Penzance put on a sparkling show of fast, attacking, three quarter play, in front of the largest home crowd at Redruth for some years, showing that they are a team worthy of promotion.

Redruth opened the scoring playing down the slope with a try for Scott Withecombe. Nat Saumi replied with a penalty for Penzance and tries quickly followed for Victor Olonga, Saumi and Olonga again, Saumi converting two. John Navin replaced James Lancaster for a blood injury and scored a try after a Redruth forward drive. Further tries were scored by Penzance from Marc Richards, Lakalaka Waqanivere 2 and James Hawken, Saumi converting all for to take the half-time score to 10 – 50.

The Redruth side showed plenty of character by opening the second half with a try for Craig Bonds, Steve Larkins adding the extras, Ben Hilton then scored for Penzance, Saumi converting, Marc Richards followed with his second and Waqanivere scored his third, Saumi again converting, before Neil Douch touched down Redruth’s fourth try. Redruth never gave up and were attacking at the finish when Richard Newton intercepted deep in the Penzance half and ran in the final try, Saumi converting.

The Redruth Man of the Match, selected by the Cornish Fixings Co., was Stuart Turnbull.

Redruth 22 – Lydney 24

Posted under Match Reports by admin on Thursday 7 March 2002 at 12:00 am

Lydney opened the scoring with a try after three minutes scored and converted by Julian Hill. Redruth hit back ten minutes later with try for John Arnold after Luke Collins had taken a clean line out ball and the forwards drove over the line. This was shortly followed by a try for Steve Larkins which he converted to give the Reds the lead for the only time in the match. Lydney scored tries around the half hour mark by Paul Price and Charlie Vine, one converted by Julian Hill to take the score to 12 – 19.

In the second half Redruth created chances but were unable to score until late on. Lee Johnson increased the lead for Lydney with a try to give Redruth a mountain to climb. The forwards battled away manfully and in the final ten minutes Redruth were rewarded with another try for Steve Larkins on his one hundredth first team appearance. Redruth tried hard to score again and managed a try by Scott Withecombe on the final whistle, Larkins was unable to convert. In this entertaining game the Redruth forwards were in great form but the back line were not as sure with their passing and decision making as in recent games and made too many basic errors, which ultimately cost them the match.

Redruth Man of the Match selected by Dave Martin was Luke Collins
