REDRUTH UNDER 12′s TAKE BATH FESTIVAL CROWN TO TOP A FANTASTIC RUGBY SEASON.

Redruth under 12′s went to Bath with a few doubts due to a few weeks on niggley injuries and fitness doubts. Travelling the day before the festival proved successful last year so the young Reds made an early start on Saturday morning. Arriving in Bath on the Saturday gave the lads a chance to watch Bath take on Saracens in the Parker Pen Cup(Bath winning). Sunday saw the Reds drawn against Avon, Winchester and Bath in the group stage of the competition.

Redruth started slow with a 15-nil win over Avon with 3 first half tries from William Pearce, Jimmy Stevens and Richard Keverne. Game 2 saw Matt Hopley open for the Reds after 2 minutes followed a minute later by Will Pearce and just before the break by Matt Hopley. The coaching staff made many half time changes preserving the strength of the squad for later games. Jimmy Steven added a second half try for a 20-nil full time scoreline. Last of the group games saw the Reds face Bath. Long has gone the Bath myth with this Reds squad and the coasted to a 10-nil half time lead with tries from team captain Tom Simmons in the first minute followed 4 minutes later with a try from Adam Lewarne. Team changes saw all the players getting a game. Bath showed great determination in the second half, but were unable to cross the secure Reds line.

The semi final saw the Reds face old advisories Ivybridge. After one of the toughest games of the season the score was drawn at full time, with the Reds going through to the final on a better try count back. It

Redruth 39 Launceston 20

Redruth proved worthy winners of the Cornwall Cup with a 100 % team effort in playing their best rugby of the season.

Mark Scrivener kicked two penalties in the first ten minutes as Redruth playing up the slope kept Launceston on the defensive for much of the opening period with strong tackling and good attacking play. However Launceston when they did get in the Redruth half used their strong pack to advantage scoring a try, driving from the lineout in the corner after 30 minutes. Scrivener kicked two more penalties before Launceston from another driving lineout forced Redruth to yield a penalty try in injury time, Jon Hill kicking the easy conversion to bring the scores level at half-time 12

Redruth got off to a cracking start with 19 points in the first ten minutes. Glen Cooper opened with a try from the lineout in Hellfire corner. Shortly after from a quick penalty, John Navin made a break backed up by Bede Brown who moved the ball on to Steve Larkins to run in under the posts. Mark Scrivener converting. The fine Redruth play continued when Mark Richards broke from the back of the scrum. The play looked to have broken down but fine ball handling lead to the ball moving along the line for Lewis Vinnecombe to race in for the third try Scrivener again adding the extras. Redruth seemed to ease off and Weston came back into the game when powerful centre TJ Madamombe went in for a try. The game was still only fifteen minutes old when Redruth
