Redruth 19 – Penryn 21

Posted under Match Reports by admin on Friday 28 December 2001 at 12:00 am

Redruth were knocked out of the Cornwall Cup at Penryn, losing 21-19 to a team three divisions below them.

Many expected Redruth to win easily but on the day Penryn showed the desire and the fire to shock their higher league oponents. Penryn are coached by former Red stalwart Terry Prior who must have been delighted to outthink his old club. The Reds scored three tries to two but poor kicking and a very poor performance were their undoing.

Redruth, still ravaged by injuries clearly have work to do ahead of their clash with Old Patesians, who beat them by over 60 points recently.

Penzance-Newlyn 38 Redruth 22

Posted under Match Reports by admin on Sunday 23 December 2001 at 12:00 am

Redruth had an excellent first half and opened the scoring with a try by Neil Douch taken after a lineout drive to the Penzance line, converted by Liam Chapple. Several Penzance attacks were frustrated by good defence, but a run by Penzance, from a line out won in their own half, led to a try and conversion to bring the scores level, Penzance followed this up with another try. The rest of the first half saw Redruth on the attack. Scott Withecombe picked up a charged down kick to go over in the corner. At the end of the half from another lineout Ian Boase scored, converted by Liam Chapple to give Redruth a half-time lead 22 – 12.

Penzance came back into the game right from the start of the second half scoring two quick converted tries. Redruth kept in the game until the final ten minutes when Penzance scored two more tries one being converted. Scott Withecombe came close but a foot in touch prevented the score. This was another good team performance and promises well for the return fixture at Redruth in March.
