Redruth 39 Havant 16

Posted under Match Reports by admin on Sunday 29 September 2002 at 12:00 am

Before the match a presentation was made by Bill Bishop to Andy Hawken for making his 200th League appearance in the League match at Lydney.

This was an entertaining match for the Redruth faithful and a welcome league win. Redruth began attacking up the slope but it was Havant who drew first blood after eleven minutes when Nick Allica scored a try in hellfire corner. Redruth hit back immediately from the restart with Steve Larkins scoring in the scoreboard corner, Bede Brown converting and adding a penalty a few minutes later. This was followed by a try for Mark Richards. As the half was drawing to a close, Allica kicked a penalty for Havant, Mark Richards scored his second try for Redruth converted by Brown. Anton Petzer finished the half with a try for Havant to take the halftime score to Redruth 22 Havant 13.

Nick Edyvean was replaced by Jason Pengilly at halftime. Both sides had periods of pressure before Brown kicked another penalty, Allica scoring one for Havant. Redruth were now looking stronger and swarming over any attacking moves by Havant. John Navin was taking some good ball in the lineout, and from one lineout the ball was moved out, Brown breaking through and James Lancaster backing up to score the try, Brown converting. Lancaster finished the match with another try, Brown adding the extras.

Bede Brown was presented with the Man of the Match award by Steve Abbot

Powergen Cup Result – Penryn 13 Redruth 28

Posted under Match Reports by admin on Sunday 22 September 2002 at 12:00 am

Redruth made hard work of this win in a match which never really flowed due to errors and a number of off the ball incidents leading to yellow cards for both sides.

Redruth kicked off down the slope and soon put Penryn under pressure leading to a penalty kicked by Bede Brown. A catch and drive from a lineout near the Penryn line led to Sam Harrison being driven over for a try, Brown converting. Brown increased the lead with another penalty before Penryn kicked their penalty. During the half Penryn were awarded two yellow cards and Redruth one. Redruth had to withstand some pressure from Penryn and good defence kept the line intact. The failure to kick well out of hand added to this pressure. Half-time Penryn 3 Redruth 11.

Nathan Pedley was still in the sin bin at the start of the second half and no sooner was he back on then Andy Hawken went to the bin for pulling down the jumper in the lineout. The Redruth defence was disorganised during this period and Penryn went over for a try. Steve Larkins came on for Nathan Pedley and his line kicking helped keep Penryn in their half for long periods. Brown scored another penalty. Neil Douch and John Court replaced Adam Flide and Sam Heard. Redruth were attacking but poor finishing passes kept them from scoring. Bede Brown made a break and James Lancaster took the scoring pass, Brown converting. In a good attacking move Penryn moved the ball wide for the winger to run round Larkins and score in the corner. Redruth finished of with a fine try for Lewis Vinnecombe after John Court dived on a loose ball and this was fed out to the wing, Brown

Rosslyn Park started off strongly, attacking into Hellfire Corner they sucked in the Redruth defence moved the ball wide for Richard Jackson to score the try. Shortly after Park No 9, Michael Friday was shown the yellow card. Although Park continued to attack they were unable to score again until after 20 minutes they were awarded a penalty and the kick was put into Hellfire Corner, from the lineout the pack drove Ben Thurlow over for a try. Redruth came back into the game and Nathan Pedley went over for a try in the scoreboard corner. After a sustained period of pressure Park scored their third try Lee Gibson going over between the posts Stuart Hibbert converting. Redruth hit back immediately with Craig Bonds going over for a try. Half-time score Redruth 10 Rosslyn Park 17.

Redruth 13 Blackheath 27

Posted under Match Reports by admin on Sunday 1 September 2002 at 12:00 am

Redruth’s loyal supporters turned out to watch the new look Redruth side and were treated to an entertaining match but not the result they wished. Redruth played towards Hellfire corner in the first half Bede Brown missing a penalty attempt in the first minute. The crowd was on its feet a few minutes later thinking that Nick Edyvean had scored after completing an attack from within the Redruth half only to be called back for a penalty awarded to Blackheath after a late tackle. Lewis Vinnecombe also went close to scoring but put a foot in touch. Bede Brown kicked two penalties and Redruth looked to be ending the half with a 6 point lead. Unfortunately Blackheath had other ideas They had mounted a number of attacks during the half but the solid Reds defence had kept them from scoring. On the 40 minute mark Blackheath were awarded a penalty and chose to kick into the scoreboard corner, from the resulting lineout Alex Natera was driven for a try. Half-time score Redruth 6 Blackheath 5.

Five minutes into the second half Charlie Abban for Blackheath showed his pace and scored the first of his tries converted by Chris Brain. Ten minutes later James Lancaster made a strong run from the halfway and passed to Nathan Pedley who scrambled over for a try converted by Bede Brown putting Redruth back into the lead again. Blackheath who made full use of their big fast forwards came back again with a second try for winger Abban. Brain missed the conversion but shortly after kicked a penalty. Redruth were not giving up but, when attacking, a poor pass was picked up by Abban to race in for his hat-trick, Brain converting to take the final score to Redruth 13 Blackheath 27.

Blackheath were too powerful for Redruth on the day and the Reds can be positive about the forthcoming season with their blend of youth and experience.
