REDRUTH COME OUT ON TOP AGAINST DEVONPORT

Posted under Under 12's by admin on Sunday 26 January 2003 at 12:00 am

All the hard days and evening training sessions were called upon for the
toughest fixture in the Redruth under12′s season when they entertained
Davenport Services at the Recreation Ground. This match was rescheduled from
the previous week because of frost. Devonport were keen to keep this
fixture, as they are one of Devon’s premiere teams and as Redruth 12′s find
quality opponents hard to find. This fixture was never going to be pretty
and Redruths large squad was weakened with sickness of 4 key players. After
5 minutes the referee called both sides together as some of the play was on
the boundaries of being dangerous. Four minutes later Devonport were a man
down when there number 5 was “sin binned”. At the turn around there was no
score. Redruth started the second half better, winning many scrums against
the head. Darting runs from Richard Kevern were opening the Devonport
defence, but breakdowns due to handling errors cost Redruth. Against the run
of play Devonport broke free and would have been ahead, but again a handling
error on the line saw Redruth clear their lines. Mid way through the second
half Kevern had to leave the field, Sam Newman switched to scrum half and
Tom Simmons moved to inside centre. Simmons made many breaks but the stout
Devonport defence would deny the Reds a try. The game ended in a draw.
In the second fixture Redruth and the Service made changes. An under-par Ryan Thomas came on as scrum half for the Reds. Newman moved out to the wing. After 2 minutes the ball was fed to Newman who found a gap for the Reds first try. Four minute later Redruth were 14 points in front following a try by Jack Greenaway converted by Craig Johnson. Redruth started the second half well, with Jimmy Stevens making great contributions in the pack. Powerhouse forward Jack Greening scored the third try for the Reds and 4 minutes later Redruth “Man of the Match” Tom Simmons added another. Johnson converting one and missing the last. Redruth have a lot of positives to take away from this game, although on a negative side some of the parents behaviour left a lot to be desired. Parents should get their heads around the fact that the children are playing a game they love. The win at all cost debate is no debate. The badgering of referees has to stop. It is difficult enough to control 24 children without having a “mouthy” parent shout abuse from the touch-line, it does the game no good and shows the limited knowledge some have for the game. Rugby is a tough physical game that when played well is safe, lets keep it that way.
