side are not favourable. This was the 1st Round of the premier cup competition in the country and there are sides who’d do anything to compete in it. The consequences for Berry Hill are that they will not be permitted to compete in any Cup competition next year. For us it was a valuable loss of match day revenue and more importanly a Saturday, so early in the season, without a game. This weekend we have a very difficult game at Barking and needed a game to ensure we developed our game plans in match situations.

Our reward for being awarded the tie is a home game against Worthing who defeated London Scottish. Worthing a currently in 2nd place in London 1 and will obviously be contenders to enter National 3 South next year. The draw for the 3rd round sees the winner of our tie being at home against National 2 outfit Waterloo or National 3 North side Rugby Lions. This game will be played on October 16th. As if that wasn’t enough, the RFU have decided to make the 4th Round draw as well!!! Here we go:- The winner of the Round 3 game between either Redruth/Worthing or Waterloo/Rugby Lions will be away to either Richmond/Hertford or Kendal/Reading…

I’m sure we’ll have a big crowd on Saturday week and you can rest assured that the guys will be keen to put on a good performance, however this Saturday’s game at Barking is vitally important. We see Barking as being one of the favourites for the league and if we are to be there with them, a positive performance and result is absolutely vital.

Redruth 18 Havant 7

The Reds dominated the opening period and were awarded two early penalties which Mark Scrivener narrowly missed in the strong wind. The first hitting the post and Redruth were near to scoring only to lose the ball forward near the line. Richard Carroll having made some strong early runs was yellow carded after twelve minutes and Redruth did well to withstand the pressure from Havant during his absence. Shortly after Carroll

Managers Comments – Redruth v Westcombe Park

Posted under Match Reports by admin on Monday 6 September 2004 at 12:00 am

Our win at Westcombe Park gave us the sort of start that we had hoped for. Players and coaches have worked hard in pre season and all this hard work came to fruition on Saturday…BUT…lets not get carried away! its the 1st game of the season and over the next 4 weeks we have 2 very hard games away from home against Barking and North Walsham who will be there or thereabouts at the top of the table come next April. Many expect us to be promotion candidates, but lets wait until Christmas time and see where we are at that stage. Away wins are great to get and to have gained maximum points was great…needless to say the trip back to Cornwall was entertaining….

New signings Mark Scrivenor, Richard Carroll, Julian Hosking and Darren Jacques did well. Scriv’s was in great form with the boot kicking 6 out of 7. Nathan Pedley enjoyed his return to the statrting line up with 2 very well taken tries. This week we have Havant who will be looking to bounce back from their defeat at Barking. There website report says they competed well for an hour and then dropped off the pace…lets see how they fair at the Rec! North Walsham had a good win at Southend who have recruited strongly this summer. Surprise results I suppose were Dings win at Od Pats and Weston’s win at Haywards Heath…

The Powergen Cup draw has favoured us in both rounds 1 and 2 with Newton Abbott here on the 18th, and providing we win that one, we then have either London Scottish or Worthing at home on the 2nd October….
