Redruth 22 – Penzance-Newlyn 76
Penzance put on a sparkling show of fast, attacking, three quarter play, in front of the largest home crowd at Redruth for some years, showing that they are a team worthy of promotion.
Redruth opened the scoring playing down the slope with a try for Scott Withecombe. Nat Saumi replied with a penalty for Penzance and tries quickly followed for Victor Olonga, Saumi and Olonga again, Saumi converting two. John Navin replaced James Lancaster for a blood injury and scored a try after a Redruth forward drive. Further tries were scored by Penzance from Marc Richards, Lakalaka Waqanivere 2 and James Hawken, Saumi converting all for to take the half-time score to 10 – 50.
The Redruth side showed plenty of character by opening the second half with a try for Craig Bonds, Steve Larkins adding the extras, Ben Hilton then scored for Penzance, Saumi converting, Marc Richards followed with his second and Waqanivere scored his third, Saumi again converting, before Neil Douch touched down Redruth’s fourth try. Redruth never gave up and were attacking at the finish when Richard Newton intercepted deep in the Penzance half and ran in the final try, Saumi converting.
