The team were lead out by John Navin for his 101st First Team appearance. A minute’s silence was held before kick off in memory of Fred Bray a club stalwart of the 1950′s. The match started in a promising manner for Redruth with a fine try for Craig Bonds converted by Steve Larkins, thereafter the first half was very much a stop start affair neither side capitalising on attacking moves through a number of errors. Steve Larkins kicked a penalty and Dave Gilmore one for Barking. Neil Douch went off injured after 22 minutes and was replaced by Adam Flide. Half-time score Redruth 10 Barking 3.
The second half was much better for Redruth and they dominated, through the forwards, for long periods. Steve Larkins scored another penalty before Craig Bonds scored his second try, Larkins converting. After a minor scuffle the Barking hooker, Francis Ambrose and Redruth’s Scott Withecombe were yellow carded. During this period Bonds went over to complete his hat-trick, Larkins getting the extras. All the replacements were used for both sides and in the final minutes Barking attacked the Redruth line but were unable to break through the defence. This was a game the Reds needed to win and although not as fluid in attack as in recent home games the defence held and Redruth were worthy winners.
Redruth Man of the Match, selected by the sponsors ‘Cornwall Glass & Glazing’, was Craig Bonds.

This was a game that Redruth gave away with the aid of the Referee in the dying seconds. Redruth started the game with a penalty by Steve Larkins, returning to the side after injury followed by a try for Craig Bonds converted by Larkins. Mid way through the half Old Patesians scored a penalty by Scott Pollok. Late in the half Redruth were on the attack and a try for Ian Veal looked certain but he was held up over the line. From the resulting play Old Pats hacked on for a breakaway try scored by Ralph Tucker. Redruth were again committed to attack and lost the ball a kick ahead and a horrible bounce for the defence allowed Scott Pollok in for a try which he converted to give Old Patesians a half-time lead of 15 – 10.
Redruth started the second half with two fine tries Steve Larkins ran through the defence and passed on to Sheldon Waetford to score the try Larkins converting. Then Larkins himself scored a try. Redruth were now 22 – 15 up but couldn’t turn pressure into points. In the final ten minutes Larkins scored another penalty which gave Redruth a breathing space but they relaxed and the take from the kick off was fumbled Old Patesians took the ball and Ben Parker scored the try converted by Scott Pollok. Old Patesians now had their tales up and attacked towards Hell Fire corner. Redruth looked to have weathered the storm and were awarded a free kick. Unfortunately this was taken too quickly and the kick to touch was from just outside the 22 metre line. Old Patesians took the ball from the lineout and drove towards the Redruth line the try going to Ross Bissett. The kick looked an easy one for Scott Pollok and a roar went up when the kick went wide of the posts, however the Referee had other ideas and gave the conversion, although only one touch judge put up his flag and he was poorly positioned. Redruth should learn a lesson from the Old Patesians, a team which never gave up and defended very well at times stopping some promising Redruth attacks. They also scored most of their points in the last ten minutes of each half.
Redruth Man of the Match selected by the sponsors ‘K & R Blewett’ was Luke Collins.
