REDRUTH UNDER 13′s RETAIN COUNTY TITLE

Posted under Under 13's by admin on Monday 29 March 2004 at 12:00 am

Redruth RFC under 13′s retain the County Championship for the fifth time.
After a very polish display and a final score of 31-nil, Redruth won the
County title for the fifth time against St Austell, in front of a large
crowd at Wadebridge Rugby Club.

Redruth started well and after 2 minutes were ahead with a Ben Noyce try. Six minutes later Adam Lewarne touched down under the posts. St Austell were very strong in the pack, but the Reds used the superior technical ability to give their back room to score the tries. Richard Kevern scored the third first half try, converting two out of the three to make the half time score 19-nil.

St Austell attacked hard in the second half but found the “fortress” defence was not going to buckle. Two second half tries from inside centre Sam Newman and a conversion from Kevern saw the final whistle score of 31-nil. Many thanks go to Wadebridge RFC especially the club room staff who made all the player and their families most welcome.

Skinners Brewery Cornwall Cup – Redruth 77 Hayle 7

Posted under Match Reports by admin on Sunday 28 March 2004 at 12:00 am

Redruth had too much pace for the plucky Hayle side. The damage was done in the first half when Redruth ran in 49 unanswered points. Scott Martin had a 100% record with the boot converting the seven first half tries and four in the second half. Paul Thirlby opened the scoring before Nick Croker was driven over by the pack. Shortly after the ball squirted out of a Hayle scrum James Lancaster picked up and Craig Bonds touched down. Marek Churcher scored the next try before a break by Bede Brown lead to a try for Andy Hymens on his return to first team rugby. Ian Hambly had a strong run down the touch line for Brown to score and Brown quickly added a second after a good passing move.

Hayle opened the second half strongly and retained the ball to keep Redruth in their own half for nearly fifteen minutes before a rare break out lead to a try for Lewis Vinnecombe., Hayle refused to take kicks at goal and from a short penalty Luke Ellis was eventually driven over for a try converted by Paul Lello. Redruth fitness told in the last twenty minutes when first Bede Brown completed his hat trick having had a great afternoon revelling in the space he doesn

UNDER 10s reach their first Final

The Reds went to Penryn for their festival, meeting another 11 teams. With a rather depleted side.

The weather stayed dry, it was very windy and after all that rain was very muddy
The Reds played Launceston and Truro in there first group just losing to both. But then going on to the plate compotition here meeting St Austell and after a hard fought game. Ending 5 points to 5. The game being decided on the toss of a coin, as the Reds scored first, they had the call. Which they won!

Meeting the hosts Penryn in the final. who just had the advantage and won 15/0

WELL PLAYED EVERYBODY!!! Thanks to the organisers for a great day.

UNDER 14′S BATTLE HARD IN COUNTY FINAL

Posted under Under 14's by admin on Thursday 25 March 2004 at 12:00 am

I am waiting for a full report but I travelled to St Austell to watch the final of the under 14′s between Redruth and Truro. The final score was 12-nil to Truro, but this has to be put in context. Tony Strick Head Coach, informs me that in their last 2 meeting Truro have put nearly 100 points past the Reds. But this final must be the platform these young Reds need to go away and build on. There was no man of the match, this was a gutsy 1 to 15-16-17-18-19-20etc performance. Adam Harris had a great game, the more he was hit the quicker he got up, in the end the poundings taking their toll and his replacement Ashley Hosking continued where he left off. Redruth were dealt a blow when influental pack man Levi Rogers was sin binned. The County have to look at this law for 2 reasons. He was sent off for 10 minutes the same as a full senior match even when the match is over 2 x 30 minute periods. Secondly other sports have infringment penalties that are not used in the junior ranks. Levi’s only sin was his determination, and he was penalised for that?

Truro were the worthy winners on the day as they had the ‘edge’ Redruth will go away knowing the gap in skill is closing with their closest rivals, well done Redruth Under 14′s, you did your club and yourselves proud.

Redruth 30 Southend 12

Posted under Match Reports by admin on Sunday 21 March 2004 at 12:00 am

Redruth put on another good performance and were soon on the scoreboard when Mark Richards made a terrific break from his own half this was moved on to Lewis Vinnecombe who kicked ahead and touched down in Hellfire corner. Scott Martin added the extras, a difficult kick in the windy conditions. The second try came after driving play by the forwards, the ball was released and Paul Thirlby made a good break before hacking on for Neil Corin to touch down the try. Ten minutes later The Southend wing, James Wagstaff, was yellow carded and Martin kicked the penalty to bring the score to Redruth 15 Southend 0, which it remained at half time.

Southend made changes just after the break, but it was Redruth who extended their lead with another Martin penalty mid way through the half. Shortly after Mark Richards was yellow carded and during his time off James Wagstaff made some amends for his early rest and scored Southends first try. This was followed by a strong run from centre Mac Smith who touched down for Chris Green to convert and bring Southend within six points of Redruth. However Redruth finished strongly when first replacement Simon Griffiths touched down and then almost on time Paul Thirlby took the ball in the Redruth 22, outpaced the Southend defence to score an excellent try before adding the extras himself.

Sam Heard was presented with the Reds
