Redruth were well on top for seventy minutes of this game creating scoring opportunities and defending well when required. The game was only four minutes old when Lewis Vinnecombe scored the first try. Redruth were quicker on the ball with James Lancaster prominent in his unaccustomed position of number eight but had to settle for a penalty by Scott Martin before Craig Bonds made a splendid break and Paul Thirlby ended the move with a try. Neil Corin and John Navin were well in control of the lineouts. Near the end of the first half a poor clearance gave North Walsham a scoring chance and winger Andy Thorpe went over for a try giving the half time score Redruth 13 North Walsham 5.

Soon after the restart Bede Brown scored a try after strong runs from James Lancaster and Paul Thirlby this was followed by another Martin penalty. Matt Holmes kicked a penalty for North Walsham almost immediately, but the Reds were on a roll and Paul Thirlby scored his second try, which Martin converted. Redruth were looking good for a win and although defending for some time seemed to be holding out when Jon Wright was awarded a yellow card for a technical infringement. North Walsham kicked for touch and from the resulting lineout Liam Harrison went over for a try, Holmes adding the extras. Injury time was approaching and Redruth were attacking strongly in the North Walsham 22 and looked to be about to score again when Simon Sinclair intercepted and ran the length of the field to score under the posts, Holmes again adding the extras. North Walsham now had their tails up and scented victory when Liam Harrison went in for his second try, Holmes to the relief of the home supporters missed the conversion to give Redruth the narrowest of wins but well deserved.

James Lancaster was presented with the Reds

REDRUTH UNDER 13′s POWER TO SEMI FINALS

Posted under Under 13's by admin on Monday 12 January 2004 at 12:00 am

Redruth 59 Bude 0.

Putting together one of their finest match performances Redruth Under 13′s move through to the semi finals of the County Cup. Having never played Bude before the young Reds showed little respect for their visitor’s reputation. First half tries from Tom Barr, Tom Simmons(2), Billy Lane, Sam Newman and Richard Kevern saw the Reds take a complete hold of this cup tie. Kevern converting twice and added a penalty for a turn-a-round score of 37-nil. Not to take anything away from Bude, the Reds just didn’t give them room to play, Bude tried to play their own game but were stopped repeatedly and forced to defend for most of the match. Back from injury Jimmy Steven had a big game. Tom Simmons was as inspirational as ever and Matt Hopley had another great game in the second row spot he is making his. The second half try by Sam Newman will take some beating for try of the season and overall he just pinched man of the match from the other 21 players in the squad. Further second half tries from Jimmy Stevens, Billy Lane and Tom Simmons, one conversion from Kevern saw the Reds win by 59-nil.
